358 Body Found in Lot Identified as Laborer
The body of a man who died Tuesday night in San Joaquin General Hospital, 12 hours after being found unconscious in a lot adjacent to 146 W. Weber, was identified yesterday as Alve W. Cassity, 43, a laborer, injured February 12 when he was struck by a car.
Coroner’s deputies said an autopsy showed he had a fractured skull, and that his death was caused by a cerebral hemorrhage.
However, deputies declined to link the injury to the traffic accident, pending laboratory examination of brain tissue to determine the approximate time the injury was sustained.
Police records show Cassity was struck 3 1/2 weeks ago by a car driven by Narcisco Cortez, 69, of 335 S. Madera, at Main and Center streets.
Witnesses told officers Cassity staggered into the path of Cortez’ car, but the driver was cited on charges of pedestrian right of way violation and for driving with improper equipment.
Funeral arrangements are pending in the Chapel of the Palms.

360 Bonita "Bonnie" Carolyn Pierce Walterbusch, 67, passed away on January 4, 2021, peacefully at her home. Bonnie was born to the late William Edward Pierce and Bessie Caroline Highfield Pierce on April 18, 1953. Bonnie was married to John Walterbusch and they lived together in Dayton, Ohio, where they raised their daughter, Tracey Lynn Walterbusch (Bill Levendusky). Bonnie graduated from Beavercreek High School in 1971, and from Kettering College of Medical Arts with an Associate of Science in Respiratory Therapy and a Bachelor of Science in Business from Wright State University. She was always quick to smile, and she made sure her family knew how much she loved and cared for them. She would, on occasion, send simple but valued gifts to her family to show that love. Her desire to make a difference in the lives of others is even seen in her death as she wanted her body to be donated to Wright State University Medical School for purposes of research and education. Her kind spirit could be seen in her generous contributions to the local food bank.

“It was the first one I ever took,” the boy said. “I had experimented on a dozen or more, but never had been able to back them away from the curb. This one was parked so I could drive it forward.”
The officers arrested the boy when they spotted the stolen car in front of them.
Detective Miklas said the boy gave him names of three “sheik bandits” who had ben patronizing the dance hall where he and his mother, Mrs. Velma Cassidy, 620 South Seventeenth street, operated a check stand. They had confided hold ups in him, he said.

He also was charged with being one of the gang which tried to haul away the safe from Pelton’s garage and abandoned both truck and safe. He was paroled at that time to his mother.

364 Boy’s mother consoles friend who shot son
By Stan Jones
Star-Telegram Writer
This year, for the first time in his life, 12-year-old Floyd Ronald Hughes, was growing out of his “skin and boens” frame and getting over his ear infections as well as the nagging health problems that had always seemed to plague him.
His mother, Maroy Hughes, looked back on the year saying, ‘This was the best year of his life.”
“Ronnie” died Tuesday at a hospital from a bullet wound to the head.
Tuesday night, Mrs. Hughes went to see the 10-year old youngster who accidentally shot her son.
The boy was crying when Mrs. Hughes arrived. He had been drying since Monday. That day, when the boy became frightened after hearing someone open the front screen door of his house, he went to a closet and got a rifle. As he approached the door, the gun went off.
Ronnie, who had gone to the boy’s house to see if he wanted to come out to play, fell back on the front porch, where ambulance personnel found him.
With all the control that a woman seemingly born into hard luch could muster – her husband died last year when he suffered a heart attack on a Grand Prairie golf course – Mrs. Hughes consoled the crying child who had accidentally taken her son’s life.
“I told him didn’t know what happened. He just went to sleep and he’s up there with his daddy. So don’t dry no more.”
Then Mrs. Hughes cried.
Ronnie was born prematurely and spent most of childhood unable to do all of the things other children could do, his mother said. He had to have several operations for ear infections that left him weak and sickly, she said.
It wasn’t until this summer that he could get out to play with the other children, she said.
He was a student at William James Elementary. This summer, Ronnie joined the Panther Boys Club and took swimming lessons.
A graveside service was to be held at 10 a.m. today at Rose Hill. Mrs. Hughes only son will be buried next to his father, Floyd R. Hughes Sr., an army retiree.
By one of life’s twists, Mrs. Hughes was going to take Ronnie to visit his father’s grave the day he was shot, but their car was acting up and the trip had to be postponed, she said.
“I had told him we had to stop going so much to the cemetery,” she said.
Survivors include his mother, a sister, Linda Lynn Sharpe of Fort Worth; and grandparents, Mrs. Myrtle Hughes of Fort Worth and Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Sanders of Fort Worth.

