Sarah Jane McKeown never married. She was struck by lightning and survived. She always kept her hair cut short after that to prevent the headaches caused by longer hair. She lived with her sister, Samantha McKeown.

Mediapolis (IA), January 6. -- Sarah Jane McKeown passed away Monday, January 6, at 2 a.m., at her home in Mediapolis after a few days illness.
She was born at Linn Grove, January 13, 1850, and had she lived one more week  would have been eighty years of age.
She was the daughter of John and Anna Parker McKeown. Most of her life was spent in this community. She is survived by two sisters, Samantha and Mrs. Emma Brewster, of Mediapolis, and three brothers: M. F. (sic: M. P.) of Muscatine. A. R, of St. Joseph, Missouri, and J. L. of Ager (sic: Agra), Oklahoma.
Funeral services will be held from the home Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. and at 2:30 at the Sharon church.

Miss Sarah Jane McKeown, 79, well known resident of Mediapolis died January 6th, following a few days illness with pneumonia. Deceased was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John McKeown and was born near Lind Grove, in Des Moines county January 13, 1850. She is survived by two sisters, Samantha McKeown and Mrs. Emma Brewster of Mediapolis and three brothers, M. P. McKeown of Muscatine, A. R. McKeown of St. Joseph, Mo., and J. L. McKeown of Agra, Okla. The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at Sharon church, south of Morning Sun conducted by Rev. H. G. Patterson. Miss McKeown was a life-long member of the Sharon R. P. church. Mrs. J. A. McKeown, Ralph McKeown, Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Casten, Rev. and Mrs. H. G. Patterson, Mrs. J. W. Baird, Mrs. J. T. Carithers, Mrs.Margaret Willson, Mrs. Maude Mehaffy, Mrs. 0. M. Hensleigh, Mrs. Dell Copeland, Mrs. Sarah Dickson, Miss Lizzie Marshall and S. H. Curran attended the funeral services of Miss Sarah McKeown of Mediapolis, Wednesday.
