| 751 | Mrs. Riemann is taken by death; rites Wednesday. Mrs. Dorothea Riemann, 93, Wapello township in Louisa county, died at the Schmeiser home near Wapello Saturday night at 8:30. She was the widow of Frederick Riemann who died in June, 1896. Surviving are a son, Fred Riemann, Sperry, and three daughters, Mrs. Fred Wunnenberg of Sperry, Mrs. Joseph Schmeiser of Wapello and Mrs. Fred Meyer of West Burlington. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren and a brother, William Bremer of Burlington. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday from the Burnett-Wapello funeral home. The Rev. R. R. Belter, pastor of Bethany Lutheran church, will conduct the service. Burial will be in St. Paul's church cemetery, Kingston. The Hawk Eye, Burlington, Iowa. | 752 | Mrs. Schmeiser Death Occurs At Wapello Home Wapello – Mrs. Christena Matilda Schmeiser, age 74, lifelong resident of Wapello, died at her home in Wapello Thursday. She was born Jan. 27, 1879, the daughter of August and Wilhelmina Boettemoeller Wehmeyer. She was married to Emanuel Schmeiser who preceded her in death several years ago. Survivors include two sons, Martin Schmeiser of Carroll, Ia., and Maurice Schmeiser of Wapello; four daughters, Mrs. Agnes Berkey, Iowa City; Mrs. Mabel Barnes, Fullerton, Calif.; Mrs. Mary Smith, Medical lake, Wash., and Mrs. Josephine Walker, state College, Penn.; one sister, Mrs. Amelia Windmeyer, Fulton, N.Y., and 11 grandchildren. The body is at the Dudgeon Funeral home where services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday. The Rev. Leonard Tinker will officiate and burial will be in the Wapello cemetery. | 753 | Mrs. Shirley Ann Taylor, 87, of Burlington died at 2:40 p.m. Sunday, August 27, 2017, at her home. Born September 10, 1929 in Mediapolis, she was the daughter of Otto and Anna (Steffener) Wunnenberg. On March 27, 1948 she married Richard Keith Taylor in Burlington. He preceded her in death on January 29, 2007. Mrs. Taylor was a graduate of Mediapolis High School and Burlington Beauty Academy. She started her career at Mademoiselles in Hotel Burlington. She later worked as a receptionist in the dentist office of Dr. Rudy Buescher and then for the urologist Dr. George Jenkins. Mrs. Taylor was a member of West Ave. Baptist Church and volunteered at Burlington Medical Center and Great River Medical Center. She was an active member of her church and served as a tutor for children. She enjoyed people. Survivors include one son, Ronald (Debra) Taylor of Shippensburg, Pennsylvania; three grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one sister, Lucille Bonar of Morning Sun and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister and one brother. The graveside memorial funeral service and internment for Mrs. Taylor will be 2 p.m. Friday, September 1st in Kossuth Cemetery, rural Mediapolis. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. | 754 | Mrs. Vera Urban Belfry – Mrs. Veran Isabelle Urban, 69, died Tuesday at Carbon County Memorial Hospital in Red Lodge from natural causes. She was born Oct. 7, 1910, in Red Lodge, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Anderson. On Dec. 29, 1946, she was married to John Urban in Billings. They made their home in California; Lander, Wyo., and Billings Before moving to Belfry three years ago. She is survived by the widower; three sons, John and Robert, Billings, and Jim, Portland, Ore.; the father, George Anderson, Redwood City, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Silvia Nelson, Jackson, Wyo.; and seven grandchildren. Requiem mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Agness Catholic Church in Red Lodge. The Rev. J.L. Galour will officiate. | 755 | Mrs. Viola Poisel Mrs. Viola Lorraine Poisel, of 1505 Corse, died 16 minutes after being admitted to Mercy hospital shortly before noon Thursday. Death was apparently due to a stroke. Rev. John M. Schull pastor of Zion United Church of Christ will conduct last rites at Prugh’s chapel at 10:30 Saturday. Burial will be in Aspen Grove cemetery. A native of Des Moines county, Mrs. Poisel was born Jan. 29, 1896, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Malchow. She was married to Mr. Albert J. Poisel in Monmouth, Ill., on Nov. 28, 1936. Mr. Poisel died Feb. 24, 1963. Mrs. Poisel had been a resident of Burlington for 29 years. She is survived by a son, Charles A. | 756 | Mrs. W. Dwinell dies suddenly of pneumonia Columbus