MINNIE BROWN DIES AT MADISON Mrs. Minnie Brown, wife of Henderson Brown of near Madison, died at her home Tuesday afternoon, after an illness of several months. Mrs. Brown was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Millard Reid, was born May 7, 1864, in Monroe County. In early life, she united with the Ash Baptist Church, and later moved her membership to the Madison Baptist Church. She was married to Henderson Brown in 1886. Two children were born to this union, one of whom, Norma Jewell, died in 1901 at the age of three years. She is survived by her aged husband, a daughter, Mrs. Nora Stewart, a granddaughter, Mrs. William Hewgley, a great-grand-daughter, Lenora Arlene Hewgley, all of Madison; two brothers, John Reid, Madison; Henry Reid, Tulsa, Oklahoma; a sister, Mrs. Relda Powell, Madison. Centrali, July 27. - is Bertha Gritton, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Gritton and Mitchell Gallop, son of Mr. and Mrs. Asa Gallop, and Miss Helen Roberts, daughter of Mrs. William Russell, and Harry Bugg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Newman Bugg, were married in a double wedding ceremony in Pittsfield, Ill, July 13, and the marriage was kept secret until it came to friends and relatives here from a friend of the brides and bridegrooms in Pittsfield. Both brides have been employed as telephone operators in the local office of the Missouri Telephone Company for the past several years. All of the contracting parties have relatives in Moberly, among whom is Ray Gritton, an employe of the Mechanics bank, a brother of Mrs. Gallop. They will continue to make their homes in Centralia, where Mr. Gallop is employed with the Chance Manufacturing Co, and Mr. Bugg as the M.J. | 4911 | Mortuary record Gritton. O.J. Gritton passed away yesterday afternoon at 12:57 o'clock at his home, corner of Vermilion and Davis streets. He had been ill five weeks of acute consumption which developed into a complication. Deceased was 45 years old and leaves a wife to mourn his loss. Mr. Gritton moved here from Rossville about two years ago. He was proprietor of the Big Four meat market. He was well liked and popular with all who knew him. Mr. Gritton was a member of the Church of Christ and of the Modern Woodmen of America. His father lives in Penfield and he leaves three brothers, one sister and hour half-brothers. One brother, Ed Gritton, resides in this city. The funeral services will be held Friday morning at 11 o'clock at Union chapel, seven miles northwest of this city. | 4912 | Mortuary record. Gritton. Nancy, wife of J.R. Gritton, died Saturday at 9:15 p.m., of old age, she being 85. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 from Union chapel, six miles north of Danville. Rev. Oscar Gravat officiating; text, 2nd Corinthian, 15:22. Interment in Johnson cemetery. Nancy A. Atkinson was born in Mercer county, Kentucky, October 17, 1808, and was united in the bonds of wedlock to John R. Gritton, March 22, 1830. The result of that union was ten children, five boys and five girls, eight of whom have preceded their mother to the other shore. The family emigrated from Kentucky to Illinois in the fall of1840 and settled on the farm where the subject of this sketch died. Deceased was well liked by all who knew her and was a christian woman who "went about doing good" all her life. | 4919 | Mr. Elliott was born Feb. 13, 1909, a son of James E. and Eva Hahn Elliott. He had been a lifelong resident of the community. He married Evelyn Gritton Aug. 28, 1937, at Muscatine. Mr. Elliott was a member of the Knights of Pythias lodge and the Muscatine Power Boat club. Surviving are his widow; a son, Thomas E. Elliott, at home; three daughtes, Mrs. Kenneth Carpenter of Muscatine; Mrs. Jerry Musgrove of Moline; and Miss Barbara Elliott, at home; a brother, John E. Born September 15,1920 in McAfee, he was the son of the late Hugh Fletcher Ison and Emma Minerva Gritton Ison. He was a retired life time farmer, an a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier for 17 years in Harrodsburg. He was a devout Christian and a active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He graduated from Locust Grove Elementary School, Harrodsburg in 1938. and the University of Kentucky 1942. He is a Veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II from 1942-1945, wounded in Italy and honorably discharged with the Rank of Captain 1953. Survivors include two sons, Larry James Ison (June) of Mercer County, Michael Hugh Ison (Pamela) of Junction City, three daughters, Cathy Marie Knight (Bill), of Raliegh, N. C. Jean DeVean Connatser.(David),of Powell, Tenn., and Sallie Dawn Phelps (O.J.) currently living in Hawaii, He also leftt 28 grandchildren, 84 great grandchildren, and 11 great-great grandchildren. | 4921 | Mr. Ronald Alan Merriott, 76, of Lebanon, died Thursday, May 9, 2013, at Witham Memorial Hospital in Lebanon. Mr. Merriott was born a twin and one of eleven children to the late Jasper Cleo and Frances Lillian (Frost) Merriott on Jan. 25, 1937, in Lebanon. A lifelong resident of Lebanon, he graduated from Lebanon High School in 1953. Following high school, he joined the U.S. Army. In the army, Ron worked as a medic and served his country honorably. On Feb. 13, 1971, he married Donna Lea Yeazel, in Catlin, Ill. Mrs. Merriott survives. Mr. Merriott was a firefighter, first volunteering for Center Township Fire Department for four years, and then working full time for the Lebanon Fire Department for 22 years. He retired from LPD as