    • Memorial services for Mrs. Maxine Stephens, 80, a former Linneus resident, were held at 2 p.m. June 9 in the Linneus United Methodist church with the Rev. Gary Hancock, officiating. Burial in the Purdin cemetery.
      Mrs. Stephens died June 7 in Columbia.
      She was born December 27, 1903, in Purdin, daughter of Virgil and Maude Adams Lee. She was married to Orvyle H. Helms in 1926. He died in 1937.
      On December 12, 1957 she was married to Morris Stephens who survives.
      Other survivors include a son, Orvyle H. Helms, Columbia; two grandsons, Shawn and Dennis Dey, Columbia; a brother, Jimmie Lee, Purdin; a sister, Mary Swenson, Kansas City; two half-brothers, Richard Lee, Columbia and Bill Lee, Clovis, N.M.; and a half-sister, Helen Schmidt, Ottumwa, Ia. She was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Lee.
      Mrs. Stephens taught school in rural Linn county for several years. She taught in Linneus from 1937 until 1968, and later taught in Brookfield. She also service as county superintendent of schools.
      She was a member of the Linneus United Methodist Church and its Women's Society, and belonged to the Laurel Club. Visitation was held at the Wright Funeral home the evening of June 8.
