    "James Nickel was born May 10, 1838 in Guernsey county, Ohio. In 1851 he moved with his parents to Monroe county, Iowa. He enlisted in the Civil War, Co. A 36th Iowa Infantry in 1862. On April 10, 1864, he was wounded and taken prisoner at Jenkins Ferry, Arkansas, and was thence removed to Camp Ford, Texas, where he remained ten months and was mustered out in 1865. He married Elizabeth Alexander of Harrison county, Ohio, September 14, 1865. In 1880 he moved with his family to Rush county, Kansas where he resided until his death, November 17, 1893. The funeral was held at the residence northwest of LaCrosse by Rev. W. H. Mills of McCracken."

    Mrs. Elizbeth Nickel passed away at her home five miles northeast of McCracken Sunday, January 25, 1914, after an illness of only four or five days.
    Elizabeth Alexander was born in Harrison county, Ohio, April 10, 1834. She lived with her parents in this county until the year 1865 when she was united in marriage to James Nickel on September 14. Immediately after the marriage they moved to Monroe county, Iowa and made this their home until they came to Rush county, Kan. in 1880 where she lived until her death.
    At the age of fifteen she united with the church and remained faithful to the Presbyterian church until two years ago when she united with the church of Christ and was baptized by Rev. W.T. Hines. She was a lady of splendid Christian character and was love by all who knew her.
    She leaves to mourn her loss, R.E. Nickel, an adopted son, to whom she was a devoted mother, besides many relatives and friend in this community.
    Her funeral was attended by a large number of friends and they all felt as if they had lost one who was dear to them. The floral offering were very beautiful. The services were conducted at her residence by Rev. R.L. Greer at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday and interment was made in the Fairview cemetery by the side of her husband.
