874 Mary Ann Hempleman Whiteley
Mary Ann Hempleman Whiteley, daughter of George Hempleman the Second and Ruth Howell Hempleman, was born October 22, 1821, on the old Hempleman homestead west of South Charleston, Clarke County, Ohio. She married Joseph Whiteley in 1840, and they together moved on a farm six miles east of Springfield, Clarke County, Ohio, and there lived until she died, January 21, 1888.
Mary Ann Hempleman Whiteley bore all the strong traits of the Hempleman family, loved and respected by all those who knew her. She was kind to every one, stage, station or age made no difference to her. Every person was made welcome that entered her home, and many were the bountiful repast that were served by her to her friends. She was a true Christian, a true and loving wife and a devoted mother, kind to a fault but stern in her decision when she knew she was right. Her greatest aim and desire was to see her children be manly men and womanly women, and the writer believes that her greatest desire was fulfilled.
Joseph Whiteley was born January 18, 1818, on the farm six miles east of Springfield, Clarke County, Ohio, and after his marriage moved on to the same farm on which he was born, and there lived for many years until he moved to Darke County, Ohio. After the death of his wife he lived with his daughter, Mrs. Nancy J. Naugle, until his death, January 30, 1902. Joseph Whiteley was a man of good judgment and the people of his township elected him justice of the peace and he held this office for 12 years. During the Civil War he took great interest in his country’s affairs, looking after the widows and orphan, made so by the cruel war. He went several times to the front to look after the needs of the soldiers, and was always ready with his time and money to help them, for in this war he had two sons, Clay and Clark. Twice during that war he went to the front to look after the soldiers of Clarke County. On one of these occasions he brought back his nephew John Whiteley, who had typhoid fever. Many were the soldiers that received assistance through him.
To Joseph and Mary Ann Hempleman Whiteley, were born twelve children, as follows: Ruth, Clark, Clay, Alice, George, John, Scott, Mary Ann, Nancy Jane, Charles, Florence and Joseph, Jr.

Cory, St. Pauls Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jenera and currently of the First Lutheran Church in Findlay where she was a member of the Martha Circle. She earned her Bachelors Degree and later her Masters Degree from Bowling Green State University in 1969. The Findlay team she coached for five years lost only one game, to then-Bluffton College where she became a health and physical education instructor and women’s basketball, volleyball and tennis coach in 1967. She retired from teaching in 1974 and, two years later, began playing competitive shuffleboard with her husband Eldon Schafer in North Fort Myers, Fla., until his death in 1984. In 1990, she married Jim Clayton and they became active in national and international level shuffleboard, serving as team captains for seven years on the U.S.A. team. 895 Morris’ Fate Still Mystery
The fate of Robert D. Morris, 843 Boston Place, who disappeared from his home here early last week and whose automobile was later found abandoned near Balboa, was still an unsolved mystery here today.
Neither Constable Alex R. Chambers nor the local police department had been able to obtain any further trace of him, and Constable Chambers today expressed the opinion that he had possibly committed suicide, as his car abandoned on the beach at Balboa indicated.
Morris is said to have disappeared for short periods before, returning home after being away for a few days. When he disappeared last week, he was at first believed to have gone away as in the past just for a short time, but when his automobile was found at Balboa a search was begun.
He is not known to have any reason for disappearing and was not in trouble. However, according to person intimate with him, he had acted queerly for some time. He was a contractor here – in business for himself.
Mrs. Orpha Morris, his wife, is prominent socially here, holding important offices with various local social organizations.
The disappearance of Mr. Morris had been kept secret by officers until the news was published in The Progress on Saturday.

898 Mr. Bradley located where he now resides at once after his marriage in the autumn of 1859. There were but few improvements on the place at that time, and he has made the farm what it is today by skillful and untiring labor, working systematically, carrying out every detail carefully and employing none but the best methods in cultivating the soil and in managing his affairs generally. He has 170 acres in his homestead, beside 87 acres elsewhere in the township. The buildings are substantial and well arranged and everything about the place is indicative of the thrift, business energy and practical ability of its owner. He devotes it to general farming and has it well stocked with fine horses, cattle and hogs.

Our subject was married to Miss Surrila, daughter of David and Sarah (Weaver) Morris in November, 1859. She, too, is a native of Monroe Township, born here June 24, 1839 and here she has passed her life thus far. Her marriage with our subject has brought them four sons and three daughters, of whom these four are living and complete their pleasant home circle: Lorenzo T, Stella M., M. Viola, and D. Cushman. Three of their children have passed to life beyond: DeWitt C who died at the age of 25 yrs; Lydia who was 20 at the time of her death, and Morris who died in infancy.
