      The McElhinney family left Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, travelling overland to Pittsburgh. From there they took a boat down the Ohio River to the Mississippi River, then up the Mississippi to New Boston, Illinois where they crossed over the river and landed on what was then the Territory of Iowa. They journeyed a few miles westward from the point at which they crossed and chose a site on Honey Creek to build a new house.
