    Aged Resident In Allerton Is Taken By Death
    Mrs. Philora Hedges, 80, died at 5:20 o’clock Tuesday morning (January 31, 1928) at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lottie Clester.
    Infirmities and heart disease caused her demise. She had been ill for several weeks. The exact hour for the funeral has not been set, but it will be held sometime Thursday at the Presbyterian church with Rev. J. M. Bean, officiating. Burial will be in the Fairfield cemetery. Mrs. Hedges was born at Greenup, Ky., Sept. 28, 1847. She came to Allerton 45 years ago. Dec. 26, 1866 she was married to James A. Hedges who died six years ago.
    She leaves the following children: Mrs. George Clifton, of Moneta, Ia.; Mrs. Edward Ellis, of Macy, Ind.; Mrs. Thomas Smith, of Homer, Ill.; Mrs. Lottie Clester, of Allerton, and George Hedges, of Gilmore City, Ia. She is also survived by 21 grand-children and several great grand-children.

    Mrs. Serona DEE ELLIS, 73, of a mile and a half southeast of Macy, died Saturday afternoon at the home of a son, Clarence ELLIS, near Macy, after an illness of seven weeks. She had resided in the Macy community since 1908.
    A native of Kentucky, she was born in Boone county, Ky., on Oct. 13, 1869. She was married to Mr. Ellis in 1885.
    Surviving are the son, Clarence; one brother, George [DEE], of Danville, Ill.; a sister, Mrs. Ada SMITH, Danville, Ill., and two grandchildren. Mrs. Ellis had been a resident of Macy since 1908, coming there from Danville, Ill.
    The body was returned to the son's home from the Kline funeral home at Denver Sunday afternoon. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Macy Christian church with burial in Plainview cemetery.

    Mrs. Ada Smith
    Homer (CNS) – Mrs. Ada Hedges Smith, 90, died at 8:30 p.m. (Nov. 14, 1965) at the Smoot Nursing Home in Tilton where she had been a patient five years.
    She formerly lived on Homer rural route and in Danville.
    She was born at Farmerburg, Ky., Aug. 15, 1875, the daughter of James and Philora Hitchcock Hedges. She was married to Tom Smith on Aug. 7, 1892 at Homer. He died in 1933.
    Surviving are two sons, Lester of Metcalf and Leonard of Homer rural route; a daughter, Mrs. Grace Brazelton of Hume; 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
    She was also preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
    She was a member of the Church of Christ of Danville and the Perseverence Band.
    The body is at the Jeanes-Kirby Funeral Home in Homer where funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Ernest Eckhoff officiating. Burial will be in Davis Cemetery at Fairmount. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

    Russell disappeared. text from letter August 1900. He never was heard of again by his family. In Danville, Illinois, once a man asked Clarence Clester who he was, and on learning his mother was a Hedges, he asked about the family. This conversation took place at a garage. They never learned who the man was. He [Russell] had gone to Gifford, Illinois to visit a cousin. While there in September 1900 he became despondent, sold his horse and buggy to Joe Lowder, getting part cash and a note which he sent to his mother. The note never was paid. He wrote saying he was going west and would write as soon as he got settled. His family advertised for him and broadcast appeals after radio came into use.


    LKH note:
    No records for Russell found after the 1900 census when he is in his parents' household in Illinois.

    However, it is possible that there might be a record of him in 1904 in Nebraska.

    There is a Russell Hedges listed on the US Army Register of Enlistments whose age and place of birth matches. It also appears that he had two prior enlistment periods and the remarks seem to indicate that he was discharged two years later in 1906.

    Funeral services for Mrs. Ella Beck of Spencer will be held today, Tuesday, September 14, at 2:30 p.m. from the Warner Funeral Home.. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Spencer
    Mrs. Beck died Saturday, September 11, 1982 at the Spencer Municipal Hospital. She was 90.

    Ella Mae Clifton was born March 22, 1892 near Homer, Illinois, the fourth child of George Andrew and Evaline (Hedges) Clifton. In 1895 the Clifton family moved to Clay County and settled near Everly, later moving to Moneta where they had purchased a farm. Ell graduated from Everly High School and began teaching at age 17. She was married to Ernest Anderson in 1918. A school teacher for many years, Ella also worked capably at many jobs, among them were an oil station attendant, tombstone salesman, life insurance salesman and after the death of her second husband, Berl Hammer, she started a dress shop in Spencer. She later moved to Emmetsburg, building a larger bridal and dress selection in her shop. Ella sold the business in 1957 to return to college and renew her teaching certificate. She taught in Hartley for several years and then taught the special education classes in Spencer until she was married to Fred Beck on August 10, 1966. Ella taught school for a total of 39 years.

