| 301 | Benjamin F. DeWitt Benjamin F. DeWitt, 86 years old, died at the home of his son, Newton, DeWitt, 119 East Walnut street, at 12:30 o’clock Thursday morning. He had been bedfast for the past year. Mr. DeWitt was born near Beaman, Mo., October 4, 1863, the son of the late Benjamin and Pernelia Potter DeWitt. He has lived all his life in Pettis county, residing on a farm until 1919, when he came to Sedalia to make his home. Mr. DeWitt was married in August, 1899, to Miss Delia Fay Ross. Five children were born to this union, tow of whom, Frank DeWitt and John DeWitt, died in infancy. Mrs. DeWitt preceded him in death in March 1912. Surviving are two sons, Newton DeWitt and Lee DeWitt, Sedalia; one daughter, Mrs. Paul W. Bennett, Vandalia, Mo.; one sister, Mrs. Cevia McMullin, Beaman, Mo. Funeral services will be held at the Lamine Baptist church at 2:30 o’clock Friday afternoon. Rev. Walter P. Arnold, pastor of the East Sedalia Baptist church will officiate. He is survived by his wife, Marion Petero of Modesto; children, Dale Petero and Jack Petero, both of Modesto, Wayne Petero of Montana, Ed Petero of Oakdale, Logan Petero of Salida and Darlene Weimer of Iowa; and 18 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. | 303 | Benjamin R. Weidner, 76, Delphi rural route 1, died Thursday at St Elizabeth Hospital, Lafayette, after a three-month illness. Born March 24, 1888 in Illinois he was the son of Michael and Christina Wetland Weidner. He was married September 30, 1924, to Effie J. Boyce, who survives. A Yeoman barber, be was formerly owner of Ben’s Tavern in Delphi He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, the Yeoman Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge in Illinois and the Knights of Pythias He was a 32nd degree Mason. He was a member of the Delphi community for 25 years. Surviving with the wife are a daughter, Mrs. Harry Clark, Freeport, N. Y.; two grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. Services were held Sunday at the Cornell Funeral Home with Rev. William Moon officiating. Burial was made in Yeoman Cemetery. | 305 | Bernice Sparks Porter April 26 , 1926 - February 8, 2020 Bernice Sparks Porter, 93 of Olathe, KS, widow of Melvin "Pete" Porter, Sr., passed away on February 8, 2020 in Olathe, KS after suffering a stroke. She was born on April 26, 1926 in Fleming County, the daughter of William and Clarice Sparks. Bernice was a graduate of Fleming County High School. After graduation, she began a career at the RECC (now Touchstone Energy) and worked there for 54 years until she retired as the head bookkeeper at the age of 72. Though Bernice loved to work, she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren even more. She is preceded in death by her parents, William and Clarice Sparks and her siblings; Edith Mineer (William), Elwood Sparks (Ruby & Mitchell), Virginia Lowe Schwartz (Virgil & Paul), Clyde Sparks (Georgia), ad Christine Harmon (Kenny). She is survived by her sons, Melvin Porter Jr. (Darlene) and David Porter (Laura) and her grandchildren, Zach (Amelia), Gabriel, Jack, Levi, Lucy, Will and Violet. | 306 | Bert A. Hedges Taken by Death Insurance Executive Ill for Two Years Bert A. Hedges, 59, of 164 South Fountain, nationally known as an insurance executive, died Monday morning at Wesley hospital. He had been in failing health for the last two years but his condition had been critical for the last month. In addition to insurance groups, he was active in many civic organizations, including the local UNESCO. Because of his work in the development of the latter organization, he was named an honorary citizen of Orleans, France, Wichita sister city under the UNESCO plan. He was Kansas chairman of UNESCO. Hedges had been a resident of Wichita 20 year. Taught School A graduate of the University of Illinois in 1916, he served as a public school teacher and superintendent in Illinois before entering the life insurance business. He was a national president of the American War Dads, a post commander of the American Legion and president of both the Wichita Lions club and the University club. He formed the Kansas Association of Accident and Health