While not unexpected, death came to the old home of the Carey family in its saddest office when it bore away the venerable and beloved mother. Mrs Pamelia Carey was born in Fleming (now Rowan County) at Farmers, Nov 26th 1833, and died at her home in the Gault House, Morehead, Feb 19, 1913. She was the daughter of Major J. M. and Mrs. Nancy Brain, prominent citizens of this section of the state, and from her parents she inherited a fine intellect and remarkable mental vigor. When 15 years of age she united with the Christian Church at Siloam, Ky., and remained a faithful and consistent member of that Church until her death. She was married March 3, 1859, to James Carey and to their union were born five: Judge J. M. Carey, Mrs. Nannie Powers, Morehead, Ky.;U.G. Carey, of Frankfort, and Geo. M. Carey, deceased. Some seven years ago, she laid her husband, and since that time life has been a waiting time for embarking on her voyage home, and her heart and mind have been centered on the Kingdom of her Lord.
As the genial hostess of the Gault House form many years, Mrs. Carey, with her distinguished husband, Judge James Carey, gained widespread fame and popularity for their intellectuality, Mrs. Carey was noted always for a ready wit and a quickness of repartee, which made her, on all occasions, a conversationalist of rare ability. None ever engaged in a conversation with her but that they felt the force and brilliance of her superior intellect.
Mrs. Carey was devoted to her friends, her home, her family, and her church and to all of these, she was faithful highest degree. For these, her loved ones and her cherished interests, she loved and labored and gloried in service and sacrifice. In turn, she was a recipient of the warmest friendship of her friends: the devotion of her family: the grateful recognition of her church, and the respect and admiration of all.
