51 Carolyn J. Warren
Leipsic - Carolyn J. Warren, 85, of Leipsic, died 12:50 a.m. Sunday, August 2, 2015 at St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima. She was born March 16, 1930 in Putnam County to the late Harry and Carrie (Shafer) Winover. On June 14, 1949, she married Raymond "Jake" Warren, who died February 17, 1999.
Carolyn is survived by 2 sons: Robert (Irene) Warren of Kalida; Paul (Darla) Warren of Bluffton and Barb Punches of Hamler; 7 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren and two sisters: Luella (Keith) Troyer of Continental and Onetta Payne of McComb. She is preceded in death by a son: Gary Warren.
Carolyn was a cook. She was a member of New Hope Bethel Church, Hamler; Leipsic Senior Citizens and Leipsic Fire Department Auxiliary.
Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 11, 2015 at LOVE-HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Leipsic, with Rev. Ruth Carter-Crist officiating. Burial will follow in Sugar Ridge Cemetery, Leipsic. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday, August 10, 2015 and one hour prior to service on Tuesday at the funeral home.

53 Catherin Schafer
Continental – Mrs. Catherine Schafer,63, of Continental, died at 8:30 p.m. Sunday in a St. Petersburg, Fla., hospital. She suffered a heart attack a few hours after arriving at her winter home in Florida.
Born March 17, 1898, in New Bavaria, she was the daughter of Nicholas and Margaret Schuller. She was married to William H. Schafer and he survives.
Also surviving are a son, John Leland Schafer, Defiance: a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Ellen Decious, San Francisco: a sister, Mrs. Irene Kramer, Lorain, and six grandchildren.
Mrs. Schafer, a resident of Continental since 1922 was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church here. She was a member of the Garden Club and the Ohio Club of Florida.
Services are at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Defiance. Friends may call at the Walker Funeral Home after 2 p.m. Thursday. The Rosary will be recited there at 8 p.m. Thursday.

54 Charles Alvin Harbaugh, 2142, Washington, DC. [son of Thomas Jefferson Harbaugh and Anna Scott] He was born in 1871 in Findley, Ohio. He was a pen artist, photographer and clerk for 40 years in the Treasury and Survey Departments in Washington, D.C.. He received his first appointment from President McKinley in the 1890's. He was one of the first three men in the Bureau of Standards, then a part of the Coast and Geodetic Surveys. He was later in the Life Saving Service, subsequently part of the U.S. Coast Guard, where he worked up all the official, annual reports and made official photographs of ship wrecks, some of which were published in the National Geographic in June of 1918. He left to become assistant to Charles Dawes in the U.S. Bureau of Budget. He retired to a small farm just outside of Washington, D.C. . He was the first Washington columnist under the title of Uncle Mike. Married Nov 10, 1896, in Putnam Co., Ohio, Elizabeth Morris, born July 20, 1979 at Columbus Grove, Ohio to Joseph Morris, M.D. and Diana Seitz. She reported that all the children were born in Washington. She lives at Hyattsville, Md.; they had seven children. (Harbaugh History, page 69)

55 Charles Douglas Harper, 78, North Manchester passed away February 20, 2020 at 1:30 p.m. at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. On October 31, 1941, Charles was born in Lafayette, Kentucky to Jack and Mary (Walker) Harper.

Charles loved golfing at Sycamore Golf Course, dining out, he was an avid gun collector and loved keeping his lawn perfectly manicured. He most recently volunteered his time mowing at Timbercrest where he resided. Charles was always happy when he was spending time with his children and grandchildren. On April 15, 1961, Charles married Sandra Sue Freeman. He and Sandy had a heart for children and over the years opened their home to many foster children. Sandy passed away on August 13, 2015 after 54 years of marriage.

The memory of Charles Harper will be forever remembered by his sons, Mitchell (Tracy) Harper, Columbia City, Indiana, Christopher Harper, Plymouth, Aaron (Leslie Shewman) Harper, Akron, Indiana; his daughter, Sarah (Kim) Carpenter, Wabash, Indiana; one brother, William (Trish) Harper, South Bend, Indiana; one sister, Cheryl (Richard) Conroy, The Villages, Florida; seven grandchildren, Blake (Emily) Harper, Colton Harper, Kailen (Haylee Bidwell) Carpenter, Kamden Carpenter, Konner Carpenter, Jaxon Harper, Emerson Harper; and one great-grandchild, Kynnley Carpenter. Charlie was also survived by his special friend, Jan Butcher, North Manchester. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and one great-grandchild, Caden Henry Harper.

56 Charley Bill, 77, passed away at 1:47 a.m.

He was the son of Roy P. and Mary E. (Sullivan) Hiltner. On May 20, 1972, he married Janet Kohart, who survives in Continental.

Also surviving are five children: Jim (Tammy), Continental, and Bill Hiltner, Park City, KY, Amy (Chris) Miller, Van Wert, Robin (Jim) Slattman, Lakeland, FL, and Craig (Shelby) Shisler, Oakwood; a brother, David (Donna); a sister, Barb (Rex) Shalter; and twelve grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.

