Notes - John S. Reed
John S. Reed, age 80 years, died Monday at his home of his son, P. B. Reed, in this city after several days of illness. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. J. B. Presley, were held at the Methodist church at 10 o’clock a. m. Wednesday and interment was made in the Huntsville cemetery.
Mr. Reed was a native of Indiana and was born May 12, 1850. He was married Aug. 3, 1872, to Margaret Meridith. The family had resided in different states and for a considerable time several years ago were located at Eureka Springs. In recent years Mr. and Mrs. Reed resided at Enid, Okla., where Mr. Reed was engaged as a contractor and builder, in which business he was occupied actively till a very few months ago. He was a man of remarkable energy and physical endurance, which he retained long after he was past 70 years of age, and went in the lead with men many years his junior.
Wherever located Mr. Reed was identified with religious work and was a well recognized church and Sunday school worker. He first joined the United Brethern church in 1871; moving later to where there was no congregation of that denomination, he became a member of the Methodist church and remained such throughout his life. His christian life touched a wide circle of acquaintances and everyone who knew him soon learned to esteem him highly for his sincerity of purpose and practice in his efforts of do good.
Mr. Reed is survived by his wife and the following children: Mrs. Leatha Bell of Arkansas Pass, Texas, Mrs. Edna Cassell of Sacramento, Cali., Mrs. Jessie Ogden of Los Angeles, Cali., Robert Reed of Jefferson, Oklahoma, Mrs. Mary Wright of Beverly, Kas., Mrs. Vernie Strange of Lincoln, Kas., Mrs. Hazel Ogden of Seminole, Okla., and P. B. Reed of Huntsville. All the children except the first four named were present at the funeral.
Mr. and Mrs. Reed had been at the home of their son in this city since last summer.
