- DEATH OF MR. E. S. BATEMAN
God in his infinite wisdom saw fit to come into our midst and take one who was loved by all who knew him, one who was ready and willing to go.
Mr. Bateman was born in Oklahoma, April 28, 1838, died August 21, 1923. He was the father of five children all living except one. He was married to Mrs. Marina Purvis, December 9, 1866; was converted at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in the year 1882, and was baptized by the late Reverend J. C. Buckley; was a consistent and noble hearted Christian, living a good and beautiful life. At the time of his death he was eighty-five years, three months and twenty-three days old.
He was reared in Crawford county Ark., but spent many of his last years in this state. He entered the Confederate army at Ft. Smith, Ark., in November 1861, with Co. F. 17th Arkansas regiment served until the close of the war.
Mr. Bateman spent many hours reading God's Word until four years ago, he became totally blind, but enjoyed so much having others read to him, most especially his daughter, Mrs. J. F. Berry, with whom he has made his home for a number of years. Mrs. Bateman having preceded him to the grave ten years ago. He bore his afflictions with more patience than one we have ever known.
The remains were tenderly laid to rest at Pleasant Hill cemetery, where he will wait for our Lord's return. "He is not dead but sleepeth." The services were conducted by Rev. S. T. Courtney. We extend to the bereaved sons, daughter and grandchildren our deepest sympathy, assuring them of our love and appreciation of their departed one.
