Their land was heavily timbered, so "they cleared and drained the land and made a very productive farm of it. William Schafer held an elected township or county office almost from the date of his residence in that part of the county. The village of North Creek which was platted in 1879, was partly located on his farm."

Palmer Township
WILLIAM SCHAFER – whose parents, Philip and Mary E. (Almanritter) Schafer, settled in the county in 1854, was born in Germany, February 4, 1839. His wife, Mary, daughter of Henry and Margaret (Weaver) Morris, was born in this county, August 5, 1845, and they were married in Allen county, Ohio, August 6, 1863. They have eight children: Philip H., born September 11, 1864; John S., February 18, 1866; Margaret C., September 19, 1867; William W., September 26, 1871; George L., December 12, 1874; Charles C., September 26, 1876; Sarah E., August 22, 1877; and Mary E., June 17, 1879. He has been justice of the peace of this township for fourteen years; he is one of the present county commissioners, which office he has filled since 1875, and is the postmaster of North Creek. His father-in-law, Mr. Henry Morris, was an old pioneer settler, was one of the first associate judges of the county, and died January 8, 1877. Occupation, farming.
