    Notes:

See Section 1, Row 14, #7. Stone says "father". It's next to the stone for Margaret Meyer w/o Henry. The stone that reads "Henry Meyer 1795-1881 on the other side of Margaret's stone is for her step-son, Henry. It is very probable that this stone marked "father" is for Henry, the father of Henry & Jacob, and husband of Margaret. However, there is also a stone for Heinrich Meyer, 15 Oct 1764 -17 May 1820 (in German) farther along in Row 14 at #30. This stone is next to stone for his son, Wilhelm. This leaves the question of who the stone marked "father" is for.

Henry Meyer 1764-1820 is also acknowledged on a cast bronze plate affixed to a marble stone "in memoriam of the Meyer family buried in this plot.

Genealogy of the Meyer Family by Henry Meyer

Henry (son of Jacob, son of Gr. Meyer), my paternal grandfather, was married first to Mary Steese, daughter of Jacob Steese of Penns township, now Snyder County, Pa., and resided with his family near Straubsburg (Freeburg) for several years. Three of the children were born there, Henry Jacob and one — the oldest — which died in infancy. Either in 1797 or 179S the family moved into Brushvalley, Centre County, Pa., upon a tract which had been partially cleared by John Meyer who was married to grandfather's oldest sister Catharine. See page 39. Mary Steese is said to have been a very stout and strong woman and that she had charge while still single, of a grist-mill, an occupation which on account of the rude and inconvenient construction of the mills of that age, required considerable physical strength. She died in August, 1801 of a malignant fever which was- contracted while visiting with her husband her brother Frederick Steese, Snyder County (now) who was low with this fever and which he had contracted while he and his father were in Philadelphia buying goods. (Note. — Their father also took the fever in Philadelphia and died there.)

Grandfather's second wife was Margaret, daughter of John Adam Harper of Pennsvalley, who was at one time one of the associate Judges of Centre County, his term beginning in 1800. The date of the marriage I have not ascertained. Grandfather was a large man, weighing over two hundred pounds, being over six feet tall and of symmetrical build. He possessed great muscular strength and activity, and was proficient in all the athletic accomplishments of his day. Although, being of a reserved and non-aggressive disposition, he was, nevertheless, a principal in many a fierce encounter in his younger days; but it is to be hoped only in self-defense or in behalf of his friends of whom there were a legion. It is said that his brother Philip in whom the quality of meekness was not overwhelming in his earlier manhood, had, on a number of occasions to be extricated out of serious difficulties. Grandfather was well known in Centre, Snyder (now), Northumberland and other of the lower counties, in all of which he had many friends; and no doubt, not a few enemies who coveted the honor of conquering him. But he was never "knocked out." In our day a reputation of that quality is not so desirable, but in his time it was considered a proof of cowardice and consequent disgrace not to resent a real or imaginary insult b} r physical force. And it was the case, too, that a man's reputation as a pugilist was a standing challenge — a chip on the shoulder as it were — of which every other aspirant for like honors would feel in duty bound to take cognizance.