a lieutenant. He also worked part time for Russell & Hitch Funeral Home in Lebanon. He was a dedicated family man, and he enjoyed collecting coins and fire department memorabilia. Mr. Merriott was a charter member of the Lebanon Christian Church in Lebanon, and a member of Boone Masonic Lodge No. 9 F. & A. M. in Lebanon, O.E.S. No. 23 in Lebanon, Scottish Rite in Indianapolis and Knights of Pythias in Thorntown. Survivors include his wife, Donna Merriott of Lebanon; two children, Thomas H. (Christina) Merriott and Ronna Lea (Chris) Gordon, all of Lebanon; one grandson, Christopher A. Gordon; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, John Merriott, Ora "Ding" Merriott, Alfred "Beanie" Merriott, Charles "Turtle" Merriott and Donald "Donnie" Merriott; and five sisters, Dorothy Davis, Marthena Red, Charlotte Merriott, Laura "Betty" Hughes and Clara "Shorty" Russell. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints; and had been a Gray Lady of the Red Cross 12 years, having been cited for her services. Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. George (Lillian) Wamsley of Elmhurst, Ill., with whom she had made her home; three brothers, Joe and Elmer Gritton of Aledo and Lewis Gritton of Muscatine; one sister, Mrs. Wesley (Earl) Norton of Joy; also three grandchildren. | 4930 | Mrs. Charles Gritton Died Wednesday Mrs. Charles Gritton, life-long resident of this community, died Wednesday morning, July 24, at 6:40 o'clock, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Larry McBride of north of Centralia, after a few days' illness. She was 83 years of age. Mr. Gritton was born Georgie Dry in Monroe County, north of Centralia, April 21, 1846, and spent her entire life in that vicinity. She was married to Charles Gritton, who preceded her in death by several years. Surviving relatives are three sons and four daughter and they are Finn Gritton of Oklahoma, Mrs. Tom Akers of Long Beach, Calif., Earl Gritton of Centralia, Frank Gritton of Madison, Mrs. Larry McBride, Mrs. Ernest Ball, and Mrs. Homer Alexander of north of Centralia. She also leaves two sisters, Mrs. I.G. Noel of Centralia and Mrs. Aaron Hulen of Slater. Mrs. Gritton was a member of the church at Tulip and was known by her many friends as a fine Christian mother. While looking through some old clothes in the attic she came across an old satchel and opening it discovered that it contained $2,3400 in gold and paper money, $2,00 in United States Bonds and a certificate on a building and loan association, near $7.000 in all. Clem had hidden the money about twelve years ago when so many banks were failing. On his death bed he called his wife to him and talked a number of things but said nothing about the money. | 4940 | Mrs. Eliza Gritton Dead Mrs. Eliza Gritton, 78, died Thursday morning January 28, 1937 at 1:30 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. James McKenney of near Madison. Mrs. Gritton had been in very poor health since April 1935 when she sustained a fracture in her hip. Since that time she made her home with her children. Deceased was born in Boone County, October 6, 1858 and was the daughter of the late Ambrose Hulen and wife, pioneer settlers of Boone County. In 1876, she was united in marriage to James Gritton who preceded her in death several years ago. Mrs. Gritton is survived by two daughters, Mrs. McKenney of Madison, Mrs. George Forsythe of Jefferson City, two sisters, Mrs. Tom Gritton and Mrs. W.T. Goodnight of Moberly. She is an aunt of Earl Gritton of this city, and is well known here. Funeral rites were conducted Friday afternoon in Madison by Rev. E.M. Richmond of Moberly and Rev. M.O. Paul of Madison. | 4943 | Mrs. Emma Cooley. Mrs. Emma Cooley died at 7 Sunday evening at her home, 1013 Third avenue from cancer. She had been ill since March and was bedfast during the entire time. Emma Gritton was born January 7, 1878, in Rochester, Cedar county, Io., and there she grew to womanhood. She was married January 1, 1900, to Charles Cooley and three years later the couple removed to Muscatine. In January of this year they came to Rock Island. Beside her husband, she leaves her mother, Mrs. Mary Gritton of Muscatine, two brother, Thomas and Norman of Rochester and a sister, Mrs. Clara Lambert, of Illinois City. | 4946 | Mrs. Flora Gritton Allin, wife of Mr. Jack Allin, of this place, died at Norton Infirmary, Louisville, about 8:30 o'clock Sunday night, May 12, 1935. She had not been well for some time, but her condition was not considered serious until a few weeks ago when she was taken to Louisville to a specialist and passed through a critical operation. A native of Mercer County, Mrs. Allin was the daughter of Thomas Gritton and the late Minerva Bunton Gritton and would have been 55 years old in June. She has been to her family a devoted Christian wife and mother in the deepest and truest sense. Surviving are her husband, Mr. Jack Allin, and five sons, Bushrod W. Allin, Washington, D. C.; Jack Allin, Jr., and Fred Allin, of Madison, Wis.; Tom Allin, of Harrodsburg and Dr. Robin Allin, of Kansas City, Mo.; her father, Mr. Thomas Gritton, and four sisters, Mrs. Hugh Ison, Mrs. Holman Hogue, all of Mercer County; Mrs. Bertha Royce and Mrs. Huntley Ransdell, of Boyle County. Mrs. Allin's funeral was at the Harrodsburg Christian Church Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. T. Hassell Bowen. The burial was in Spring Hill cemetery. The casket bearers were her five devoted sons, and a brother-in-law, Tom Allin, of Louisville.