underwriters and served as its first president in 1940. Among insurance activities he was a member of the executive board of the International Association of Accident and Health underwriters and national chairman of the general agents and managers committee of the National Association of Life underwriters. He also served as chairman of numerous national committees in these organizations. Wrote Two Books Hedges was the author of two books, “Selling Accident and Health Insurance” and “Let’s Sell Life Insurance. In 1952 he was named winner of the Harold R. Gordon memorial award, presented by the Chicago Accident and Health association at Asbury Park, N.J. This award is the “Oscar” of the insurance business. He entered the insurance business at Champaign, Ill. He later served as general agent at Decatur, Ill., and then was associated with his brother, Herbert, in the insurance business in Kansas City. He was appointed director of field services and sale training in the home office of the Business Men’s Assurance company in 1929. In 1932 he was named branch manager for the firm in Kansas, Northern Oklahoma and Southern Nebraska, with headquarters in Wichita. Developed Business Beginning with only three or four salesmen, he developed a force of 45 agents. Hedges at one time was president of the Soldiers Home board of managers for the state of Kansas. He was with the U.S. marines during World War I, serving overseas. He had always planned to visit Orleans, France, of which he was an honorary citizen, but never got to make the trip. One of this twin daughters, Edith, visited Orleans, officiating at the presentation of the train provided children of the French city by the children of Wichita. Born in Nebraska Hedges was a member of the Plymouth Congregational church. He was born Dec. 2, 1893, in Ansley, Neb. Surviving are his wife, Edith, of the home; a son, Robert, of Champaign, Ill; three daughters, Mrs. Virginia Aldendifer of Indianapolis, Ind., Mrs. Elaine Stevens of Detroit, Mich., and Edith Hedges of Pittsburgh, Pa. He also is survived by his father, T.A. Hedges of South Haven, Kan.; three brothers and two sisters. One of the brothers, Arthur Hedges, lives at 1618 Fairmount. Memorial services will be held at Plymouth Congregational church, probably Thursday afternoon. The family requests that friends send contributions to the cancer fund. | 307 | Bert Fredrick Gilkison Middletown, Ind. – Bert Fredrick Gilkison, 87, died Saturday in Miller’s Merry Manor. He was the brother of Maude Ferguson of Muncie. Mr. Gilkison was born near Morehead, Ky., and had lived earlier in the Portland, Ridgeville and Bryant areas. He was retired from farming and had also worked for Chrysler Corp. and Chevrolet. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Portland. Survivors include three sons, a daughter, 17 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. | 308 | Bertha Florence Bretz Black November 18, 1924 - July 31, 2016 Bertha Florence Bretz Black, 91, of Maysville, passed away at her residence on Sunday, July 31, 2016. She was the widow of Harry Ward Black. Born in Lewis County on November 18, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Harvey Bretz and the late Jeanette Thompson Bretz. Bertha was a loving wife, grandmother, sister and homemaker. For 9 years she worked for U. S. Shoe Factory in Flemingsburg. She was a member of the Mount Carmel Christian Church. Besides her parents and Harry, her husband of 72 years, she was preceded in death by her brother, Harry Douglas Bretz; and a sister, Emma Bloomfield. Survivors include her daughter, June (Dave) Grayson; grandsons, Shane Grayson and Izzy Grayson; four great grandchildren; brother, Elmer Bretz; and a brother-in-law, Clyde Black. He was an employe of the White Eagle division of Socony Vacuum in Augusta for the past 11 years. He was born at Benedict, Kan., June 16, 1913, and moved to El Dorado with his parents in 1915. Betty was born the daughter of Nolan T. and Helen (Peavler) Cassity on October 25, 1936, in Brookfield, Missouri. She was a 1954 graduate of Brookfield High School. She was united in marriage to Vernon E. Prewitt on November 21, 1954, in Brookfield, Missouri. He