    Mrs. Beck is survived by her husband, Fred a resident of Long House in Spencer; a son Jack LeRoy Anderson of Mason City; six grandsons; two great grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Lloyd (Lottie) LaDow of Emmetsburg.

    She was born Dec. 15, 1918, the daughter of George and Bertha (Julius) Hedges in Lynn Gove, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Earl "Pat" Larrance on Nov. 11, 1944, in Danville. He preceded Sophia in death in February 1994.

    Survivors include: her three nieces, Gwen (Jerry) Price of Gravious Mills, Mo., Gayle (Gene) Spesard of Indianola, and Nita (Deane) Winkler of Indianola; and her nephew, Dale (Mona) McCallister of Chandler, Ariz. She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother.

    Sophia was a member of the Ridge Farm United Methodist Church where she was the organist and pianist for many years. She belonged to the Ridge Farm Women's Club and Home Bureau. She enjoyed gardening and sewing.

    A celebration of Sophia's life will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 10, 2006, at Sunset's Houghton-Leasure Funeral Home. Pastor Jennie Chin will officiate. Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. Monday before the service. She will be laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetery in Indianola.     In 1957 the family moved to Redondo Beach, California and lived there for 23 years. In 1980, Don and Bea moved to Arnolds Park, Iowa, to enjoy their retirement years at their lake home.

    Don was a member of the V.F.W and the Eagles Lodge. He had a beautiful singing voice, a wonderful sense of humor, and a zest for life. He loved sports, fishing, hunting, golfing, boating, playing cards, and spending time with friends and family. He was truly loved by all who knew him, and is sincerely missed by all.

    He was born September 3, 1932 in Royal, Iowa to James Millard and Mattie Rose Clifton Morgan.

    He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War.

    Lowell married Barbara Wayment February 11, 1955 in Ogden, Utah.

    Lowell retired after 20 years of service with the Air Force and 20 years as a United States Postal worker.
    He lived in Germany, Philippines, New York, Florida and Colorado. He attended Royal High School. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Sunset 3rd Ward. Among his many callings he served as High Priest.

    Lowell loved fishing, movies and was an avid Jazz fan.
    He is survived by his wife Barbara of Sunset; children: Randy Morgan of Sunset; Julie (John) Burnitt of Clinton; Danny Morgan of Sunset; Clifford Morgan of Sunset; Cynthia (Brad) Garr of Ogden; four grandchildren, Lori, Aaron, Jenny, Wendy, eight great-grandchildren, Richard, Gabrielle, Jesse, Bracken, Sadie, Meagan, Kaylee, Haylee, and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are siblings, Jamie Morgan, Florida; and Doris (Rick) Tiefel of California.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, in-law Grandma Doris and Ted, two sisters Noreen and Inez and brother, Don and grandson Charlie.

    Special thanks to IHC Hospice, Vicky and Jon, and Doctors Sergio Collado and Chris Merkley for their exceptional loving care.

    Graveside services will be held Saturday, April 30, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Myers Evergreen Memorial Park, 100 Monroe Blvd., Ogden, where Military Honors will be accorded.     Betty J. Nygaard was born Aug. 26, 1926, to Ansgar and Viola Jensen in Windom. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Spencer, Iowa, where she attended school, graduating from high school in 1944. She was a graduate of Dana College, Blair, Neb., in 1951 with additional credits from Iowa State Teachers Colleges, Ames, Iowa.

    She taught school for several years in Iowa and served as a Lay Missionary for one year with Home Missions of the National Lutheran Council in California and Washington.

    She married Gerhard J. Nygaard of Blair, Neb., on May 30, 1952. Following his graduation from Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Blair, they served a Home Mission Congregation in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. The second parish was two congregations in the Cushing-Luck, Wis., area. In 1964, they moved to Borman, N.D., where her husband became the Administrator -Chaplin of Sunset Nursing Home, then under construction. After five years there, they received a call from the Northfield Retirement Center, also under construction.

    Betty was certified as a Senior Laubach Tutor in 1975, and from 1978 and on, was a trained advocate with the Northfield Victim Support Program. She taught Sunday School for 40 years and was the Director of Parish Education at St. Peter's Lutheran Church from 1971 to 1980. She also conducted Vacation Church School Workshops for an Augsburg Publishing House in the Southeastern Minnesota District of the former American Lutheran Church.