Junction – Mrs. S. A. Dwinell was called to Burlington Thursday by the serious illness of her daughter-in-law, Mrs. William Dwinell of Morning Sun, who was taken ill with pneumonia Thursday morning and died at 1:20 in the afternoon in the Burlington hospital. William Dwinell is on the USS Wright which is now at Honolulu and was sent a cablegram informing him of his wife’s death. Mrs. Dwinell was formerly Miss Clarice Wunnenberg of Morning Sun, and she and William Dwinell were married last summer when Mr. Dwinell was hone on furlough to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Funeral services have been set for 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 7 at the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant, with the Rev. Dr. Edward Petersen officiating. Burial will be in the Trinity Cemetery, north of New London. Visitation will begin at Noon Wednesday at the Beatty Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. in the evening. There will be a prayer service at the funeral home at 7 p.m. Wednesday evening. Myrtle was born April 3, 1907 near Winfield, IA, the daughter of William and Mary Elizabeth (Gilyeart) Schenk. She graduated from High School and was united in marriage to Lloyd Edward Jones September 30, 1924 at her parent’s home near Mt. Union. He receded her in death October 17, 1984. She later married Harry Hazen April 8, 1989 at the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant. He preceded her in death march 5, 1994. Survivors include children, Doris Husted of South Sioux City, NE, Mary Lou Roberts and husband Tom of Powersville, MO, Dale Hazen and wife Betty of Yarmouth, IA, and Helen Garrels and husband Irvin of Danville, IA; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Born July 10, 1922, in Sperry, she was the daughter of Fred H. and Laura L. Hahn Wiegard. On February 6, 1942, she married Russel Henry Wunnenberg in Kahoka, Missouri. He died May 4, 1990. Mrs. Wunnenberg was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Dodgeville. Survivors include one daughter, Leona Ruth Wunnenberg of Jackson, Wyoming. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one brother. There will be no visitation. The body has been cremated. Thursday afternoon a party living two miles north of Kingston drove into the city and proceeded direct to the county clerk’s office. “Square.” said one of the party, names Fred Riemann, “we’ve come here t’ get hitched up, me and Ida Hinson. This is her maw an’ sister and the boy is a friend of mine named Rice.” If there is anything that pleases Clerk Lange, it is a wedding, and he bestirred himself to make the occasion one of comfort, joy and happiness to the members of the party. While the license was being drawn up in due form, the prospective groom, a medium sized thin faced young man of twenty-five, with hair long enough to braid, recited his family history to the entertainment of the fast gathering crowd. Max Hirsch was present and gallantly offered to hunt up a knot-splicer. He went out and soon returned with ‘Squire Riepe. While Hirsch was absent the bride, in the most innocent manner, stood out in the rotunda and combed her bangs. Just as the Squire came up the stairs, the bride’s mother carefully and reverently unwound several fathoms of store twine from a band-box and took therefrom a wreath of artificial orange blossoms and a white veil which were fastened to the bride’s hair. Then bunches of white flowers were attached to the groom’s coat, they lined up and the ceremony began. As soon as the ceremony was concluded the wreath, veil and bunches of blowers were removed from bride and groom and reverently replaced in the band box, which the bride’s mother again took under her protection and the procession, led by Max Hirsch and the groom, started for ‘Squire Riepe’s office where a beautiful marriage certificate, with a green border and an intricate net-work of yellow and blue lilies crowned by a picture of a wedding party, was filled out and signed. “We’ve got fourteen miles of muddy roads before we get back t’ the farm, but durn me if I’m a carin’ if it was two miles or two hundred,” said the groom as he gazed affectionately at his wife. | 783 | Obit from Find a Grave Clifford W. Hinson, 91, of Kingston, died at home. He was born to James E. and Elizabeth Dravis Hinson. On April 11, 1942, he married Helen L. Ertz at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Burlington. She died December 12, 2005. Mr. Hinson was a farmer. He had also worked at J.I. Case Company for 14 years, retiring in 1982. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific for three years. He was a member of SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church in West Burlington, Knights of Columbus #568, U.A.W. Local #807, and the Mediapolis American Legion. In his early years he was a semi-pro baseball player. He was an avid bowler, loved nature, and he especially loved his farm and family. Survivors include sons, Michael (Connie) and Robert, both of Kingston, and John (Meredith) of Mediapolis; daughter, Sandra (Dr. Stephen) Massick of Fon Du Lac, Wisconsin; eleven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister, and one infant son, Stevan. The Mass of the Resurrection was held at SS. Mary & Patrick Catholic Church, West Burlington, with the Rev. Father Dennis Martin (his nephew) as the celebrant and Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf as the concelebrant. Music was provided by the De Moines County Resurrection Choir. Internment with full military honors by the Veterans Honor Guard, VFW Posts 10102,9162 American Legion Post 52, Hamilton-Walters Marine Corps League, and AMVETS Post 29 followed. | Hinson, Clifford W. | 784 | Obituary (Communicated) Mr. Isaac Walker died at his home in Benton township, Saturday evening, December 23, 1899. He was born in Virginia April 28, 1830, and came to Iowa in 1841, settling in Des Moines county, where he had resided ever since with the exception of three or four years in Missouri. He was married April 1, 1855, to Miss Hannah K. Friend. To this union eleven children were born nine of which still survive him and were all present at the funeral except one daughter, Mrs. Mary Kastor, who resides at Allerton, Iowa. The children are all married except the two youngest daughters, who are still at home with their mother. About fifty years ago Mr. Walker joined the United Brethren church. He changed his relationship about thirty years ago and became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church at Tamatown. He had filled most all of the official positions of the church and was class leader and trustee at the time of his death. He possessed a true Christian character and during his long sickness, which caused intense suffering he was never heard to complain. Mr. Walker was a loving husband and father and will be sadly missed in the home, in the church and in the community in which he lived. The funeral services were conducted December 25, 1899, by Rev. Services are 2:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline. Visitation is one hour prior to the services. Private burial will take place at Rock Island National Cemetery. The former Marlis Ann Martinson was born July 15, 1919, in Decorah, Iowa, the daughter of Adolph and Gertrude (Steine) Martinson. She married Ralph W. Bremer on December 13, 1941, in Rock Hill, Missouri. He died April 27, 1997. Marlis and her husband owned and operated many restaurants for over 40 years, most notably Bremer’s White Spot Restaurant in Rock Island. Marlis is survived by many nieces and nephews and their families, who were very dear to her heart. She was preceded in death by her husband and three sisters. She had many dear neighbor friends from Moline who visited her faithfully. She cherished their friendships. We will all miss her greatly. Born January 11, 1932, in Des Moines County, she was the daughter of George W. and Alta Benkert Riemann. On July 15, 1950, she married Elmer Charles Springsteen in Des Moines County. Dorothy had worked as a secretary for several businesses in Burlington including Sylvania and Burlington Hospital. She also had held the position as the first ward clerk for the Burlington Hospital. She was a 1950 graduate of Huron High School. She was of the Methodist faith. She took pride in being a good wife, mother, and grandma. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren and always had an ice cream cone or homemade oatmeal cookies ready for them with they visited. Some of Dorothy's hobbies were putting puzzles together, working outside with her flowers and reading. She especially enjoyed loving and caring for her pet birds, Teddy and Peaches. Survivors include her husband,one son, two daughters, five grandchildren, five sisters, and one brother, and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Hagele and Honts Funeral Home, Mediapolis.