Grandfather was enrolled, as already stated, in some organization when but sixteen years old for the protection of the settlement against the Indians. He must have had a touch of the martial spirit as his connection with military organizations seems to indicate. Feb. 28, 1794 he was commissioned Major of the First Battalion 3nd Northumberland Brigade: Jan. 4, 1802, he was commissioned Lieut. Colonel of the 131. Regt. Militia, First Brigade 10th Div. composed of the counties of Mifflin, Huntingdon and Centre. I do not think he held any civil office except that of Justice of the Peace, commissioned Jan. 4, 1814, to succeed John Kryder who removed to Ohio about that date. Grandfather lived, as stated in another place, at the old home near Elk Creek, Brushvalley, until sometime after 1806 when he built a house on the main Brushvalley road, some twenty rods east of his son Reuben's present dwelling house. The barn which had been erected in 1806 stood still farther east and also along the main road. He was a millwright by trade, which occupation he followed a long time, but devoted his later years to farming. Among the grist-mills for which he performed the millwright work many be mentioned John Motz's mill, Woodward, Pa., erected in 1790; Tobias Pickle's mill now owned by J. K. Meyer, Brushvalley, erected in 1801 or 1802. I do not know that grandfather enjoyed any school privileges in his youth, yet he acquired a fair education in some way. He was an assiduous reader of both German and English books and periodicals, and wrote a beautiful hand in both languages. He was a stiff Democrat and in politics had very decided opinions. He was fond of social gatherings and as a citizen he was universally respected. He belonged to the German Reformed church and contributed liberally towards its support. Grandfather was born at Mühlbach, Lancaster (now Lebanon) county. Oct. 15, 1764, where his folks resided until about the year 1768-1770, when they re- moved to Straubsburg. See page 34. He died May 17, 1820. His death was quite sudden. Returning from a trip to Jersey Shore, Pa., he caught a severe cold which resulted in Brain fever, delirium and death. He had been an affectionate husband, a kind father and had been loved with tender affection by his family, and when his wife and children, gathered round his bier to gaze upon his face for the last time, mother says, they were overwhelmed with grief and sorrow. His second wife survived him many years; she died Feb. 27, 1871, aged 83 years 7 months 27 days: both are buried in the Lutheran and Reformed cemetery at Rebersburg. Pa.

There were ten children who reached maturity; of these, it is said, Dr. Jonathan Meyer most nearly resembled his father in physical feature.

    PASSING OF DANIEL MEYER
Old Resident of Dakota, Ill. died at Age of 87 years Sunday morning at about 2 o'clock of Sep 29. Daniel Meyer passed away at his late residence in the village of Dakota after a lingering illness due to old age and a severe paralytic stroke, at the ripe age of 87 years 7 months and 5 days. The funeral took place Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at Dakota, the Rev FA Hoerner of the United Evangelical Church officiating assisted by Rev Storer of the ME Church and Rev HW Tyler, Lutheran church, Dakota and internment followed at the family lot in the cemetery of said village by the side of his faithful bosom companion who shared with him the joys, trials, and cares incident to this life for more than 64 years and preceded her husband to the endless beyond in December, 1915.

The departed one was a son of Henry and Hannah (nee Bierly) Meyer, unto whom were born nine children in the Keystone state, all of whom, with their parents, have entered upon their eternal mission, except one. Henry Meyer of Rebersburg, Centre County, PA who is the only surviving one of his prominent family.

Early in life the deceased united with the Evangelical Association and later with the United Evangelical church and continued steadfast in the faith of this church until the end. He was a pioneer as well as an old settler of Stephenson County and was highly esteemed and respected by all that gained his acquaintance.

In 1851 he was united in wedlock with Miss Matilda Rebecca Smull in Miles township, Centre County, PA and together they shared the joys and sorrows of life for 64 years, his companion preceding him in death 1 Dec 1915. To this union were born four sons and five daughters, six of whom passed away in death and three surviving are present. Those who died were Newton Henry, who was accidentally shot while hunting when 18 years of age; Peter David, who died at the age of 14 years; Thomas Ephram, who was married to Miss Hilda Nelson of Rockford; Sarah An, who was married to George McGilligan of Janesville, IA; and two daughters died in infancy. The surviving children are: John F Meyer of Dakota; Mrs Edward Lauck, Peabody, KS, and Mrs Lincoln Goodman, Rock City, Ill. Fifteen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren also survive.

In his youthful years the deceased served an apprenticeship at cabinet making with Major John Meyer in his native locality, and for several years worked at this trade, but being desirous of bettering their condition, they elected to seek their fortune in the then regarded far west and after a long and tedious journey, they reached this locality on 31 Dec 1853, and have resided here until the Death Angel gathered them to their immortal home.

After reaching Illinois, Mr Meyer soon discovered that his trade was of no practical benefit to him, an he therefore concluded to change his vocation and followed farming at which calling he made a success. After reaching an age when farm labor became too burdensome he retired in 1895 and resided in the village of Dakota enjoying a well earned rest in his declining years.

