  • Notes
    • Mr. Donald L. "Whitey" Hedges, 75, Lebanon, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2011, at Parkwood Health Care Center in Lebanon.

Mr. Hedges was born June 20, 1935, in Gadsden, son of the now deceased Francis Cleveland and Edna Pearl (Cochran) Hedges. He married Patty Joan Hoffman on June 3, 1955, in Lebanon. Mrs. Hedges survives.

He was reared and educated in Whitestown, where he was a member of the 1953 Whitestown High School graduating class. In 1955 he moved to Lebanon.

For several years, Mr. Hedges was a typesetter for The Lebanon Reporter and later for The Indianapolis Star. He retired in 1982. After his retirement, he owned and operated Hedges Cleaning & Floor Service until 1997. He also worked for Indianapolis Car Exchange for about five years.

Whitey never met a stranger. He enjoyed his friends, family and taking day trips with his wife. An avid sports fan, he followed the Chicago Cubs, IU Basketball and NASCAR racing — especially Jeff Gordon. Additional interests included doing crossword puzzles and genealogy.

He was a member of New Hope Christian Church, Whitestown; Graphic Communications Workers Local #17, Indianapolis; AFL-CIO; and was a former member of the Indiana National Guard.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Hedges of Lebanon; four children, Kathy O. Hedges, Karen K. (Mike) Netherton, Gary F. Hedges and Kimberly A. (Rick) Craig, all of Lebanon; nine grandchildren, Samantha L. Hedges of Chicago, Ill., and Chad A. Hedges, Jillian L. Hedges, Erika P. Hedges, Abigail D. Hedges-Netherton, Jessica A. Summers, Scott A. Hulse, Ryon Donald Craig and Nathon L. Craig, all of Lebanon; three brothers, James (Susie) Hedges, Ernest (Margaret) Hedges and John David (Norma) Hedges, all of Lebanon; and sister, Thelma (Max) Yaryan, of Lebanon

He was preceded in death by a brother, Tom Hedges, and a sister, Pearl Rogers.

Visitation is planned for 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N. Lebanon St., Lebanon. Funeral services with military rites will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7, at Myers Chapel of Memories, with the Rev. David Bourne officiating.

      Cremation will follow services.

Memorial contributions may be made to Gideons International.
