    Mrs. Mildred Irene Smither, 61, 1718 Hickory Drive, died Sunday evening at 5 o'clock at Hedrick Medical Center, where she had been a patient one day.
    Mrs. Smithers was born Dec. 4, 1916 at Purdin, daughter of Charley E. Pulliam and Gertrude Buswell Pulliam. She attended school at Browning and was a graduate of the Purdin High School. On May 21, 1937 she was married to Chester William Smithers at Laclede. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Chillicothe Rebekah lodge. The couple moved to Chillicothe in 1950.
    Mrs. Smithers was a former Chillicothe city clerk and had operated the Missouri Motor Vehicle License bureau in Chillicothe. Mr. Smithers died Jan. 26, 1976.
    Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Pat (Norlene) Laffey, Chillicothe, and Mrs. Lewis (Charlene) Wisniewski, Excelsior Springs; a brother, Charles Pulliam, Purdin and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.
    Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Palmer officiating. The casket will be moved to the church at noon Tuesday. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home.

    Funeral Services Held In Purdin, August 9th
    Charlie Pulliam, youngest son of Anna Cassity Pulliam and Thomas Pulliam, was born September 21, 1879, on a farmnear Purdin, Missouri, into a family of two brothers and four sisters, and departed this life August 7, 1957, at 11:00 p.m., on the farm where he had since he was two years of age.
    He attended the Brown and Pierce schools and grew to manhood in the same community. On February 20, 1916, he was united in marriage with Nora Gertrude Buswell. To this union was born two children, Mildred Irene and Charles Edward.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters. He is survived by his wife, the daughter, Mrs. Chester Smithers of Chillicothe, Mo., the son, Charles E. Pulliam of Purdin, Mo, three grandchildren, Norlene and Charlene Smithers and Charles Duane Pulliam, and a sister, Mrs. Minnie Bivens, of Denver, Colorado, the oldest and only living member of the Thomas Pulliam family.
    Charlie numbered among his friends the entire community of Purdin and surrounding territory. He especially enjoyed fishing with some of the old timers of the community, having been unable to pursue his farm duties for several years due to a lingering illness. He was seriously ill for two weeks and two days before he passed on to his reward. He enjoyed having his friends drop in any time, and was noted for his musical ability to entertain with his banjo.
    He always said, "Our latch string is always on the outside," and his many friends and neighbors enjoyed this courtesy.
    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Friday afternoon, August 9, 1957, at the Methodist Church in Purdin, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. E.L. Huchel. Song service was by Mrs. Rose Johnson and Miss Rose Chambers, accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Helen Matkins. Honorary bearers were John Baskett, Harrison Blackburn, Athes Creason and Walter McIntyre. The bearers were Harold Buswell, John Tipton, Ray Pulliam, Jess Pulliam, Clifford Buswell and Elmer Shadow.
    Burial was made in the Purdin cemetery under the direction of the Wale Funeral Home.

    Mrs. Nora Gertrude Pulliam, 81, died Tuesday evening at the Chillicothe hospital. She had been a resident of Purdin until moving to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Chester Smithers, Chillicothe, for the last six months.
    She had been in ill health for three years and in serious condition the last month.
    Mrs. Pulliam was born Oct. 30, 1890 as Nora Gertrude Buswell. On Feb. 20, 1916 she was married to Charles Pulliam who preceded her in death in 1957.
    Survivors include a son, Charles Pulliam, Purdin, a daughter, Mrs. Smith, Chillicothe; two sisters, Mrs. Nancy Tipton, Holt Summit; and Mrs. Lillian Evans, St. James; three brothers, Thomas Buswell, Purdin; William Buswell, Sumner; and Harry Buswell, Bucklin; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
    Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Baptist church in Purdin. Burial will be in the Purdin cemetery.
    The body is now at the Wade Funeral Home in Browning.

    Thomas Pulliam, son of Thomas and Polly Pulliam, was born in Linn Co. in 1843 and died in 1920. He is buried in the Purdin Cemetery. He was one of the three Pulliam brothers who remained around Purdin and raised their children.

    Thomas, a Civil War Veteran, married Ann Cassity on Jan. 11, 1866. They settled on a farm north of Purdin and lived there all their lives. Later a son, Charley, and his family lived there and now the land belongs to grandchildren.

    Thomas and Ann Pulliam were the parents of five children: Minnie, Etta, William, Charles and Edward.

    Minnie was married to Henry Bivens and they had one daughter, Stella (Bivens) Crabtree, she lives in Denver, Colo. and has one daughter Marion.

    Etta married David Cady, he will be remembered as a rural mail carrier. They were the parents of three children: Thomas (died while a young man); Evelyn (Cady) Hill, she has two children, Ada and Garland; Stella Mae (Cady) Gooch married Kenneth Gooch, lives on a farm nw of Purdin and they are the parents of two daughters, Mary Rottman and Norma Whipple.

    William (Bill), married Ella Elston and they had three children. Lloyd (deceased), he had one daughter; Jesse (deceased) married Merle Stone (deceased) they had one daughter, Nadine (Pulliam) Elliott; Eva (Pulliam) Murrey, Skidmore.

    Charles (Charley) married Nora Boswell and they had two children; Irene (Pulliam) Smithers, Chillicothe and she had two daughters, Nora and Charlene; Charles married Velma Baskett and they have a son Duane, and two grandchildren.

    Edward (Ed) married Rhoda Cady. They had one daughter, Nellie Pulliam) Kroger, and she had a son, Gilbert. Nellie lives in North Kansas City. They also raised a foster son, Carl A. Falch, Sterling, Colo.

    Charles Jr is the only descendant of this family living near Purdin.
