    Mrs. Gardner died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.
    Hilma Robertson was born Dec. 8, 1904, in Morning Sun, Iowa, the daughter of John P. and Lena M. Baird Robertson. She married Herbert V. Gardner June 22, 1926, in Morning Sun. He died in June 1992.
    Mrs. Gardner had worked for the Rock Island County Agriculture Soil Conservation Service, retiring in 1962.
    She was a member of the Methodist Women of the church.
    Survivors include daughters and son-in-law, Kathryn Gustafson, Rock Island, and Dorothy and M. Gordon Tipple, Rock Island; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, Clayton Robertson, McAllen, Texas; and sisters, Marian Smith and Barbara Howe, both of Manteca, Calif., Dorothy Swanson, Sheffield, Iowa, and Betty Caparoon, Muscatine, Iowa.

    Funeral services were held Monday afternoon in the Sharon R.P. church for John P. Robertson, 88, who died Saturday, August 23 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Robert Swanson in Burlington. Officiating at the services was the Rev. J.O. Edgar. Burial was in Sharon Cemetery.

    Mr. Robertson was born February 19, 1870 in Indiana. He was the son of John and Elizabeth Van Osdol Robertson. On December 31, 1896 he was married to Lena M. Baird of the Sharon Community. His active years were spent in farming in Louisa and Des Moines counties.

    He was preceded in death by his wife and one son, and is survived by seven daughters and two sons. They are Mrs. Marjorie Brown, Fulton, MO, Mrs. Gertrude Fish, Wapello, Mrs. Hilma Gardner, Rock Island, Il., Mrs. Dorothy Swanson, Burlington, Mrs. Marian Smith, Island of Formosa, Mrs. Betty Caparoon, Muscatine, Mrs. Barbara Howe, Manteca, California, Clayton Robertson, Elisa, Texas and James Robertson, Morning Sun. Also surviving are one sister, Mrs. Bess Milburn, Wapello; three brothers, Irvin Robertson and Mark Robertson, both of Davenport, and Arthur Robertson of Bettendorf, 21 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

    Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon in Sharon Reformed Presbyterian Church for Mrs. John P. Robertson, 74, who died in Burlington hospital Monday, September 29. Mrs. Robertson had been hospitalized for more than two weeks with a heart ailment.

    Lena Mabel Baird was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James W. Baird and was born in Des Moines county on August 20, 1978. On December 31, 1906 she was married to John P. Robertson who survives.

    Also surviving are two sons, Clayton and James, both of Morning Sun; Mrs. Marjorie Brown, Fulton, Mo., Mrs. Gertrude Fish, Wapello; Mrs. Hilma Gardner, Rock Island, Ill., Mrs. Dorothy Swanson, Burlington; Mrs. Mirian Smith, Brooklyn, N.Y.; Mrs. Betty Caparoon, Muscatine, and Mrs. Barbara Howe, Manteca, Calif. One son, Donald, two brothers and one sister are dead.

    Other survivors include 4 brothers, a sister, 21 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.

    Final rites were in charge of Re. John O. Edgar and interment was in Sharon cemetery.

    In the death of James Wallace Baird, which occured September 27th (1923), the community suffers a real loss. He was one who could be depended upon, clear spoken, and ever ready to help those in need. His kindly counsel will be greatly missed.

    He was born September 18, 1847, in Louisa County, Iowa, and died at is home near Mediapolis, Iowa, nine days after his seventy-sixth birthday. On April 7th, 1871, he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Walkenshaw and had lived in the home where he passed away, fifty years.

    To this union nine children were born, all of whom live near Morning Sun, with the exception of Dr. Oliver E. Baird of Blanchard, Iowa. All the children are living with the exception of Otto C. Baird, who passed away in 1910. The remaining children are: Mrs. Minnie L. Carithers, Edmund A., Merrill W., Oliver E., Ralph E., Oscar M., Mrs. Lena May Robertson and Mrs. Blanche U. Thompson.

    Early in life he joined the Sharon Reformed Presbyterian church where, in after years, he served faithfully as deacon, and to the end of his life he was treasurer until failing health made it impossible, Mr. Baird was to be found regularly at the church he loved on the Sabbath day.

    Those who were bending over him in his last moments caught his last words "The Almighty has power."

    Funeral services were conducted at Sharon church and he was buried at Sharon cemetery, Saturday, September 29, 1923.

