    MHR note: Lem enlisted 7 May 1917 in the 7th Cavalry US Army and returned home 26 May 1919. Lem and Grace first built a tent, 16x16 army style and lived in it until their house was finished in October. They lived some time on an island in the Mississippi River, north of LaGrange, Missouri, in the jurisdiction of Illinois.

    They lived in Lewis, Kansas in 1926 and in western Kansas about five years, returning to LaGrange, Missouri in April 1933, and lived agin in the house they built in 1920.

    Mary "Mildred" Blankenship, 91, of Keokuk, passed away at 3:55 AM Sunday, September 24, 2017, at Unity Point Health of Keokuk.

    Mildred was born October 9, 1925, in Bloomfield, Iowa, the daughter of Lem and Grace V. Hedges Tallman. After graduation she attended Culver-Stockton College where she received her teaching certificate. Mildred was united in marriage to Vencil C. Blankenship on April 18, 1944. Shortly after their marriage she and Vencil moved to Keokuk where they raised their family on the farm at Peters Dairy. In addition to church Mildred and Vencil enjoyed going to the races, playing cards with friends and were first class mushroom hunters. After over 49 years of happy marriage Vencil passed away June 28, 1993. Mildred had worked many years at Woolworths before retiring from there. She enjoyed sewing, reading and made many crafts. Mildred was a member of the First Christian Church for over 65 years.

    Mildred is survived by two sons, Lem (Bobbie) Blankenship, Gordon (Linda) Blankenship, both of Keokuk and one daughter, Virginia Mae Gruell of Plymouth, IN., seven grandchildren; Troy Blankenship of Quincy, IL., Christopher Loring of Keokuk, IA., Jody Foreman of North Liberty, IA., Gina Kester of Greenville, IL., Gordon Blankenship, Jr. of Tennessee, IL., Tony Loring of Plymouth, IN., and Larry Loring Jr., of Cataula, GA., and several great and great-great grandchildren.

    In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, a son-in-law Gene Gruell, a granddaughter Tari Hanson and two great grandsons.

    Memorial service will be held at First Christian Church with Gordon Blankenship Jr., and Dave Turner officiating on October 21, 2017 at 11:00 AM with a dinner following. A private burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park at a later date.

    Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church.

    Herbert Austin Tallman, 85, of East Brady, PA, passed away Monday, January 21, 2018, at VNA Hospice of Butler.

    He was born July 26, 1933 in La Grange, MO, the son of Lem and Grace E. (Hedges) Tallman.

    Bert graduated from Stanton County High School in Kansas in 1952 and honorably served in the US Army during the Korean War. He later moved to the San Jose, CA area, calling the area home for 43 years, and then lived in Turlock, CA for 8 years. He worked for General Electric as a program manager in the nuclear division for 37 years, retiring in 1993.

    After his retirement, Bert enjoyed traveling with his wife, Joann, and together they visited many national parks. In 2015, he moved to East Brady and was a member of the Zion Church of Petroleum Valley. Bert was a talented woodworker and was known for his ability to fix anything.

    His memory will be cherished by his sons, Dan Austin Tallman, of Pioneer, CA, and David A. Tallman and wife, Dawn, of Marshalltown, IA; daughter, Trish Olkowski and husband, Joe, of East Brady; grandchildren, Joshua, Jonathan, Michael, Jess, Jessica, Rachel, Ally, and Mike; and great-grandchildren, Ezra and two on the way.

    Bert was preceded in death by his parents; loving wife of 69 years, Joann (Silva) Tallman, whom he married July 4, 1953 and who died January 27, 2016; brothers, Richard and Gordon Tallman; and sister, Mary Mildred Blankenship.

    A memorial service will be held at 7 PM on Friday, January 25, 2019, at the Zion Church of Petroleum Valley, 1392 Kittanning Pike, Karns City, PA 16041, with his son-in-law, Pastor Joe Olkowski, officiating.

    A private family burial will be in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville, PA.
