    Other Events:

    • Occupation: Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts; Blacksmith, Selectman

    Notes:

    John Bigolo became a Freeman
    Selectmen 1665, '70, '71

"The first mention we find of John Biglo appears on the Watertown Town Records, where his marriage is the first marriage recorded in that town, viz.: "1642-30-8. John Bigulah and Mary Warin joyned in mariag before Mr. Nowell." She was the daughter of John and Margaret Warren and is said to have been born in England; she bore him thirteen (13) children and died Oct. 19, 1691. From the list of those who took the oath of fidelity at Watertown, 1652, we find that John Biggalough was one of the number and he became a freeman April 18, 1690, which we find from the roll of freemen written as John Biglo, under the same date we find Samuel Begaloo was made a freeman, and by another list, dated May 16, 1690, we find Samuiel Biggilo and John Warren, Jr., were made freemen. On the returns of soldiers who were in the service from Nov. 25, to Dec. 3, 1675, we find the names John Bigulah, Sr., Michaell Flegg and Isaac Leonard, the last named being wounded. Thus we find the name variously spelled by different officials, but when we find the name written by any member of the family in those early days it is written Biglo, Biglow, Bigelo or Bigelow. His trade appears to have been that of a blacksmith, as appears by the following taken from the town records: "Agreed Wth John Biglo yt for ten trees the towne allowed him for the setting up a shop for a Smithes forge, y't he shall either goe on with yt his promise of setting up his trade, W'h is the trade of a Smith Wth in one twelfmonth after the date hearof or else to pay unto the towne ten shillings for these ten trees he acknowledged to have off the townes." Dated March 4, 1651. He was chosen a Surveyor of Highways 1652 and 1660, a Constable 1663, and one of "the seven men" (i.e., Selectman) in 1665, '70, '71. His homestead consisted of six acres and was bounded north by Richard Ambler and William Parker, east by Thomas Straight, south by the highway, and on the west by Miles Ives. After the death of his wife Mary he married second, Oct. 2, 1694, Sarah Bemis, daughter of Joseph Bemis of Watertown. He died July 14, 1703, at the ripe old age of 86 years. His will, dated Jan. 4, 1703, was proved July 23, 1703, and is as follows:

Jonathan BIGELOW, second son and second child of John 1 and Mary (Warren) Bigelow, was born 11 December 1646 in Watertown, Middlesex co, MA. He early went to Hartford, Connecticut, where he married (1) in 1671 Rebecca Shepard, daughter of (Srgt.) John and Rebecca (Greenhill) Shepard, who was born in Hartford in 1650. She died before 1686, when Jonathan married (2) Mary Olcott, daughter of Samuel and Sarah (Stocking) Olcott. Mary was probably mother of Jonathan's five youngest children. She died 07 March 1697. He then married (3) 1709 Mary (Benton) Cole, widow of Nathaniel Cole, and a daughter of Andrew and Hannah (Stocking) Benton. He died Jan. 9, 1711, and his widow married for her second husband, March 19, 1713, Dea. John Shepard, a brother of his first wife, and she died Dec. 23, 1752, aged 90 and upwards, according to the records of the First Church. His land was recorded Nov. 24, 1674, and is described as bounded west on the road leading to Wethersfield, and we find on the records at the State House at Hartford, concerning private controversies, at the Court of Assistants at Hartford, Oct. 6, 1686. "Whereas: Jonathan jun'r, Rebecca, Mary, Sarah, John and Violet, children of Rebecca Bigelow alias Shepherd, Received judgment against Serg't John Shephered for one forth part of the estate that he received as administrator of the estate of Thomas Greenhill deceased and award was made to Jonathan jr. and brothers and sisters." His will appointed his widow Mary and son Joseph as executors, and mentions children Jonathan, Jr., John, Mary, Sarah, Violet, Joseph, Abigail, Daniel and Samuel, the last two were under age, and Thomas Olcott was appointed guardian to Daniel, aged 18, and Samuel, aged 16. Feb. 5, 1711, two years later, Samuel Benton was appointed guardian to Daniel, age 20, and Dea. John Shepherd appointed guardian to Samuel, age 18. Owing to the meagre records we are unable to give the dates of births, but give such as we have been able to gather from various sources. (Howe: 'The Bigelow Family of America,' p. 24.)

