Delano Hero Is Given Silver Star For Gallantry
Delano (Kern Co.), March 22 – Louis E. Gage, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lyman Gage, Sr., of Delano, was presented the Silver Star award for gallantry in action at a formal retreat ceremony closing the open house celebration of the one hundredth anniversary of the Presidio in San Francisco.
Gage at present is majoring in journalism at the University of California at Berkeley.
      Text of Citation
      The citation reads as follows:
“By direction of the president, under the provisions of Army Regulation 600-45, September 22, 1943, as amended to Louis E. Gage, 39045-987, staff sergeant, infantry, headquarters company, 222nd Infantry, for gallantry in action on April 28, 1945, near Dachau, Germany.
“After leading his platoon across an open field near Dachau under sniper fire, Sergeant Gage investigated two caves dug in the side of a road. Throwing tow fragmentation grenades in each case, he entered and discovered 11 dead German SS troops. As he left the caves, an enemy machine pistol, several machine guns and small arms opened fire upon him. Sergeant Gage borrowed a sub machine and advanced to a position less than 50 yards from the enemy, firing into their position. He repeated this performance twice in the face of heavy fire, killing 14, wounding 23 and taking eight prisoners. By this indomitable courage and intrepid gallantry, Sergeant Gage reflected great credit upon himself and the military service.”
      Recovered From Wound
Slightly more than three months prior to this exploit at Dachau, Gage was wounded in action in France on January 21, 1945. He recovered in time to participate in the drive into Germany.
Gage entered the army on May 12, 1943, after being graduated from the Delano High School. He took his advanced training at Camp Gruber, Okla.
