Added gender, changed inscription re: Company number, I vs. T. 1) The 23rd Kentucky Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp King in Covington, Kentucky and mustered in for a three-year enlistment on January 2, 1862, under the command of Colonel Marcellus Mundy.
The regiment was attached to District of Kentucky, Department of the Ohio, to March 1862. 23rd Independent Brigade, Army of the Ohio, to July 1862. 10th Brigade, 4th Division, Army of the Ohio, to September 1862. 10th Brigade, 4th Division, II Corps, Army of the Ohio, to November 1862. 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, Left Wing, XIV Corps, Army of the Cumberland, to January 1863. 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, XXI Corps, Army of the Cumberland, to October 1863. 2nd Brigade, 3rd Division, IV Corps, to August 1864. 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, IV Corps, to June 1865. 1st Brigade, 1st Division, IV Corps, to August 1865. Department of Texas to December 1865.
The 23rd Kentucky Infantry mustered out of service on December 27, 1865.

- William J. Holland
William J. Holland was born in Lewis county, Kentucky, November 7, 1837, and departed this life April 6th, 1923, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. B.B. DeFore, in Iola, Kansas.
In 1861 he was united in marriage to Miss Colman, of Morgan county, Kentucky. To this union was born one child, who with her mother have gone on before.
He volunteered his services to his country enlisting in 1861 and was a member of the 23rd Kentucky Infantry serving three years. He again enlisted and was made a sergeant and served until the end of the war.
In 1866 he was united in marriage to Rebecca Hunt. To this union was born nine children. His wife and two children preceded him to the Great Beyond.
He as a member of the M.E. Church since early childhood. After coming to Blue Mound, he united with the church at this place and was at the time of his death a member, but owing to ill health of late years he was unable to attend services, but always remained a firm believer in the cause of Christ.
He leaves to mourn his loss two sons, Joe Holland, Blue Mound; John Holland, Fort Scott; five daughters, Mrs. Geo. White, Iola; Mrs. B.B. DeFore, Iola; Mrs. F.E. Fairchild, Blue Mound; Mrs. C.S. Martin, Blue Mound; twenty grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held last Saturday at 2 p.m.at the Methodist church, Rev. M.O. Moyer, officiating. Interment in the Blue Mound cemetery.
