CONESVILLE MAYOR HELD FOR MURDER Accused of Shooting Dr. A. R. McKeown MUSCATINE, George Brown, 78, Conesville mayor, was charged with first degree murder Tuesday afternoon in the death of Dr. A. R. McKeown, 63, farm operator near Conesville. Deputy Sheriff L. G. Pace said McKeown told him in a statement before the retired physician was taken to a hospital that Brown had shot him. The information charging the mayor with murder was signed by Deputy Sheriff L. G. Pace. Brought before Justice of the Peace L. A. Crull, Brown waived preliminary hearing and was committed to the county jail without bond. A short time earlier Sheriff Fred B. Nesper said he and an agent of the Iowa bureau of in investigation were questioning Brown in connection with the death of the one-time Seattle Wash., physician whose brother served a term in the penitentiary for killing their mother.

Wounds Prove Fatal. Dr. McKeown died Tuesday morning in an Iowa City hospital of gunshot wounds in the back. The sheriff said the mayor admitted seeing the farm operator Monday, but denied any part in the incident. Following the death, State Agent Dwight Bender came here to assist in the investigation which the sheriff said was intensified immediately. Dr. McKeown was shot in the back Monday, apparently by a shotgun, as he was rounding up cattle on his farm, about 18 miles west of Muscatine. The horse he was riding brought him to his home. Mrs. Stuart Conklin, a neighbor, noticed the horse and rider and called other neighbors who notified the sheriff's office. The doctor was rushed to the hospital by ambulance, after giving Deputy Sheriff Pace a statement. Sheriff Nesper said Brown owns a farm near the McKeown place.

Leaves Practice For Farm. Dr. McKeown attended the University of Iowa medical college three years and finished his studies in Denver in 1910, members of the family said. He served as a major in the medical corps in World War I. Surviving are a daughter, Miss Priscilla of Mt Pleasant; his father, M. P. McKeown of Conesville, and a brother, Albert, of Muscatine County. A son, Lovelll, was killed in World War II. His wife and mother are dead. The- doctor's mother, Mrs. Rhoda Emma McKeown, then 82, was killed at Seattle in March, 1932, while on a visit at the home of another son, Dr. Albert G. McKeown, then 45, and a Seattle dentist. Her body was found in the basement of Albert's home. The dentist was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to 12 to 25 years in prison. On the completion of his term he returned to Muscatine County, where his physician-brother already was residing. Since then both professional men have operated farms near each other in the Conesville vicinity. Council Bluffs (Iowa) Nonpareil - Wednesday, October 30, 1946

Ady McKeown roomed at Y.M.C.A. building and taught school south of this city last winter - shot at midnight -he will recover. Ady McKeown, who roomed at the Y.M.C.A. building and taught school south of this city last winter, was shot in the left leg between the knee and hip Monday near midnight at the St. Louis world's fair ticket gate. Mr. McKeown was ticket man and refused to let two men in on one pass. This made one of the ruffians so furious that after a wrangle he shot Mr. McKeown. The couple immediately fled after the shooting. Mr. McKeown was taken to the Emergency hospital within the fair grounds and later by his request to the Sanitarium in St. Louis where the bullet was extracted. Mrs. S. A. McKeown, his aunt, who is a trained nurse in Burlington, (Ia.) was telegraphed and arrived at his bedside as soon as a St. Louis bound train could take her there. News of the shooting was received Thursday by the wounded man's brother, Albert McKeown, who rooms at the Y.M.C.A. building and is employed by the Batterson Stores. His brother Albert says from the latest reports that he has received his condition was somewhat better and probably would recover. The two ruffians are not know or as yet report to have been caught.

Artillerymen were responsible for the shooting of Ady McKeown, a former Muscatine boy in St. Louis October 10, according to a letter received this morning. The account of the shooting was given in the Journal recently in which it was stated that Mr. McKeown was shot by robbers. Later advices indicate that abusive artillerymen who were determined to enter the world's fair grounds, where Mr. McKeown was a gate keeper, were responsible for his injury. The victim is recovering nicely.

    M. PARKER McKEOWN. M. Parker McKeown, a well known farmer of Cedar township, where he has made his home for more than twenty years, was born in Des Moines county, Iowa, December 1, 1852.

