    John Evans, Active In State Politics, Dies At Age Of 90
    Frankfort, Ky., Aug. 21, (AP) – John G. Evans, 90, long active in Democratic state politics, died yesterday of a heart attack while en route from Eminence to a Shelbyville hospital.
    A native of Carter county, he came to Frankfort in 1904, leaving the mercantile trade at Morehead to accept several appointive posts in Democratic administrations here. He was a strong supporter of the late U.S. senator and governor, J.C.W. Beckham.
    He had been in failing health for the past two years and had left Frankfort to live quietly in Eminence.
    Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Harry L. Jeffers and Mrs. W.J. Hulette, both of Frankfort, and Mrs. Lester O. Marshall, Cincinnati; two sons, John Clifford Evans, a post office employe here, and Herndon J. Evans, editor of the Pineville Sun and publicity chairman for Gov. Earle Clements' successful campaign for Democratic nomination to the U.S. senate; four brothers, Emery Evans, Olive Hill; Gran Evans, Clemson, S.C.; Sherman Evans, Winter Haven, Fla., and Nelson Evans, Tollesboro; and a sister, Mrs. Connie Logan, Ashland.
    Funeral services will be held here at 2 p.m. central daylight time, tomorrow at the Rogers Funeral home with burial in the Frankfort cemetery.

    Frankfort – Mrs. Blanche Evans Jeffers, 79, the wife of Harry Jeffers, of 309 West Fourth Street, died at 4:30 a.m. today at Capital Manor Nursing Home in Frankfort after a long illness.
    She was a native of Rowan County and a member of the First Christian Church, the Frankfort Garden, Daughters of the American Revolution, King’s Daughters Circle and a former member of the Frankfort Library Board.
    Besides her husband, she is survived by her daughter Mrs. Josephine Bupuy, Lebanon, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. W.J. Hulette, Frankfort, and Mrs. L.O. Marshall, Norwood, Ohio; two brothers, Cleff Evans, Frankfort and Herdon J. Evans, Lexington; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
    Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, at Rogers Chapel, by the Rev. John Chenault. Burial will be in Frankfort Cemetery. The body is at the funeral home.

    "Following an illness of about two weeks, since the birth of a child, Mrs. Joseph R. Hales, 23, died yesterday at the family home, Logan and Campbell Streets. She suffered a relapse about a week ago and grew worse rapidly. She was the wife of Joseph R. Hales, who is employed by the firm of R. Rogers & Son. Mrs. Hales was a highly esteemed woman, and a leading member of the First Christian Church. She was married about four years ago. Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, one aged three years and the other born two weeks ago; three sisters, Mrs. Florence Hulett, Mrs. Blanche Jeffers and Mrs. Mamie Marshall, and three brothers, Willie B., Herndon and J.     Kentucky journalist, Herndon Evans, dies
    Lexington, Ky. (AP) – Herndon J. Evans, a longtime weekly newspaperman in Kentucky and former editor of the Lexington Herald, died Thursday at the age of 80.
    Evans died while fishing on a beach behind his apartment at Clearwater Beach, Fla.
    Evans was a native of Franklin County and a graduate of the University of Kentucky. He was editor of the Herald from 1956 to 1967 and before that was editor and owner of the weekly Pineville Sun.
    He worked briefly with the Associated Press and the Louisville Courier Journal in1922 before purchasing the newspaper in Bell County.
    Evans had been a member of the University of Kentucky Board of Trustees and had served as president of the Kentucky Press Association.
    The was publicity chairman for the late Sen. Alben W. Barkley in 1954 and for former Sen. Early Clements in 1950.
    He was also publicity chairman in the unsuccessful bid of Bert Combs for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in 1950. Combs was elected governor and it was reported that Evans was in line for a cabinet post, but he declined to accept it.
    Evans headed the Mountain Laurel Festival Association and was a member of the state Park Board, leading a drive that led to construction of four lakes in Bell County.
    Funeral arrangements were incomplete Thursday. The body was to be taken to a Louisville funeral home.
    Evans is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Downing Evans; a daughter, Mrs. Baylor Landrum, Louisville; a brother, Cleff Evans, Frankfort; a sister, Mrs. John Lester, Cincinnati; and three grandchildren.