Those present at the funeral from a distance besides the ones mentioned heretofore were Grant Burbank; Rockford; Mrs Hilda Meyer and son Evans, Pecatonica; Mr Nate Colby and wife, Davis; Mr & Mrs PO Stiver, Mrs Frank Duck, Mrs Henry Pash, Mr & Mrs Oscar Smull, and Mrs Lizzie Bowers, Freeport; Jacob Meyers and daughter, Elkhorn, Wis; Mr & Mrs Myron Smull and Mrs & Mrs Frank Smith, McConnell; and Edward Weirick, Stockton.

The family return thanks to neighbors and friends for sympathy and assistance during their bereavement.

    Notes:

Author of Genealogy of the Meyer Family. 1890.

Henry — author of this book — was born in Miles township, Centre County, Pa., Dec. 8, 1840. It is not considered good taste for one to "blow his own horn." I shall, therefore, be very brief. I was brought up on father's farm doing such work as usually falls to the lot of farmer boys; and during the Winter season attended, two or three months in a term, the common schools of the neighborhood. In the Spring of 1860 I left home to learn the millwright trade with John Todd, then residing at Potters Mills, Pa., — a trade which both father and grandfather had followed before me. Whatever spare time I had was generally devoted to reading, and the study of mathematics or other subjects that had a bearing on my trade. Sometime in August, 1862, I returned home and on the 19th of that month enlisted in the army for "three years or during the war." A number of my old comrades enlisted about the same time and we were a few days later organized at Camp Curtin, Harrisburg, Pa., as Company "A" of the 148. Regt. P. V. We went through the usual disciplinary stages of the volunteer soldier, and first got down to serious business at Chancellorsville, Va., May, 1863. There was in me a slight leaven of the military spirit, and the boom of cannon, the shriek of the shells, the roar of the musketry, the cheer of the Union Soldiers and the yell of the Rebels reverberating through the deep woods raised my enthusiasm to the highest pitch, and I felt as though I could myself vanquish a whole regiment of the enemy! That was while we lay on the picket line in an opposite direction and at a tolerably safe distance from the disturbance. But later on after a better acquaintance with the serious work before us, when those shrieking missiles began to come uncomfortably close and streams of mangled boys in blue came passing by us to the rear, then, well then, it must be confessed, my ardor abated very considerably. That was the mental and moral experience, I believe, of most of the soldiers. I was in every battle in which the regiment was engaged until my discharge, among which were those of Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Auburn Mills, Mine Run, the Wilderness and Po River or Laurel Hill, besides several skirmishes of lesser note. Never being in the hospital I took in all. I was slightly wounded at Chancellorsville, but more seriously at Po River, May 10, 1864; a minnie ball passing through my left hand near the wrist which necessitated amputation and which operation was performed May 17, 1864. by A. F. Sheldon, Surgeon in charge of Campbell Hospital, Washington, P. C. I was discharged at my own request in September following, came home and entered the Rebersburg Select School then in progress. The mutilated condition of my corporeal part rendered my trade useless to me and it became necessary to mark out a new course for the future. I taught school during the following Winter ('64 and '65), went to school again the next Summer and thus continued teaching and going to school alternately for several years. In 1866 I attended the Union Seminary, New Berlin, Pa., and in the Fall of 1868 I entered the Keystone State Normal School at Kutztown, Pa., graduating with first honors the Spring following. I assisted Supt. R. M. Magee in the Centre County Normal School for a number of years. In May, 1S75, I was elected County Superintendent of Common Schools of Center Co., for a term of three years, and was re-elected without opposition to the same office May, 1878. He was a son of John and Catherine Purman Meyer and was born at Rebersburg, Centre county, in 1842, hence was in his 84th year. In his early life he taught school but enlisted for service at the outbreak of the Civil war, serving throughout the four years’ struggle. After the war he went west and became a rough rider.
Several years later he returned to Rebersburg and married Miss Lucetta Bierly. They located in Lock Haven where he was principal of schools for thirteen years. Resigning he took a course in dentistry and practiced that profession up until a few years ago. Mr. Meyer compiled several histories of the Civil war and also wrote a number of genealogical sketches of the Meyer and Bierly families. He is survived by his wife, one son and a daughter.
Funeral services were held at his late home at 9.30 o’clock on Tuesday morning, after which the remains were taken to Rebersburg for burial.