    In 1989, the Northfield Sertoma Men and Women's Club presented to Betty the Service to Mankind Award for her community service work and the victim support program. Her entry went on to the District Level where she also received the top award.

    During their years in Northfield, she and her husband enjoyed trips to the Soviet Union, Ireland, the heart of Europe, and Hawaii.

    She is survived by her husband; four daughters, Linda of Northfield, Debra of Minneapolis, Sandra (Warren) Skura of Oakdale, and Lisa of Northfield; one brother, Dr. Bruce (Doris) Jensen of Bend, Ore.; two grandchildren; and two nieces and their families.

    She was preceded in death by her parents and twin daughters.

    Memorials may go to St. Peter's Mission Endowment Fund or to the Northfield Retirement Center Foundation.

    SOUTH BEND - Robert Francis Ellis, 85, of South Bend, went home to be with his Lord and Savior at 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend. Mr. Ellis was born on July 31, 1923, in Rochester, IN, to the late Clarence and Mary B. (Heeter) Ellis, and had lived on a farm in Macy, IN. Mr. Ellis was a graduate of Macy High School in 1941 and then enrolled at the International Business College, Ft. Wayne. After graduation in 1943 he was employed at General Electric for three years and then moved to South Bend in 1946 where he worked at The Ridge Company. In 1952 he was employed by The Torrington Company as a general accountant. He retired from there in 1985 after 32 years of service. He then worked two years at The Ridge Company and 13 years as a part- time employee in the tax department of Coopers and Lybrand.

    Mr. Ellis was married in South Bend to Mary Alice McFarland on June 17, 1951. He is survived by his wife, Mary Alice; three children, Ronald P. Ellis of Lantana, TX, Diane L. (Arnie) Elmerick of Columbus, IN, and Richard J. Ellis of Mishawaka; one granddaughter, Robin M. Elmerick; two step-grandchildren, Christian (Michelle) Elmerick and Courtney (Keenan) Lane; and four step-great- grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Cassidy, Matthew and Zachary Elmerick. Also surviving are one sister, Martha (Donald) Hardacre of Thousand Palms, CA; two nieces, Lane and Pam Hardacre; and one nephew, Steven Hardacre.

    Mr. Ellis was a 50-year member of the Grace United Methodist Church, past president of the South Bend Lions Club, a Melvin Jones Fellow of Lions International, past president of Toastmasters Club #694, a member emeritus of the Institute of Management Accountants, a member of Presbyterian Players, a volunteer at the Budget Corner, as well as volunteering his time for other organizations. He was also active with the choir and bell choir at St. Paul's Retirement Community. Mr. Ellis loved his family, traveling, yard work, crossword puzzles and theatre.

    Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 7, in Grace United Methodist Church. Rev. David Schrader will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, March 6th, in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S.     HUME – Waneta Lea Roller, 87, of Hume died at 11:30 a.m. Sunday (March 11, 2018) at The Oaks Manor, Oakland.

    She was born on March 30, 1930, in Allerton, the daughter of James Lester and Beulah Carner Smith and sister of Betty Niksich and Eugene Smith, all of whom preceded her in death.

    Waneta and her husband, Philip A. Roller, were married in Paris on July 3, 1949. Philip preceded her in death on Oct. 13, 2017. Waneta and Philip were constant companions for their entire marriage.

    Waneta lived in Hume her entire adult life and was an active member of Hume Christian Church. She served the village of Hume as water clerk for many years. Waneta also was a homemaker and socially active member of the community. She particularly enjoyed puzzles and making her family's favorite dishes.

    Waneta raised two children with Philip, Cindy (Ray) Smith of Hume and Randy (Sherri) Roller of Seymour, Ind. She delighted in spending time with her children and their spouses. In later life, they were a great source of happiness for her.

    Waneta is also survived by three loving grandchildren, Anita Pierce (Willem) Bakker of Luxembourg City, Luxembourg, Dustin (Kallie) Roller of Crothersville, Ind., and Danielle (Andrew) Kirk of Columbus, Ind.; and one great-grandchild, Allen Paul Roller of Crothersville. Waneta took great joy in spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchild.

    There will be a private family service at Joines Funeral Home, 401 W. Gillogly St., Newman, at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 17, 2018. Public graveside services and interment will follow at 11 a.m. Saturday at Young America Cemetery, Hume. Waneta's nephew, Craig Roller, will officiate.

