Funeral services for John Henry Bateman, 64, resident of Springdale for the past 12 years, who died unexpectedly Saturday afternoon about 4:45 in the university greenhouse at Fayetteville, were held Monday morning at 9:30 at his home on Maple street, conducted by Dr. Otto Whitington, pastor of the local First Baptist church. Special music was by members of the Baptist choir. Pallbearers were William Keeton of Fayetteville, Lee Sanders, R. E. Vick, Winfred Needham, John W. Cloer and Harvey Jones.
Burial was in Bluff Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were in charge of the Callison and Riggs Funeral home.
Mr. Bateman was born August 26, 1878 at Hattiesburg, Miss., a son of Elisha and Maria Bateman. He had lived at Stillwell and Westville, Okla., and moved to Springdale from Texarkana. For several years he had been employed by the Agricultural department of the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.
Mr. Bateman is survived by his wife, Mrs. Eva Brogdon Bateman and one daughter, Betty Lou Bateman of the home; also by one brother and one sister, Andrew Bateman and Mrs. Alice Broxton and one half-brother, J. A. Purvis, all of Mississippi.
Mr. Bateman was a member of the Baptist church.