preceded her in death on January 17, 2000. Betty worked as a supervisor for Hope Haven Industries in Chillicothe, Missouri, for 25 years. After her retirement, she worked at Skillpath in Chillicothe, Missouri, for 9 years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Chillicothe, Missouri, where she volunteered. She was also a member of the Bizzy Belles Extension Club. Betty was a Regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution for 6 years. She enjoyed genealogy, reading, and spending time with her family. Survivors include two sons, James V. Prewitt and wife Patti of Navasota, Texas, and John E. Prewitt of Chillicothe, Illinois; two daughters, Sondra Skipper and husband Larry of Chillicothe, Missouri, and Suzanne Greenwood of Chillicothe, Missouri; nine grandchildren, Adam Rice, Nathaniel Skipper, Tyler Skipper and wife Jessica, Taylor, Jackson, and Carson Prewitt, Emily Prewitt and husband Doug Johnson, Ethan Prewitt, and Molly Prewitt; one great grandchild, Anaya Rice; and several nieces and nephews. She was a writer for The Squire magazine and Rose Publication, and also taught creative writing at the Jewish Community Center. Mrs. Bramson was a member of Village Presbyterian Church. She attended Kansas State University, Manhattan, and the University of Minnesota. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi, a charter member of Cub Scout Pack 92, a den mother chairman, and was on the boards of the Tomahawk Players and the Community Children’s Theater. She was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and had lived in this area most of her life. She leaves her husband, Edwin M. She is survived by a son, Kenneth (Sandy) Lamb of Louisville; a daughter, Janie Ann (Mikel) Hurst of Winchester; a sister, Marjorie Chadwell of Lancaster; and granddaughters, Mary and Victoria Hurst. | 320 | Betty Jane McClanahan was born Sept. 3, 1927 in Grant County, Kentucky and passed away May 12, 2021 in Williamstown, Kentucky at the age of 93. She was the daughter of the late Lemuel Riley and Mary Elizabeth Jones McClanahan. Betty was a retired secretary with Grant County Health Department after 30+ years. She was a graduate of Dry Ridge High School and a member of Dry Ridge Christian Church. She was an avid reader. She will be remembered by her family as a "surrogate mom" to all of her nieces and nephews and anyone she came to know. Aunt B, as she is lovingly known by family, is survived by 12 nieces and nephews: Sandra Lillard, Kenny McClanahan, Jimmy McClanahan, Judy Connor, Rita Tew, Phillip McClanahan, Roy Martin, Bill Martin, Dianne Mulberry, Dennis McClanahan, Donna McClanahan and Deana Chandler; 25 great nieces and nephews; and 42 great great nieces and nephews. Aunt B was 1 of 10 children born to Lemuel and Mary Elizabeth. | 321 | Betty Jane Page Rushville, Mo. – Betty Jane Page, 55, died Wednesday night at her home near Rushville of an apparent heart attack. A lifelong resident of Northwest Missouri, Mrs. Page was a former employee of Ramsay’s Department Store at Atchison, Kan., Bell Telephone Co., and most recently the Rushville State Bank, where she retired in 1978 after 19 years of service. Her memberships included the Sugar Creek Christian Church, North Platte Extension Club, and the Levonia Chapter No.85 OES at De Kalb, Mo., where she was past matron. She was also an officer in the St. Joseph Diabetes Association. She is survived by her husband, Jesse Lee page of the home; one son, J.W. Page, Lee’s Summit, Mo.; her mother, Lydia M. Gilkison, Atchison; one sister, Lydia Willis, Bean Lake, Mo., and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Sawin-Dyer chapel in Atchison. | 322 | Betty Jean Harris McKee of Flemingsburg passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, June 15, 2019. Born in Sharkey in Rowan County on May 16, 1940, Betty was the daughter of the late Carless Duey and Olive Mae Gregory Harris. She was a member of the Little Mary Regular Baptist Church, the co-owner of The Depot Restaurant in Flemingsburg, and had worked as a cook for Licking Valley CAP for twenty years. As a hard working mother, Betty settled in Flemingsburg with her four children