      From Decatur Illinois Herald & Review 11/29/1927

      Hamilton Morris a long time resident of DeWitt county where he followed the occupation of farming for several year died Monday at his home ,his demise being due to complications of old age. Not withstanding that he has been taking treatment for his condition for a period of four weeks, his death came as a shock to both is family and his friends.

      He was born March 18, 1844 near Piattsburg, Ohio, the tenth child of Joseph and Levina Drake Morris [death certificate below has parents: James Morris and Martha Henry]. His childhood was spent on the farm and a log cabin was his home. At the age of 17 in Aug.1861 he volunteered for service in the Union army and was assigned to the 31st Ohio Company K, volunteer infantry, army of the Cumberland. He was in most of the battles of his regiment including Ressacca, Lookout Mountain and the Seige of Atlanta, and Sherman's march to the sea. After being mustered out in July 1865 he moved to Illinois.

      He was married to Araminia Dement in 1867 and to this union were born 10 children. In may 1888 occurred the death of his wife and in 1891 he again married to Miss Elizabeth Tobias in Kenny. He leaves besides his widow the following children, Homer D. of Lincoln, Neb., Reddick of Blunt, S. D., Mrs. A. J. Schoby of S. Gate, Cal., Mrs. C.I Fort of Clinton, Harris of Springfield, Charley, Asa and Murray of Decatur. Two children died in infancy. He leaves 26 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

      Practically his entire life was spent in farming in DeWitt county except for the time he spent in the livery business and federal service being appointed to the first rural route in Macon county authorized by the department. This was route one out of Maroa and he received for his services the first year $400 and was required to keep four horses. The salary however has steadily increased until the time he retired in 1912 he was receiving $1,200 a years. For the past seven years he has been making his home on Monroe street.

      Funeral service will be Wednesday in the First Methodist Episcopal church and burial will be in Leana cemetery, Chestnut, Illinois
