    Norma Jean Brooks Berndt, 88, daughter of Laban and Bertha B. (Cobb) Brooks (deceased), passed away quietly in her sleep on Tuesday, September 21, 2021.

    She was one of 11 children, of which her sister, Judy (Brooks) Daugherty is now the only remaining sibling. Norma had four children, Jeanna Driver (Mike Mangold), Bruce (Cindy) Driver, Alan (Suzanne) Driver, and Willard Neal Flowers, Jr. (deceased). Norma was blessed with 14 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren, whom she greatly loved and enjoyed spending time with.

    Norma worked hard to raise her children and was proud of their accomplishments and public service. She was especially proud the day her three law enforcement sons were with her on the day former Sheriff Joseph McAtee made her an Honorary Deputy.

    A graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 25, 2021 at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens - 1977 South State Road 135, Greenwood.

    Services for Mrs. Bertha B. Brooks, 80, 45 Beechway Drive, the widow of Laben Brooks, will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in Conkle Speedway Funeral Home, with burial in Floral Park Cemetery. Mrs. Brooks, a lifelong Indianapolis resident, died Friday in a local nursing home. Survivors include two sons, Charles Brooks Sr. of Indianapolis and Delbert Brooks of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and five daughters, Mrs. Deloris Cowger of Noblesville, Mrs. Norma Henderson of Indianapolis, Mrs. Phyllis Beethuis of Holland, Mich., Mrs. Bertha Conley of Sheridan and Mrs. Judith Daugherty of Danville.

    Aged Man Dies Suddenly
    Reads to Daughters and Expires as He Locks Door for the Night.
    Death stalked unwelcome in to the midst of the Otis family, 2500 Schurmann avenue, last night. David Otis, age 68, was reading with this daughter in the sitting room of the home. It was an evening custom in the Otis home, as the father’s eyes were growing dim. He and his daughter talked some of what they had read, and the old man got up from the table and walked toward the front door to lock it and get ready for bed. With his hand on the lock he reeled and fell. The daughter sprang to his side, but the tongue which would have answered her questioning was stilled.
    The cause of death is given as heart trouble. He had been feeling very well for several days, and had made no complaint of any sort. A son, Harry Otis, travels with the John Robinson Circus. Yesterday the show was at Bellefontaine, O., but today the Otis family does not know where it is and can not get word to him.