and always put the needs of her children before her own. She is survived by her four children: Larry Ray (Betty Morrison) Caudill of Flemingsburg, Rhonda Kay Caudill (Scott) Henson of Otto, NC, Lora Fay Caudill (David) Lee of Wallingford, and James David (Donna) Caudill of Ewing. Her grandchildren are Cheryl Davis, Chandler Caudill, Jessica Lynn Henson, A.M. DeHart, Michael David Lee, Carrie Caudill, Savannah Caudill, and Waylon Caudill. Her great-grandchildren are Amber Kincaid, Gavin Kincaid, Hannah Louise Henson, Rebecca Leigh Henson, Emily Maggard, Serenity Jade Lewis, Jayden Caudill, and Matthew Troy. She leaves behind two brothers, Sammy Harris and Danny Harris; and three sisters, Shirley (Jerry) Tolliver, Mary (Harold) Stanfield, and Debbie Harris. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by six brothers, Denver, Roger, Dallas, Donnie, Bobby, and Adrian Harris. She was born at home on Oct. 31, 1925 in Catlin Township to Charles Gilkison and Clara Goldie (Eaton) Gilkison. In 1947, she married Wallace Eugene Carson. He passed away in 1991. She married Gene Berry. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents; three siblings, Richard Gilkison, Ruth Roberts and Joe Gilkison and her daughter, Carol Lynn (Carson) Taylor. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Mrs. Hedges died April 13, 1990, at the Lander Valley Medical Center. She was born Aug. 20, 1922, in Lander, the daughter of Earl and Florence (Thomas) Avery. On April 26, 1947, she married Russell Hedges at Riverton. Mrs. Hedges was a certified welder at the shipyards in Sausalito, Calif., during World War II. She also was employed as a Mountain Bell telephone operator for three years, and for 27 years worked at the Wyoming State Training School. Survivors include two daughters, Lajuana Eckard of Lander and Sharon Cooper of Riverton; two brothers, Tom Avery of Kinnear and Henry Laird Jr. of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters, Evelyn Wilt and Madge Gavin, both of Lander; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Benson Langehough Funeral Home and at church one hour prior to the funeral. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, the Revs. Craig Ellingboe and Michael Mandsager officiating. Music will be provided by Elaine Kallestad. Interment will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Willow Creek Cemetery, Royal, Iowa. Betty J. Nygaard was born Aug. 26, 1926, to Ansgar and Viola Jensen in Windom. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Spencer, Iowa, where she attended school, graduating from high school in 1944. She was a graduate of Dana College, Blair, Neb., in 1951 with additional credits from Iowa State Teachers Colleges, Ames, Iowa. She taught school for several years in Iowa and served as a Lay Missionary for one year with Home Missions of the National Lutheran Council in California and Washington. She married Gerhard J. Nygaard of Blair, Neb., on May 30, 1952. Following his graduation from Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Blair, they served a Home Mission Congregation in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. The second parish was two congregations in the Cushing-Luck, Wis., area. In 1964, they moved to Borman, N.D., where her husband became the Administrator -Chaplin of Sunset Nursing Home, then under construction. After five years there, they received a call from the Northfield Retirement Center, also under construction. Betty was certified as a Senior Laubach Tutor in 1975, and from 1978 and on, was a trained advocate with the Northfield Victim Support Program. She taught Sunday School for 40 years and was the Director of Parish Education at St. Peter's Lutheran Church from 1971 to 1980. She also conducted Vacation Church School Workshops for an Augsburg Publishing House in the Southeastern Minnesota District of the former American Lutheran Church. In 1989, the Northfield Sertoma Men and Women's Club presented to Betty the Service to Mankind Award for her community service work and the victim support program. Her entry went on to the District Level where she also received the top award. During their years in Northfield, she