373 Brookfield Pilot Lost Since Friday Afternoon Flight
Accompanied by a Stranger Wanting a Lesson, Said to Have a Gun.
Ask Myers To Search
Local Flier Out of Town So He Could Not Answer Plea.
Bulletin
Brookfield, Oct. 28 – Cap. W.J. Ramsey of the Missouri Highway Patrol received a report today that a plane, believed to be that of Bivens, landed at Nelsonville, Marion County, Mo., last night and took off again today.
Captain Ramsey said the report came from a patrolman working at the Hannibal office. The information stated that a plane bearing the number, NC-24796, had been seen to take off.
The plane in which Carl Bivens and an unidentified passenger were riding bore that number.
Carl Bivens, airplane pilot of Brookfield and well known flier in Chillicothe aviation enthusiasts, and a stranger who was said to be carrying a gun, are missing after having taken off for a flight from the Brookfield airport yesterday afternoon, according to an Associated Press report.
Las night Andy Myers, local pilot and the co-owner of the Myers-Luther Airport here, was called to ask if he would take his plane into the air to help in a search for the missing plane which is believed to be down somewhere in this area since it was not carrying enough gasoline for a flight of more than 100 miles. Myers is in Bethany and was not reached.
Police Chief Ed Carroll of Brookfield asked airport attendants and police throughout the country to watch for the yellow Taylor Cub monoplane which is owned by Bivens and in which the men started their flight.
The stranger, according to the Associated Press dispatch from Brookfield, had asked for a flying lesson. He was said to have been about 29 years old. Carroll said that Bivens seldom carried much money.
A search of the immediate region around Brookfield has been planned with the possibility that the men had crashed, unnoticed, or were forced to land some miles from a telephone.
The yellow monoplane is familiar to people of Chillicothe who have seen it in flight over the city on many occasions. Bivens was a frequent Sunday afternoon visitor to the local airport.

391 Burglary is a fatal surprise

A 73-year-old Inkster man died of a heart attack after being awakened by a burglar in the bedroom of his home at about 6 a.m. Wednesday, Inkster police said.
Police arrested a suspect and said they considered the death a homicide.
The victim was Harold Gotts, who lived with his wife, Lela, 90.
Her daughter, Marlene Renaud, said “The first thing she knew, the buy pulled her out of bed, and she was on the floore, and he was trying to make her tell where her money was … The buy beat her. Her face is a mess … She’s all black and blue, but they checked her at the hospital, and she’s OK.
“Harold tried to get the guy out of there and said he had money in his wallet downstairs and got him downstairs. She tried to call the police. He’d cut all the phone cords, but she didn’t know that.
“The guy went back upstairs to here, but she looked out the window and said, “There’s a car, somebody’s coming,’ and he ran out of here …
“He took their car. I think Harold must have give him the keys. Anything to get him out of there. They keys were downstairs.
“Mother said, ‘He could have killed me, and wouldn’t have given him my money.’
“Then she came down and saw Harold here … He was down here on the floor … She went next door and banged on the door, and they took it from there …
“He had a stroke about four years ago … I believe he was dead when the ambulance got him.”
Inkster Detective Steve Borisch said the burglar got in through a basement window. Police said a tracking dog led them to the suspect in a nearby house. The couple’s care was found about half a mile away, Borisch said.
Gotts was known in his neighborhood for selling homegrown fruits and vegetables from a backdoor produce stand.
“They have about 3 1/2 acres here, and it’s all cultivated, grass and flowers and fruit and vegetables,” Renaud said. “They lived for their garden.”