Biographical information about Harry Elmer Bierly (pronounced "Beer-lee") was compiled from various sources.

We wish to thank Mr. Alvie L. Davidson of Lakeland, Florida whose initial detective work on our behalf resulted in us becoming connected with relatives of H.E. Bierly in Pennsylvania, as well genealogists in the Centre County, PA, area where this branch of the Bierly family originated. We are especially indebted to: David and Suzanne (Walkowiak) Rice, Doug Bierly, and Justin Kirk Houser, Genealogist/Researcher of Central PA and Beyond.

Finally, Ludy T. Benjamin, Professor of Psychology at Texas A&M University, helped search for information about H.E. Bierly's academic career in psychology.

    1. Biography of H. Elmer Bierly prior to joining the faculty of Florida State College in Tallahassee.

The following item was originally printed in COMMEMORATIVE BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD OF CENTRE, CLEARFIELD, JEFFERSON AND CLARION COUNTIES [Pennsylvania] published 1898 by J. H. Beers & Co. (p 237). (Items bolded and text reformatted for internet presentation)

"Prof. H. E. Bierly was born in the house now owned by Hon. Henry Meyer, Rebersburg, Penn., January 28, 1866. He attended the common schools of Miles township, until he was eighteen years of age, not having a chance to attend the summer schools on account of too much work on the farm. He then determined to get a better education, and in 1884 entered Union Seminary (now Central Pennsylvania College), New Berlin, Penn. This institution he attended most of the time between the years 1884-1888, during which time he nearly completed the classical course and prepared himself for Princeton University, which he entered in 1888 as a member of the class of '92.

He spent five years at Princeton University, four as an under-graduate, taking the "A.B. course" and one year as a post-graduate, studying physiological psychology under Prof. Ormond, also the philosophy of religion, under the same professor. The next year, 1893-94, he was unanimously elected "Professor of the Natural and Physical Sciences" in Belleview Collegiate Institute, at Caledonia, Mo., where he taught one year, at the expiration of which time the Institute was partially closed.

The next year he attended Harvard and Boston Universities, studying metaphysics under Prof. [Josiah] Royce and cosmology under Prof. [William] James, of Harvard University, and comparative theology and history of religious history of Christian doctrine, in the School of Theology, of Boston University. It was then that he became acquainted with Pres. G. Stanley Hall [of Clark University], John Fiske, Joseph Cooke, Professors Carpenter and Davids, of Oxford University. This year in Boston, and as a student of both of these Universities, was of the greatest value in his educational history.

The next year he was "Professor of Mathematics and Science" in Missouri Military School, Mexico, Mo., which was destroyed by fire at the expiration of that year.

During the following year he was engaged in writing a thesis on the "Origin and Development of the Conception of God", also in child-mind investigations in central Pennsylvania, in connection with Pres. G. Stanley Hall, of Clark University, Mass. and Prof. Earl Barnes, of Leland Stanford University, Cal.

At present (1898) he is professor of philosophy and science in Virginia College for Young Ladies at Roanoke, Va., one of the best of the Southern female colleges, in which he occupies a very responsible position, next to the presidents thereof.

As a student Prof. Bierly became intensely interested in philosophy, through Sir William Hamilton's lectures on metaphysics, the various works and writings of James McCosh, primarily, and through the edited works of Kant, Fichte, Schelling and Hegel, achieving a natural inclination to speculative studies. At the same time he is greatly interested in biology, through a Natural History Society, which was organized by Prof. H. N. Conser, Ph. D., at Central Pennsylvania College, and which led him to reading of nearly all the works of Darwin, Huxley, Romanes and Herbert Spencer. It was the works of James McCosh that took him to Princeton University, whose lectures on metaphysics he attended in his freshman year, this being the last course on that subject given by McCosh, with whom he as a student was very well acquainted, and upon whom he called quite often, having received special recognition, encouragement and kindness from McCosh while alive.

