  REV. CHARLES ZWEIZIG, EX-HEAD OF ALLENTOWN COUNCIL OF CHURCHES The Rev. Dr. Charles R. Zweizig, 79, pastor of Salem United Church of Christ, Allentown, 1954-76, and former president of the Allentown Council of Churches, died Tuesday in Allentown Hospital. He was the husband of Grace E. (Lough) Zweizig, and resided at 1618 Walnut St., Allentown. They observed their 51st wedding anniversary last June. Before coming to Allentown, Rev. Zweizig served Salem Evangelical and Reformed Church, Harrisburg, for seven years, and First Evangelical and Reformed Church, Greensburg, Westmoreland County, for eight years. Following graduation from Lancaster Theological Seminary in 1932 and a year of graduate study at Yale Divinity School, he was ordained in Bethany Reformed Church, York, in 1934 and served there until 1939. Rev. Zweizig was a past chairman of ecumenism for the Lehigh County Conference of Churches and past president of the Lehigh Association of the Penn Northeast Conference of the UCC. He was former chairman of the Committee on Educational Institutions, Lehigh Synod, had served on the executive committee of the Lehigh County Conference of Churches. Born in Hamburg, he was a son of the late James and Mamie (Hinterleiter) Zweizig. Rev. Zweizig was a former director of the Lehigh County Tuberculosis and Health Society Inc. and was a former board member of the Episcopal House, Allentown. A 1929 graduate of Franklin and Marshall College, he received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from F&M; in 1951. He was a Grand Prelate of the Knights of Templar of Pennsylvania 1953-54. Surviving with his widow are two sons, the Rev. Charles R. Jr. of Columbus, Ohio, and Dr. Douglas L. of Middleton, Wis.; a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Whitner of Allentown; two sisters, Irene, wife of Abner W. Becker of Harrisburg, and Mrs. Frank Rarick of Orwigsburg, and nine grandchildren. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Salem UCC. Calling hours will be 7-9 p.m. Thursday in the Stephens Funeral Home, 1335-37 Linden St., and 9:30 a.m. Friday until services in the church.
