Entrance at approximately 264 Arlington Street.

The town’s first burying ground, now known as the Old Burying Ground or Arlington Street Cemetery, was established in the 1660s at the southeast corner of Mount Auburn and Arlington Streets. In 1703, Watertown established a second burial ground, Grove Street Cemetery, where many Watertown residents are buried. [Grove Street Cemetery is now in the city of Waltham, which broke off from Watertown in 1738]

Town records first mention the Old Burying Place in 1692. The location of the cemetery here marks the westward movement of the town center. Among the early settlers buried here were John & Mary Coolidge ancestors of President Coolidge. Hugh Mason, who led an attack on Watertown Indians, was buried here in 1676. Joseph Coolidge, the only Watertownsman to fall on April 19, 1775 was buried here, as were 5 unknown men who lost their lives in an accident at the U.S. Arsenal in 1816. The burial ground was across the street from the house of 1st parson, George Phillips, the meeting house was located on present Hillside Rd.

The cemetery sits on 1.24 acres. The earliest death date in 1665, the latest 1939. There are approximately 300 headstones.

The Massachusetts Historical Commission refers to this cemetery in MACRIS as WAT.801 Old Burying Place - Old Burying Ground.