    Waneta's children and their spouses wish to thank the kind and compassionate staff at The Oaks Manor for their care and support in her last months. They also appreciate the comfort provided by Lincolnland Hospice.

    Lois Maxine Dodd, 95, of Danville passed away early Monday morning Mary 27, 2017 at The Waters of Covington.

    Lois was born January 4, 1922, in Homer, IL, the daughter of Leonard and Daisy (Easton) Smith. She married Kenneth Dodd on April 14, 1946. He preceded her in death in 2008.

    Surviving Lois is her son, Gary (Mary Ann) Dodd and two daughters, Brenda Shanks and Julie (Steve) Myers and seven grandchildren Jason Shanks, Tara (Alan) Hackerd, Tony (Christy) Dodd, David Dodd, Joseph Dodd, Maria (Dan) Thornton, and Jordyn Shanks and seven great grandchildren.

    Lois was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth and one sister Irene Hanks.

    Lois graduated from St. Elizabeth School of Nursing in 1942. After graduation, Lois enlisted in the United States Army. She did her basic training in Wisconsin. After completion, she served in the US Army 101st Nurses Corp. She served in England in charge of over 100 amputees.

    She also served in France and Germany. After returning to the states, she married Kenneth Dodd and they both attended Varner Beauty School in Paris, IL. They had their own Beauty Shop in Danville, IL. After a period of time, they decided to start a family therefore closing the shop. She continued her nursing career as a school nurse for Fairchild School in Danville and in 1974 went to the Veterans Administration Hospital in Danville, IL retiring in 1978.

    Lois was a member of Second Church of Christ, Danville, IL. She enjoyed traveling, camping and spending time with her family.

    A celebration of Lois’s life will be held at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 3490 N. Vermillion, Danville, IL, on Thursday, March 30th at 3pm with visitation one hour prior to the service. Drew Mentzer will officiate with entombment at a later date at Sunset Memorial Park.

    Graveside services for Eldon LeRoy “Tiny” Fieseler, 57, of Central Valley will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lawncrest Memorial Park in Redding with military honors by the 20th District Drill Team. Members of the Redding Moose Lodge No.1006 will officiate.
    Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at Lawncrest Chapel.
    Mr. Fieseler died of natural causes Thursday at his home. He was born Aug. 12, 1925, in Woodward, Iowa. He moved to Shasta County in 1962.
    A cement mason, Mr. Fieseler was president of the Plasterers and Cement Masons Local 805 and a delegate to the Northern District Council.
    He was active in several citizens band radio clubs in the north state as well as in school organizations and the Cub Scouts. He was a member of the Redding Moose Lodge, recently serving as governor, and of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9546 of Hayfork.
    He is survived by wife Mary, sons Kenneth, Allen and Ramon of Central Valley and son Eddie Pedrerra of Inglewood, daughter Fay Jeffries of Willow Grove, Pa.; mother Ruth R. Wonders of Hayfork; sister Vivian Hooper of Hayfork; and three grandchildren.
    Memorial contributions may be made to the building fund at the Moose Lodge.

    Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lawncrest Chapel for Jerald D. Fieseler of Redding, who died Saturday at Memorial Hospital after a long illness. He was 49.

    A native of Woodward, Iowa, Fieseler was born Aug. 16, 1926. He was a veteran of World War II and had worked in construction. He had been a resident of Shasta County for 15 years.
    He leaves a son, Gary of Grants Pass, Ore.; a daughter, Connie Wheeler of Anderson; two brothers, Eldon of Redding and Donald of St. George, Utah; a sister, Vivian Hooper of Hayfork; his mother, Ruth Wonders of Mountain Gate, and five grandchildren.
    Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the chapel.

    His occupation was laying carpet. He lived most of his life in Norwalk, Calif. before moving to southern Utah about 10 years ago.
    Survivors include his wife of St. George; children Teresa Spendlove of St. George; Debra Stirling of Washington, Michael Donald Fieseler and Daniel Fieseler of St. George; stepchildren, Ron Jay Stout, Albert E. Stout, Carla Bringhurst and Charles Gardner all of St. George; seven grandchildren and one step-grandchild; his mother, Ruth Wonders of hayfork, Calif.; a brother, Eldon L. Fieseler of Redding, Calif.; and a sister, Vivian B. Hooper of Hayfork, Calif.
    Services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in the St. George 10th LDS Ward Chapel on 500 N. Bluff Street. Burial will be in the St. George City Cemetery under the direction of Spilsbury and Graff Mortuary.
