938 The Morning Sun News-Herald

Mrs. Catharine McElhinney-Baird was born near Londonderry, Ireland, August 10th, 1822. She departed this life April 14th, 1900.

When about 3 years old she came with her parents to the United States, and after residing a series of years In Pennsylvania and New York; emigrated to Iowa, with the rest of the family, where they arrived April 15, 1840.

She lacked a single day of having lived in [outside?] the state 60 years.

She was married to John Baird in Philadelphia, March 12, 1840. Mr. Baird's death occurred on July 4th, 1881, so that she lived in widowhood almost 19 years.

She was in the truest sense of the word a mother. Five sons and six daughters live to mourn her death. One child died in early life.

Her grandchildren number 29, and her great-grandchildren, 3. She was eminently practical in all her life work. "She managed her affairs with discretion."

She loved her church devoutly, and understood the principles upon which It stood. She attended church when it cost her much effort, and when she felt unable to go any other place. During her last illness, her mind was unusually clear; her anticipation of the approaching end was with a quiet faith, a comfortable hope, a well grounded assurance. In herself she saw nothing on which to depend. In Jesus Christ she saw all that her soul desired. Her end came painlessly and peacefully, like the light of the morning-star that does not set but melts away into the clearer light of the eternal day. "Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright for the end of that man is peace."

The funeral was attended by a vast concourse of people and among the mourners were a large number of early settlers. We note year by year how their number is being diminished. The emigrants are again emigrating -- this time to a land where infirmities of age, and sickness, and sorrow, and separation are words unknown.

May their posterity be as true to the right and as loyal to duty as the fathers and mothers were. "Show thy work unto thy servants, and thy glory unto their children."
McElhinney, Catherine (I197)

941 The Sleep of Death
Asphyxiation of Laurence Tee, Kingston Groceryman
Left the gas turned on at the McCutchen house Saturday morning, in a tightly closed room and went to bed – found Saturday evening – a shocking case.
Lawrence Tee, a farmer and country groceryman residing about a half mile west of Kingston, drove into Burlington for the last time Friday afternoon. How he spent the evening is not known, but about one o’clock Saturday morning he went to the McCutcheon house and secured lodging for himself and team. He was slightly intoxicated, and when he went to his room the clerk asked him if he understood how to manage the gas. He said he did. He locked the door of his room and put the key on the dresser. It is supposed that he turned the gas on and was either without matches or unable to find the gas fixture readily and concluded to undress without a light, which he did and went to bed. The transom was closed tightly and the room held the gas so effectually that the situation was not discovered until Saturday evening about 6 o’clock, the hotel clerk supposing that Mr. Tee was very weary and would prefer to sleep. Supper-time arriving, however, it was thought best to arouse him. Repeated knocking on the door brought no response and the transom was broken open. The gas then rushed out and revealed the cause of the sleeper’s prolonged rest. It was the rest of death. The body was rigid, showing that life had been extinct for many hours.
The body was given in charge of Coroner Fred Unterkircher, who held an inquest this morning and the jury ascribed the death to accidental asphyxiation. On the dead person was found $80 in money and a gold watch. One pocket of his coat was bull of broken cigars.
Deceased was about 50 years of age and a well preserved strong man. He was highly respected by his neighbors, and his sad death has shocked everyone in the vicinity of Kingston, where he was well know. He leaves a widow and several married children.

Wapello, Ia. July 10. - Cora, one of the twin children of Mr. and Mrs Jos. Schmeiser, residing west of Wapello, was trampled to death by a horse on Sunday morning. The father arose earlier than the rest of the family and went to the pasture to drive the horse into the barnyard and the little girl followed him. Coming in with the horse, the father saw the child and called for her to leave by another gate. But she was too late, and the horses surrounded her and she was stepped on by one of them. Doctors from Wapello were summoned, but the child only died about thirty minutes after the accident. She was about three and one-half years old. The funeral was held Monday afternoon from the home. Interment in Wapello Cemetery.

District Board revokes decision.
The district board has changed the decision relative to the petitions of four men of this county, two from Mediapolis, one from Burlington and one from West Burlington. These men had been exempted by the district board on vocational grounds, but now they have been accepted for military service, and the granting of exemption upon an appeal to the president is the only chance they have of escaping military service in the new national army. They are as follows: Lawrence A. Dehner, Horace W. Kirkendall, Arthur J. Wunnenberg, Harry A. Nelson.