    BIOGRAPHICAL REVIEW OF DES MOINES COUNTY, IOWA. PUBLISHED IN 1905

    James Wallace Baird has since the fall of 1873 made his home on Section 10, Yellow Springs township, where he has an excellent farm of one hundred acres of land that is rich and arable, bringing him good harvests annually. He is a native son of Iowa, and possesses the enterprising spirit which has been the dominant factor in the growth and development of the State. His birth occurred in Louisa county, Sept. 18, 1847, and he is a son of John and Catherine (McElhinney) Baird, both of whom were natives of County Derry, Ireland. The mother was only three years old when brought by her parents to America. She was born Aug. 10, 1822, and died April 14, 1900. John Baird, however, was reared and educated in his native country, and was a young man of twenty-four years when he decided to seek a home in the New World. He accordingly crossed the Atlantic, and for a few years remained a resident of Philadelphia, Pa., where he worked as a laborer. In March, 1840, he was married in that city to Miss McElhinney, and about May 1, 1840, came direct to Iowa, where they lived until called to their final rest. For a brief period they remained in Louisa county, but during the infancy of their son James, came to Des Moines county. About 1848 the father entered a tract of land of eighty acres, but later sold that property and entered another eighty-acre tract on Section 4. His wife also bought an eighty-acre tract, and upon that farm they made their home. Not a furrow had been turned nor an improvement made when the land came into the possession of the father, but with characteristic energy he began its development, and as the years went by his fields became productive and his labors profitable. The old home place is now owned by the youngest son, J. P. Baird. There are twelve children in the family; Robert, now deceased; John L., who is living in Centerville, Iowa; Samuel C., who died in Nebraska in 1904; James W.; Nancy Jane, the wife of Daniel Yohe, of Nebraska; Margaret Ann, the wife of Adam Walkingshaw, who is living in Nebraska; Robert M., who resides in Winfield, Henry county, Iowa; Elizabeth, the wife of Robert G. Reed; Mary C., at home; Rosanna, the wife of I. R. Carithers; and Joseph W., who is living on the old homestead farm in Yellow Springs township. The father was a member of the Presbyterian church in his native country, and in 1846, in company with others he organized the Reformed Presbyterian Congregation of Sharon, in this county. He was a man of upright life, believing firmly in the Christian religion, and exemplifying his faith in his daily conduct and in all his relations with his fellow men. He died July 4, 1881, when in his seventieth year, his birth having occurred about 1812. James Wallace Baird was brought to Des Moines county during his infancy, his parents locating in Yellow Springs township. He acquired his education in the district schools of Des Moines and Louisa counties, and his boyhood days were quietly passed in the usual manner of farm lads of the period. Having arrived at years of maturity, he was married, April 7, 1871, to Miss Mary Ann Walkinshaw, a daughter of John and Margaret (Glasgow) Walkingshaw. Mrs. Baird was born in Guernsey county, Ohio, March 19, 1851, and by her marriage has become the mother of nine children, namely; Minnie Loretta, the wife of J. T. Carithers, who is living in Yellow Springs township; Edmond Alfonz; Lena Mabel, the wife of John P. Robertson, who is living on the William Hensleigh farm, in Yellow Springs township; Merrill Waldo, who attended the business college at Quincy, Ill.; Oliver Emmet; Otto Clarence; Ralph Ehrman; Oscar Marion; and Blanch Verona, all at home, the last two being twins. It was in the fall of 1874 that Mr. Baird purchased his present farm, taking up his abode thereon. He has made good improvements here since, including the erection of a fine barn and other buildings. The farm comprises one hundred acres of land, and is all under cultivation, the fields returning excellent crops of corn, wheat, and other cereals. Mr. Baird is also well known as a stock-dealer, and usually raises several head of horses each year, at the present time having seventeen head, principally draft horses. He also has some good cattle upon his place, and about forty head of Poland China hogs ready for the market. He is a busy man, and indolence and idleness are utterly foreign to his nature. As the years have passed he has worked persistently and energetically, and that he is now in possession of a comfortable home is attributable entirely to his own labors and God’s blessing.

    Mrs. Mary Ann Baird Dies Sunday

    Mrs. Mary Ann Baird, 97, the town's eldest citizen, died at midnight Sunday (November 21, 1948) at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Minnie Carithers. She had been in declining health for several weeks.

    Mary Ann Walkinshaw was the daughter of John and Margaret Glasgow Walkinshaw, and was born March 19, 1851, at Londonderry, Ohio. On April 7, 1871, she was married to James W. Baird, and for many years they lived on a farm in the Sharon community. Baird died in 1928 and in 1927 Mrs. Baird came to Morning Sun to make her home with her daughter.

    In addition to Mrs. Carithers, Mrs. Baird is survived by six other children: Mrs. J. P Robertson and Merrill Baird, Morning Sun; Ralph and Oscar Baird, Wapello; Dr. Oliver Baird, Tarkio, Missouri; and Mrs. L. L. Myers of Ontario, California. Two sons, Otto and Edward Baird, are dead.

    Also surviving are 34 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren.

    Mrs. Baird was a member of the Sharon Reformed Presbyterian church, at which church services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. Reverend M. W. Doughterty was in charge, and burial was in Sharon cemetery.

    Mrs. Catharine McElhinney-Baird was born near Londonderry, Ireland, August 10th, 1822. She departed this life April 14th, 1900.

    When about 3 years old she came with her parents to the United States, and after residing a series of years In Pennsylvania and New York; emigrated to Iowa, with the rest of the family, where they arrived April 15, 1840.

    She lacked a single day of having lived in [outside?] the state 60 years.

    She was married to John Baird in Philadelphia, March 12, 1840. Mr. Baird's death occurred on July 4th, 1881, so that she lived in widowhood almost 19 years.

    She was in the truest sense of the word a mother. Five sons and six daughters live to mourn her death. One child died in early life.

    Her grandchildren number 29, and her great-grandchildren, 3. She was eminently practical in all her life work. "She managed her affairs with discretion."

    She loved her church devoutly, and understood the principles upon which It stood. She attended church when it cost her much effort, and when she felt unable to go any other place. During her last illness, her mind was unusually clear; her anticipation of the approaching end was with a quiet faith, a comfortable hope, a well grounded assurance. In herself she saw nothing on which to depend. In Jesus Christ she saw all that her soul desired. Her end came painlessly and peacefully, like the light of the morning-star that does not set but melts away into the clearer light of the eternal day. "Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright for the end of that man is peace."

    The funeral was attended by a vast concourse of people and among the mourners were a large number of early settlers. We note year by year how their number is being diminished. The emigrants are again emigrating -- this time to a land where infirmities of age, and sickness, and sorrow, and separation are words unknown.

    May their posterity be as true to the right and as loyal to duty as the fathers and mothers were. "Show thy work unto thy servants, and thy glory unto their children."