While a student of Princeton University he made a special study of philosophy and biology, having taken all the branches the university offers on both philosophy and biology. He took honors in the latter subject, and was offered a fellowship in osteology by the Chicago University, which he, however, did not accept, as he did not desire to give so much time in that particular line of investigation, having decided to make the study of philosophy a life vocation.

He attended and was a member of the World's Congress of Philosophy held at Chicago during the World's Fair [1893], at which time he became personally acquainted with Prof. Josiah Royce, professor of philosophy in Harvard University, who has been his private adviser and director in philosophy ever since.

Prof. Bierly is a member of the Pennsylvania German Society, and of several Psychological and Scientific Associations. He contributes a series of articles on the various conceptions of God for "The Preachers Helper". Just now (1898) he is more extensively engaged in child-mind investigations than ever, with Pres. Hall, Prof. Earl Barnes, Prof. Royce, also contributing a series of articles on child-mind study for several child-study magazines. He has also addressed and lectured before quite a number of teachers' associations and institutes in Missouri, Pennsylvania and Virginia on various, but mostly psychological subjects.

During the [William Jennings] Bryan campaign [for the Democrat presidential nomination] in 1896, on account of not being hard pressed for work, he became very much interested in politics, through his cousin, Hon. Willis R. Bierly, of North Dakota. On account of the Democratic party splitting, Mr. Bierly was requested by the foremost politicians of the county to take a hand in politics and rally the Silver forces, as he did, and has done valuable service for his Valley and the county, having been elected president of the Bryan and Sewall Club of Brush Valley, which was composed of about two hundred members.

He is a member of the M. E. Church, which he joined while a student of Princeton University. He was one of the three first members of the M.E. Church of Kreamerville, and rendered very effectual services in the building up of the Methodist Church at this place, having been appointed for this especial work, lasting several years, by the quarterly Conference (Methodist)."

    2. After 1898.

    A. The available Florida State College catalogues indicate that H.Elmer Bierly joined the faculty of Florida State College about 1899 and left the faculty about 1904.

    B. During his first or second summer at FSC, H.E. Bierly appears to have spent time at Clark University from where he returned with instrumentation to establish what the College Catalogue claims to be the first psychological laboratory in the State of Florida, circa 1901.
    C. Professor Ludy T. Benjamin, Texas A&M University, summarized the outcome of a search for details on Bierly's academic career in psychology as follows (e-mail to Mike Rashotte, 21 May, 2001; reformatted for internet presentation):

I have done a good bit of searching on Bierly through all of the standard and obscure history of psychology search tools (indexes, bibliographies, directories, etc). Here is what I know.
I can find only two publications by him, both in 1899 in the Florida School Journal.

    1. "The comparative development of the child." 1899, 2(3), p. 29.

    2. "The relation of the central nervous system to psychological theory." 1899, 2(2), p. 8.

He is not listed in Cattell's Leaders in Education (1932), nor in either volume of Murchison's Psychological Register (1929, 1932). He does not appear in Cattell's American Men of Science volumes which start publication in 1906. He does not appear in any of the APA Membership Yearbooks that I have (1914-1925). Perhaps he was a member earlier but had dropped by 1914. He is not in any of Boring's necrologies published in Psychological Bulletin.

I also looked in the literature on the founding of psychology laboratories with the following results.

FSU (or any earlier names) does not appear in the survey published by Christian Ruckmich (1912), "The history and status of psychology in the United State", American Journal of Psychology, 23, 517-531. He lists laboratories founded through 1911. It is possible that he did not send a questionnaire to FSU or that there was no one there in psychology to fill it out.

Garvey, C. R. (1929)"List of American psychology laboratories", Psychological Bulletin, 26, 652-660. Garvey sent questionnaires to all colleges with enrollments over 1,000 as listed in the College Blue Book of 1926, but also to smaller schools if he suspected a psychology laboratory existed. He lists 117 colleges in order of founding. FSU (nor its earlier names) does not appear in the listing. It is possible that a questionnaire was not sent to the school. Interestingly, University of Miami (no, it's not Miami University, which also appears in the list) does appear in the list with a founding date of 1900, which if true, would predate you. No other Florida schools appear in the list.

