    Notes:

MHR note: Indiana Louisa went to North Madison, Indiana to visit her relatives, who sent her to school there two years. While there she heard the song "Lourena" and thereafter called herself Lourena and her family called her "Lou". According to Ida Cronkhite, she was a pretty, lively girl and became engaged to William Vawter, a relative (called "Wid"). When she returned to Kentucky, "Wid" wrote her at intervals, saying he was coming to see her, but each time failed to appear. She taught a mountain school in Kentucky and in the spring of 1879 brough home her husband, Joe Enix (who after his second marriage began spelling his name as "Enochs").

Lou and her husband went to Illinois with her parents in October 1879 and remained there until after the first child was born. But Joe became homesick and they returned to Carter County, Kentucky and their second child was born there.

According to Ida Cronkhite, Lou contracted malaria and died. But Helen Gearhart Greers said her mother thought it had been TB that had caused Lou's death..

Lou's mother, Samanatha sent a postcard about her daughter's death to relatives in Missouri.

    Shot and Killed
John M. Hedges, a brother of Walter Hedges, was shot and killed in Denver a week ago Monday, by Frank Butts. Butts, who shot Hedges was drunk. The Denver News says of Hedges: “John M. Hedges, a carpenter, who was shot and killed by Frank Butts, came to Denver from Denison, Kansas, last Aug. The delight of the wife and four children as she read the many quaint sentences of a special delivery letter received yesterday morning from the father were soon to turn to sorrowing tears as only a little later that same mother read a telegram stating the father was shot and killed.
“I cannot account for the strange tragedy,” said Mrs. Hedges. “The only thing that might cause it was the fact that Butts owned my husband money, and my husband was going to leave him.
“My husband came to this state for his health, his brother and four sisters having died of consumption. He feared the same fate.”
J.M. Hedges was 37 years of age. He leaves a wife and four young children. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. J.S. Gill, of Topeka and four brothers, Marlon, Walter, Edgar and A.V. Hedges of Kansas. His father died only six weeks ago. Walter Hedges attended the funeral of his brother at Denison, Sunday, which was held under the auspices of the Odd Fellows.

The Horton Headlight-Commercial, Horton, Kansas. Thursday, 11 April 1907.

The preliminary hearing of Frank Butts, charged with the killing of J.M. Hedges, was held in Las Animas before Justice T.D. Britton. Butts was held without bail until the term of the District Court. It is probable that the defense will try to secure a continuance. In murder cases a continuance is almost always granted over one term, and Butts’ condition is mush that he will probably never be tried for he will hardly live until November.

High Water Mark for Life Timers At Pen
James Selfridge No.6932, convicted of murder in the first degree in the district court of Mineral county, was received at the penitentiary Tuesday night to begin a life sentence in the prison. Soon after his arrival the sheriff from Bent county came with Frank Butts, who was given No.6935, who is to serve a life term for murder. Both prisoners are 30 years old.
Their arrival increased the colony of lifetimers to sixty-five, the highest number of lifers within the walls at any time during the history of the prison. The prison population is now 617, an increase of eighteen over the low water mark of two months ago.

    Notes:

    HELEN B. GEERS, CIVIC ACTIVIST
GOP volunteer and poll worker encouraged all to vote

    By Jim Calhoun
    The Cincinnati Enquirer

Helen B. Geers believed everyone has a civic duty to vote.

She took that duty seriously, and she wasn't very patient with those who didn't.

She spent more than two decades working at polling precincts, registering people to vote and encouraging the elderly to cast absentee ballots, in Hamilton and Clermont counties.

The Amelia resident died of complications from heart disease Tuesday in Clermont Mercy Hospital. She was 88.

"She worked right up until she was 85. She was still registering voters and (being) aggravated when they didn't vote." said her daughter, Mary A. Haverkamp.

Mrs. Geers simply could not fathom how anyone could be disinterested in civic affairs.

"She thought they should be participating in their government," said Haverkamp, who lives in Clermont County's Monroe Township.

Mrs. Geers was a GOP Central Committee Woman, which means she was in charge on election day at her home precincts in Batavia and Amelia.

"She was very active in our party," said John Born, former Republican chairman of Clermont County. "She was very supportive of Republican principles and local leadership."

Mrs. Geers, a native of Morehead, Kentucky, belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star chapter in Amelia and the Clermont County Republican Club. She also volunteered at some events for the county Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board.

Mrs. Geers is also survived by a son, Richard Boothe of Newport, Kentucky; six grandchildren and seven great-children.

Her husband, former Cincinnati police Officer Alphonse Geers, whom she married in 1939, died in 1960.

Funeral service is 9:30 a.m. Saturday in E. C. Nurre Funeral Home, 177 W. Main St., Amelia. Visitation is Friday from 5 to 8 p.m., with Eastern Star service at 7:30 p.m.. Burial will be in Mount Moriah Cemetery in Union Township.

Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society, 25 N. Second St., Batavia, 45103.

    Notes:

    Harry W. Lawton
Dana Point, Calif. Harry W. Lawton, journalist and author whose account of the 1909 manhunt for an American Indian fugitive inspired the movie “Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here,” died Nov. 20. He was 77.
Lawton died in a Dana Point assisted-care facility following a long illness, according to family members.
Lawton’s 1960 book “Willie Boy: A Desert Manhunt” chronicled the hunt for a 28-year-old Paiute-Chemehuevi Indian who had shot and killed his girlfriend’s father because he had forbidden the distant cousins from marrying.
Willie Boy and the 16-year-old girl, Carlota Boniface, eluded a posse for 12 days, traversing 600 miles of Southern California desert in 100-degree heat. Carlota ultimately was shot and killed and Willie Boy killed himself.
Lawton’s work, which included interviews with surviving posse members, won the James D. Phelan Award in Literature for best nonfiction and the Southwest Literature award for a historical work.
The book was turned into a 1969 movie that starred Robert Redford as the deputy sheriff in charge of the posse, Robert Blake as Willie Boy and Katharine Ross as Carlota. Lawton served as a consultant on the film.
Lawton operated a bookstore in Berkeley before working as a journalist for the San Clemente Sun and the Riverside Press-Enterprise. From 1965 to 1991 he was a writer, editor, administrative analyst and management services officer for the University of California, Riverside. He had strong ties to the local American Indian community.

Ed J. Hauser, of Fontana Is Killed In Explosion
Ed J. Hauser, 35 years old, of Fontana, died Sunday at the Ramona hospital, from the effects of burns sustained in a gas explosion that occurred Saturday at his new hatchery in Fontana.
Mr. Hauser had built one of the most modern poultry plants in the state, and the explosion that caused his death occurred when he entered this plant Saturday evening and struck a match which ignited escaping gas. He was accompanied at the time by his 8-year old daughter, who escaped any serious injury. The cause of the escaping gas was not ascertained.
Mr. Hauser was one of the best known poultrymen in the state and considered an authority on the subject, which had been made his life study from early youth. Born in Milwaukee, in 1892, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1915 with honors in a course of poultry husbandry. He graduated the following year from Cornell University, and then came to California. He conducted the first poultry extension courses from the University of California and was associated in the development of the idea of demonstration farms.
In 1919 he became associated with the Fontana Farms, where he was the originator of the “Fontana” strain of white leghorns. His work with this company is credited with being responsible for the development of the poultry industry, which has reached large portions, at Fontana.
He recently resigned from the Fontana Farms Co., to enter business for himself.

Stewart Alois Hedges, (80), died peacefully at home on August 27, 2023 after a year-long illness.

Stewart was born March 23, 1943 in Glendale, CA to loving parents, Walter Stewart and Lila Mae (Hubbard) Hedges. The family of three quickly moved to beautiful Ashland, OR where he was raised and graduated from Ashland High School in 1961. Stew then married Karen (Brown) and had four children, while he worked alongside his father in the family window washing business. Though he did have many other adventures, the most exciting was when he decided to finish his college degree in Phoenix, AZ. In 1981 he earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Southwest Baptist Bible College and became an Ordained Minister.

Stewart wore many hats during his working years including manager of movie theaters and restaurants, and even a schoolteacher then principal at New River Christian Academy in Arizona. This is where he met and married Christine (Bowling), together having two wonderful children. Stew returned to Oregon with his new family and became a division manager for a school bus transportation company for over 25 years. When he finally retired, he continued as a dedicated county school bus driver in Klamath Falls, OR just to keep busy.

Stewart loved a lot of things, driving had to be one of his favorites. If you spent much time with him, you must have taken one of his famous ‘Rides’. He always found a reason to be driving somewhere… the long way, too! He cherished spending time outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping, and sitting around a campfire talking with family and friends. He loved studying the Bible, family history, genealogy, listening to music, and watching old westerns. He was an avid reader, with his favorite book being the Bible, which he read every morning.

Stewart is survived by his wife Christine (Bowling) Hedges, children Teresa (Hedges) Lowe (husband David) of Medford, OR, Jeffrey S. Hedges of Klamath Falls, OR, Rebecca M. Hedges of Klamath Falls, OR. His grandsons Travis Lowe (wife Cassidy) of Medford, OR, Hayden Lowe of Medford, OR, Paul David Stewart Hedges of Bonanza, OR, and Amber and David Hedges of Phoenix, AZ. Also leaving behind many loving cousins, family, friends, and best friend Terry Helfrich.

Proceeded in death by his children Lisa L. Hedges, Jason S. Hedges, Mark D. Hedges, and his grandson Bradford D. Lowe.

The Family will be having a memorial service at 11am on October 14th, 2023, at Scenic Hill Memorial Park, Ashland, OR.