Having lived quite a life, he was an avid pilot like his father, a crop duster for 30 years and he and his wife owned Charley Bills Country Western Café for 22 years. He was also a substitute post office carrier for 24 years. He loved to auctioneer for benefits and charities. In his younger years he was a milkman and a rodeo clown. He was a member of Dupont Church of the Brethren, the Ohio Flying Farmers, and the Small Time Farmers, and was a former School Board member. He did it all. But what he loved most were all his grandchildren. He was very proud of them.

Services will be at Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Continental, with his son, Pastor Jim Hiltner and Rev. Terry Porter, officiating. Burial will follow in Monroe Cemetery, Continental.

59 Cleopha (Opha) Spencer, 76, Route 2, a retired farmer, died at 6:45 a.m. Monday in Defiance Hospital. He was admitted to the hospital Sunday afternoon.

Born in Putnam County, March 31, 1878, Mr. Spencer was a life-long resident of this area. He was married Jan. 15, 1919 to Catharine Morris, who survives.

He was a member of the Dupont Church of the Brethren.

Also surviving are two sons, Wilbur H., Cloverdale, and Willis, at home; one grandchild; and a brother, Amsiah, Pioneer.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the North Mount Zion Church, north of Continental, the Rev. Billy Krugh, Leipsic, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The Walls-Walker Funeral Home, Continental, is in charge of arrangements.

Martha M. Mayes, 95, died at 8:31 p.m. Oct. 16, 1998, at Putnam County Ambulatory Care, Ottawa.
She was born Aug. 7, 1903, in North Creek to Henry and Mary Weller Morris. She was married to Overton V. Mayes, who died Aug. 17, 1985.
Mrs. Mayes was a homemaker. She was a member of Hartsburg United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Howard Mayes of Continental; two daughters, Mildred B. Weddle of Albuquerque, N.M., and Juanita Sullivan of Continental; a brother, Daniel Morris of Defiance; six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, George Morris; five sisters, Rebecca Rue, Catherine Spencer; Margaret Friend, Elizabeth Burden and Anna Morris; and a grandchild.
Services will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Continental. The Rev. Kay Wilcox will officiate. Burial will be in North Mount Zion Cemetery, Continental.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. until the service Tuesday at the funeral home.

Continental – Clyde Shafer, 68, died at 9:50 p.m. Thursday in St. Rita’s Hospital, Lima, where he had been a patient one week. He was a retired fireman and custodian.
Born July 6, 1898, in Putnam County, he was the son of John and Ella Shafer.
Surviving are his wife, Hazel; one step son, Dallas Nofsinger of Continental; three grandchildren; four brothers, William and Forest, both of Continental; John E. of Oregon and Carol of Toledo, and two sisters Mrs. Ray (Mary) Thompson of Continental and Mrs. Thomas (Ida) Krumm of Toledo.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in Walker Funeral Home. Rev. Larry Tompkins will officiate and burial will be in Monroe Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.

62 Columbus Grove, Dec. 14 – C. Harvey Slusser, 78, died in his home, west of Columbus Grove, this morning as a result of a stroke of paralysis suffered Thursday morning. He is survived by his widow, Catherine Slusser; three daughters, Martha Slusser, at home; Mrs. I.H. Mason, of route 2, Lima and Mrs. Mary E. Keirns, of Columbus Grove; three sons, Ira of Defiance, Joseph of Vaughnsville, and Morris, of Lima; one sister, Mrs. Sadie Overly, of Peru, Ind., and one brother, Jesse, of Marcy, Ind.; Funeral services will be held in the home at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. Hugh Williams of the Baptist church Findlay officiating. Burial will be in the Truro cemetery, west of Columbus Grove. A son-in-law, I.H. Mason, is president of the Allen county farm bureau.

She was born Aug. 3, 1913, in Miller City to Oliver and Della Whitbey Heffley. On Oct. 5, 1933, she married Forest J. Schafer, who died March 2, 1982.
Mrs. Schafer was a homemaker.

Walter J. “Jack” Good, 66, died at 3:46 p.m. Oct. 23, 1996, at Toledo Hospital.
He was born Jan. 1, 1930, in Toledo to Alva and Fayetta Wilson Good.
On April 26, 1947, he married Helen G. Thompson, who survives.
Mr. Good retired in 1988 as a millwright at Central Foundry, Defiance, where he had worked since 1948. He was a member of the Continental Emergency Medical Service and fire department from 1954 to 1991, and was a past fire chief. He was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church, Continental.
Survivors also include three sons, Richard (Linda) Good of Defiance, Michael Good and Jeffrey (Deb) Good, both of Continental; two brothers, Earnest Good of Etna Green, Ins., and Alva A. Good of Paulding; two sisters, Betty Holtsberry of Paulding and Jenetta Husted of Sherwood; a stepsister, Eileen Edsell of Akron; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Good.
Services will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Christ United Methodist Church, Continental.

Mr. Dusseau has lived in this area his entire life and was employed as a die engineer for the Electric Auto-Lite Co at Toledo for 30 years. He retired 5 yrs ago and was a member of the company's 25 year club. A member of Blessed Sacrament Church, he was also a member of the church's Holy Name Society.