Benjamin, L. T., Jr. (2000), "The psychology laboratory at the turn of the 20th century', American Psychologist, 55, 318-321. I list the 40 labs for which there is good evidence of their founding by 1900. I did not list Miami because I could not verify Garvey's claim that it existed in 1900.

Note: We have been unable to locate the issues of Florida School Journal in which H.E. Bierly published in 1899.

    D. A web site describing the history of the National Association of Teachers Agencies lists H. E. Bierly as attending an organizational meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1909, as a representative of the Education Review Agency of Chattanooga, Tennessee. This information indicates that Bierly became involved in education in Tennessee some time after he left Florida State College.

    E. The Obituary Notices we have obtained about H.E. Bierly describe him as being in the realty business in Tallahassee at the time of his death in 1943. We have been unable to obtain further details on his academic and business careers.

    3. OBITUARY NOTICES FOR H. ELMER BIERLY (1943).

Commemorative biographical record of central Pennsylvania, J.H. Beers & Co., (Name: Beers & Co, 1898;).

Edwin S. Bierly, the younger, was born at Rebersburg. Penn., in 1869. A few years after his birth his parents moved on a farm two miles southwest of Rebersburg, where his early boyhood was spent. After attending the schools of "Brush Valley he in 1888 spent one winter term at Central Pennsylvania College with his brother Elmer. Here he completed the junior year of the Elementary (Normal) Department with the class of 1891. Being unable to pursue his studies until January of 1891, he then was admitted into the Junior class of the State Normal at Lock Haven. At the middle of the spring term he was compelled to leave the Normal through sickness (the measles) contracted through his chum. He then returned to Central Pennsylvania College, and completed the "Elementary (Normal) Course" with the large class of 1892. Aftter attending Central Pennsylvania College sev- eral more terms as a student of the scientific course, he, on the following year, entered Dickinson College, Carlisle, Penn., where he remained during the winter term of 1895; but had to leave college on account of sickness before the expiration of the college year. He then remained at home the greater part of the year on account of sickness and then entered Dickinson Seminary at Williamsport; but after being there six weeks he was again compelled to leave school through lack of health. Shortly afterward he was appointed general book agent for the "Minter Book Company", Harrisburg, Penn., and was quite successful in this work in the summer of 1896. On October 8, 1896, he was married by Rev. Faus, his M. E. pastor, to Miss Sadie Erhard, a daughter of Cyrus and Catherine Erhard, of Rebersburg. Mrs. E. S. Bierly was and is a dressmaker by trade, but worked almost all the time in Lock Haven. She is a very in- dustrious and ambitious young woman, and highly respected by all. She has a good common- school education, having attended the Normal Select School conducted by Supt. C. L. Gramley, at Rebersburg. The following year he and his wife spent with his parents until January, 1898, when he regained his health and returned to Dickinson Seminary as a student of the Theological Department.
In politics, he too is a "chip off the old block" namely a Democrat. He is a member of the M. E. Church, and has always taken an active part in Church work at Kreainerville, his. home Church, as one of the principal officials.

On Wednesday of last week Mr. John B. Harter, a son of Mr. Daniel Harter, residing near Rebersburg, was called to his eternal home by the merciless reaper death. Deceased sustained severe injuries in falling from a fruit tree several years ago. Under the skill of physicians he for a while improved in mind and body; but afterward, his condition growing worse, he was moved to an asylum at Danville. A few months ago he returned to his home in a fair way of entire recovery. But the sudden change in temperature in the weather brought on a relapse which eventuated in his death. Mr. Ohl, a skillful attendant from the institution at Danville, had charge of the patient after his return to Brushvalley. The future of John Harter was very promising before the accident occurred, which ended in his early death. The subject of this article attained the age of eighteen years and some months.