Jonathan died 9 Jan 1711, and his widow then married on 19 Mar 1713 Deacon John Shepard, brother of Jonathan's first wife. She died 27 Dec 1752, allegedly aged 98 years, 7 months, 26 days.

Jonathan's land was recorded as early as 1674, and is described as bounded west on the road leading to Wethersfield. His children Jonathan jr, Rebecca, Mary, Sarah, John, and Violet, children of his first wife Rebecca, are mentioned in a controversy over settlement of their grandfather John Shepard's estate in 1685.

Jonathan's will appointed Mary his wife and son Joseph as executors, and mentions all surviving children, with Thomas Olcott appointed as guardian of the two youngest, who were 15 and 18 years of age. In 1711 the guardianship was changed, with Samuel Benton appointed guardian of Daniel, and Deacon John Shepard guardian of Samuel. Notes:

Joshua Bigelow was the son of John Bigelow and Mary Warren. He was born in Watertown, Massachusetts, on November 5, 1655. When the War with King Philip broke out, he enlisted in the forces of Governor Winslow, and was in the memorable Swamp Fight, December 19, 1675, where he was wounded. He received, therefore, a grant of land in Worcester, as well as his Narraganset (Westminister) grant. He was in the Company to whom Narraganset number 2 was assigned, and drew lot number 12.

He married in Watertown, October 20, 1676, Elizabeth Flagg, daughter of Thomas and Mary Flagg, who was born in Watertown on March 22, 1655. Joshua & Elizabeth were the parents of at least eleven children. Sometime after 1705, they moved from Watertown to Worcester, where they lived for many years. Elizabeth died there on August 9, 1729. In June, 1742 at the age of 86, Joshua took up residence in Westminister with his son Eliezer. He was the only Narraganset soldier who ever became an actual resident of Westminister.

  1. 15.  Jonathan Bigelow Descendancy chart to this point (3.Jonathan2, 1.John1) was born on 22 Mar 1673 in Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut; died on 29 Jul 1749 in Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut; was buried in Ancient Burying Ground, Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut.

    Notes:

Jonathan Bigelow of Hartford, Conn., son of Jonathan and Rebecca (Shepherd) Bigelow, was born in Hartford, March 22, 1673, and married Dec. 14, 1699, Mabel Edwards, daughter of Richard and Elizabeth (Tuthill) Edwards. She was born Dec. 13, 1685, and died in Hartford, May 14, 1765. She was a relative of Rev. Jonathan Edwards the theologian. He settled near his father's in Wethersfield Lane and died July 29, 1749. His will, dated Nov. 16, 1738, and proved Oct., 1749, mentions wife Mabel, daughters Jerusha, Rebecca, Mabel, and Irena, and sons Timothy and Jonathan, and by the records in clerk's office at Hartford we find that John Poogotoon (Indian) and Sarah his wife, with the consent of their master, Thomas Reeves of Southold, Long Island, did bind themselves to serve Jonathan Bigelow four and one half years and their son Sampson for nineteen years and six months till he was 21 years of age, dated July 12, 1723. Their children were probably born in Hartford, but owing to the defective records of those days we have the birth of but two, and find the rest of the children on the records of the First Church among the baptisms, and the following are the children as we find from the scanty records:

    1. Timothy, b. June 20, 1702; m. Abigail Olcutt; lived in Hartford.
    2. Mabel, b. Nov. 12, 1704; m. Daniel Marsh.
    3. Joseph, bapt. Sept. 15, 1706.
    4. Rebecca, bapt. Dec. 5, 1708; d. Jan. 8, 1754, unm.
    5. Irena, bapt. Nov. 4, 1711; m. Daniel Marsh.
    6. Jonathan, bapt. June 27, 1714; m. Tabitha [Coleman].
    7. Jekusha, bapt. June 23, 1717; m. Elisha Butler.
    8. Anne, bapt. Jan. 7, 1721.

His will dates Sept. 3, 1731, mentions wife Sarah; sons Joseph, Elisha and Josiah; daughters Sarah, Mary and Abigail, and kinsman Jona.Williams, probably his brother-in-law.