He is a son of John and Annie (PARKER) McKeown, who came with their parents from Ireland to America in their childhood, living first in Ohio and later in Iowa. They were married in Des Moines county and there continued until their deaths. The father at one time was the owner of one hundred and eighty acres of land, all of which he divided among his children except forty acres that he owned at the time of his death. He was a man of many fine qualities and a great lover of his family. Of the eleven children comprising the home circle two died in infancy, the others being : Sarah, now of Mediapolis, Iowa ; James, who lives near Morning Sun, Iowa ; Mary, now deceased ; M. Parker, our subject ; John, who lives near Prairie City, Oklahoma ; Samantha, of Mediapolis ; Emma, of Burlington, Iowa ; Ira, of Eau Claire, Wisconsin ; and Albert, of St. Joseph, Missouri.

Reared on the home farm, M. Parker McKeown early became familiar with the labors of the field. He was educated in the country schools, gaining the foundation upon which he has been enabled to build successfully until he is now a man of good general information. He continued at home until twenty-one years of age and then worked for wages for a short time, after which he came to Conesville, Muscatine county, and purchased one hundred and eighty acres of land. There he lived until 1888, when he sold out and removed to Cedar township, acquiring fifty-seven acres, the nucleus of the well improved farm of two hundred and seventeen acres which he now owns. He is also the owner of property on East Hill, Muscatine, and his wife owns one hundred and sixty acres of good farming land in Orono township. By close attention to his business Mr. McKeown has attained a gratifying measure of success.

On the 12th of January, 1881, Mr. McKeown was united in marriage to Miss RHODA E. LORD, who was born in Muscatine county, May 7, 1851. She is a daughter of Richard and JANE SMALLEY Lord, the mother having been born in Ohio, October 27, 1822, and the father in Connecticut, January 10, 1809.
They were married in Iowa in 1840 and settled on a farm in Muscatine county, where Mr. Lord made his home for about forty years. He was called from earthly scenes in 1886, while his wife died in 1857. Of the nine children in their family, three are now living : Katie, of Conesville ; Rhoda E., now Mrs. McKeown ; and Richard J., of Nichols, Iowa . Those deceased are: Andrew, Albert, Edward, Byron, Manza, and Herman.

Two children came to brighten the home of Mr. and Mrs. McKeown :
    ADA R., born October 14, 1883 ; and
    ALBERT G., April 8, 1886.

Politically Mr. McKeown adheres to the republican party and heartily supports its principles. He has served with general acceptance as justice of the peace. He and his wife are affiliated with the United brethren church, being active workers in its behalf and also in worthy causes for the welfare of others. Mrs. McKeown is a graduate of the Muscatine high school and for nine years before her marriage taught school, becoming recognized as one of the thoroughly capable teachers of the county. She is a woman of many attractive qualities of mind and heart.

The woman’s body was found in the basement of the home of Dr. McKeown yesterday morning. She had been beaten to death, the prosecutor said.
Both Dr. Albert McKeown, a prominent university district dentist, and his wife were jailed last night on open charges but Mrs. McKeown was released late today.

Memoir of Mrs. John G. McKeown. Mrs. Annie Parker McKeown died at her house north of Mediapolis, Iowa, March 6, 1892, at 12:55 P.M. She was born near Rathfriland, County of Down, Ireland, May 21, 1829, and come with her parents, John and Margaret Parker, to Rochester, New York and then to Zanesville, Ohio, where they resided until 1847, when they came to Des Moines County. She made a profession of faith and was received in Sharon (Reformed Presbyterian) congregation in 1848 and remained a consistent member until her death. She was united in marriage to John G. McKeown, Feb. 27, 1849, and was a devoted wife and mother. Twelve children were born to them. Three preceded her to the Realm of Light, and nine remain to mourn the loss of a loving, faithful mother. She had been a sufferer with creeping paralysis for some time. It had weakened her so much that she was not able to resist an attack of la grippe that seized her Jan 20, from which time she was unable to help herself, but in all her sufferings she was very patient, and able to say the Lord's will be done. She was conscious to the last, and peacefully passed away . She was ready and waiting for the summons, to enter into that Heavenly home, "an house not made with hand."
