    • Former judge, prosecutor Charles Hughes is dead
      Elkhart – Services for Charles E. Hughes, 79, a former judge and prosecutor, who died at 5:34 a.m. Monday at Elkhart General Hospital, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in First Congregational Church.
      Burial will be in Rice Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hartzler-Gutermuth Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the church or to any charity.
      Mr. Hughes, who lived at 23318 Forest Lane, practiced law with the firm Iemma & Hughes from 1978 to 1989. Previously he was appointed judge of Superior court I, serving for 12 years. He also had been Elkhart County prosecutor, had practiced law with his father’s firm, served as city judge and was state representative for Elkhart from 1940-41.
      Mr Hughes was born Nov. 8, 1910, in Elkhart. On Aug. 13, 1942, he married Margaret Sunthimer, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Carlene Hardy of Elkhart; a son, John F. of Eagle Lake; four grandchildren; and a sister, Marian Maxon of Litchfield, Minn.
      He was an Indiana University Law School graduate and a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of the church, where he also served as trustee. Mr. Hughes was also a member of Elkhart City and Indiana bar associations, Lions Club, Elks Lodge and Veterans of Foreigh Wars. He was an avid golfer.
