    Service at Webber For Bert McKeown
    Funeral services will be held in the Webber Methodist Church at 2 p.m., Thursday, March 11, for Herbert (Bert) McKeown, 75, of Danbury, Neb., who died in an Oberlin, Kan., hospital Tuesday March 9.
    Mr. McKeown was born and spent the early years of his life in Jewell County. He left this area about 20 years ago. He was in the lumber business at Danbury until his retirement.
    Surviving are one daughter, and two sons, Mrs. Veda Pew of Danbury, Wendell of Los Angeles and Dwight of Kenniwick, Wash.; three grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Edith Smith of Lincoln; four brothers, Waldo, Irvin, Clifford and Tom, all of Superior. His wife died several years ago.
    Rev. Loren Silaby will officiate at the Tuesday service and the Megrue Funeral Home will be in charge. Interment will be in the Webber cemetery.

    Death Overtakes Mrs. McKeown After Illness
    Mrs. Elizabeth McKeown died Sunday at the age of 70. She had been ill for a short time with pneumonia. Six sons and a daughter survive her.
    With her husband, Mrs. McKeown came to this community more than 52 years ago. They homesteaded the farm in Jewell county southeast of Superior where she died.
    A funeral service was conducted at the home Tuesday afternoon by C.O. Olson, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, Superior. Burial was in the Webber Cemetery.
    Elizabeth J. Barclay was born Nov. 5, 1863 in Des Moines county, Iowa and died near Superior, Nebr., Dec. 17, 1933 aged 70 years, 1 month, 12 days. In early life she united with the Methodist church at Mediapolis, Iowa.
    She was married to Alexander McKeown Feb 10, 1881 who preceded her in death on Oct. 12, 1922. In the spring of 1881 they came west, and homesteaded the farm on which she died. To this union were born six sons and one daughter, who were all present when the mother passed away: Irwin of Webber, Kan.; Ross, Waldo and Tom of Superior; Herbert of Cadams; Clifford of Kansas City, Mo.; and Mrs. Edith Smith of McCook. Also surviving are eight brothers and one sister; John of Bellingham, Wash., Alex of Manchester, Kans., Tom of Superior, Wilse of Abilene, Kan., Jesse of Kansas City, Mo., Guy of Topeka, Kan., and Hettie Nicholson of Superior, Nebr.
    Mrs. McKeown was a woman with a mind thoughtful for the comfort and welfare of others, with a tongue ever kind of say the cheering and loving words, with hands ever busy to bring material aid to all. She was most active in the Auxiliary and untiring worker in the Valley View club, but most of all hers was a mother heart, always looking forward to times when her family could be united again, planning for their pleasure.

    I would say most of the settlers here are from the vicinity of Morning Sun and all are well excepting Mr. Henry McKeown who came here a little over a year ago, from Linn Grove. Mr. McKeown received a paralytic stroke on last Monday, as he was rising from a chair to give to his son as he entered his house, he fell in the arms of his son Robert McKeown. Mr. McKeown immediately lost his speech and the power of his right side. At this writing he is some better, but can only speak. It is hoped that he will recover his speech.


    NOTE: Henry did not move to Superior, Nebraska. All census records show him and his family in Yellow Springs, Des Moines County, Iowa.


    From Yellow Spring and Huron: A local history. By J. W. Merrill. Published by author in 1897. Book in Wisconsin Historical Society Library. Pages 133-134. May 12, 1848, two young men, Henry and John McKeown, landed in Burlington and came directly to Yellow Spring township, and entered land. Henry entered the land on which he lived for many years. After securing his home he returned to Ohio and married. His wife came with him to his western home, but she lived only a short time. Later he made another trip to Ohio, and married Rebecca Paxton. He lived on his farm and raised his family of seven children, all of whom went to Superior, Nebraska as they became of age. The parents moved there later, where the father died in a few years. This branch of the family are all in the west.

    John married Ann Parker, daughter of John and Margaret Parker, in 1848. He lived on this original farm till 1865, when he sold to R. M. Wilson, and bought 240 acres of Wm. Lyon, on the Wapello road, where he lived till after the death of his wife which occurred March 7th, 1892. There were twelve children born to these parents; three died in childhood. Those living are Sarah J., James A., Mary L., Moses P. lives at Myrtle, Iowa, John L., Perry, Ok. , Samantha, Burlington, Emma, Ira, Eau Claire, Wis., Albert, Burlington. The father now has his home with his son James.

    Wednesday at Beulah churchyard was laid to rest the remains of aged Grandma McKeown – 80 years and 17 days old. Mrs. McKeown died Monday evening at the home of her son-in-law J. Crawford. She was also mother of Mrs. J. Adams and Robert McKeown. A large concourse of friends followed the funeral cortege to the cemetery. Rev. Smith had charge of the services.
