      Joyce Ann Taylor Cooper Gilkison, 91, of Madison, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, at Thornton Terrace Health Campus in Hanover.

      She was born Jan. 14, 1920, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of Wilson and Anna Larson Taylor. She was raised in Chicago, Ill., and Evansville by her mother and her paternal grandmother, Pina Taylor. She was a graduate of the Cook County, Ill., School System. She was united in marriage to Robert Cooper in 1947 and was later united in marriage in 1972 to Joseph Eugene Gilkison. She raised her family in Brownsburg and was employed by the Postal Service in Indianapolis as a mail sorter at the downtown post office and later at the post office at the Indianapolis International Airport. After retiring from the Postal Service in 1974, she and her husband, Joe, made their home in Tilton, Ill.. She became a member of the Catlin Church of Christ in Catlin, Ill. She enjoyed growing vegetables and flowers in her garden, shopping, traveling and swimming when she was able.

      She is survived by three sons, Robert Cooper of Indianapolis, Tom Cooper of Warner Robbins, Ga., and David Cooper of Indianapolis; three daughters, Linda Morrisey of Commiskey, Ida Cooper of Terre Haute and Ann Phelps of New Albany; 22 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

      She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Eugene Gilkison, whom she married in 1972, and who died in 2004; one son, Glenn Cooper, who died in 2001; one daughter, Carolyn Ingle, who died in 2004; her parents; and her grandmother who raised her, Pina Taylor, who died in 1979.

      The funeral was at the Indiana Veterans Memorial Chapel. Burial was in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