and her husband enjoyed trips to the Soviet Union, Ireland, the heart of Europe, and Hawaii. She is survived by her husband; four daughters, Linda of Northfield, Debra of Minneapolis, Sandra (Warren) Skura of Oakdale, and Lisa of Northfield; one brother, Dr. Bruce (Doris) Jensen of Bend, Ore.; two grandchildren; and two nieces and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents and twin daughters. Memorials may go to St. Peter's Mission Endowment Fund or to the Northfield Retirement Center Foundation. He was born in Riverton, Wyo., on Nov. 21, 1928. He was married to Bonnie Gidley on May 30, 1948, in Billings. He retired from the Bureau of Reclamation after 42 years, which included four years of Navy service. After retirement, Delbert and Bonnie RV'd extensively throughout the United States before settling in Mesa. On their travels, they made many new friends and shared the pleasures of the road together. He enjoyed spending time with his family, farming and coon hunting. | 336 | Biography from Find a Grave: Isaac was the first husband of Martha (Tipton) Cassity Price Baker (1839-1924). He married Martha on November 8, 1856 in Sullivan County, Missouri and was the father of three children with her: Henrietta, Amanda Jane and Isaac Newton Cassity, Jr. Isaac was the son of Peter Thompson Cassity, II and Lydia West (Evans) Cassity. Isaac died during his service in the Union Army during the Civil War. He enlisted in Co. B, 66th EMM (Enrolled Missouri Militia) on August 5, 1862 at Cross Roads, Missouri. His brother, Peter Thompson Cassity III, enlisted on the same day. Isaac enlisted as a 2nd musician and his brother enlisted as a private. Isaac was 30 years old and had two children at the time. His brother, was listed as being 24 at the time. (I believe his brother was actually 26). Military records say that Isaac died on November 5, 1862, although some family histories list his death as November 6th, 1862. His brother was relieved from service on November 7, 1862, probably due to the death of Isaac. Isaac and Peter's father, Sgt. Peter Thompson Cassity, II, served a few months as Sgt. in Co. C, 62nd EMM from October through December 1864. When Isaac died, his wife, Martha, was pregnant with their third child, Isaac Newton Cassity, Jr. His son was born about seven months after Isaac died. Isaac Newton Cassity, Jr. and his sisters were raised by Martha and her second husband, another Missouri Civil War veteran of the Union Army, Pvt. Harrison Price, also of Sullivan County, Missouri. Clem D Fannin had spent a lot of his years working as a fireman and engineer for the rail road. After hitting a car and killing one man he never could get over it and with the death of his first wife he quit. He was first married to a woman by the name Mary Magdalena Hunt most just called her "Lena". Her and Clem were married just about 23 years before her death in 1927. Clem and one of his sister's Ella who they called "Emma" moved back to the farm where they took care of there parents John and Elizabeth. The Fannin's grew a lot of corn and wheat and had a peach orchard and some apples. This is when he met Sylvetta 31 years her senior. After the death of his wife Sylvetta, Clem had bought a tavern in Gallipolis Ohio. Him and the two children lived in Gallipolis Ohio for a couple of years before Clem sold the Tavern. He told the kids that they were going to move to Maryland were he had got a job at a Cotton Mill. Ackland, pastor of the Baptist church, will have charge of the services at the home, and the Masonic burial rites will be said at the grave in the Cloverport cemetery. Mr. Bishoff was 61 years old. He was a Virginian by birth, and came to Kentucky in 1888. He was married May 1, 1897 to Miss Annie Elizabeth Anderson, of Owensboro, who survives with three daughters, Misses Elizabeth, Mary and Margaret Bishoff and one son, Richard Bishoff. Besides several brothers and one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Springgate, of Missouri. Mr. Bishoff started working for the L.H. & St. L. railway company in 1888 when the road was first being built and he remained in the employment of the company until his death. | 343 | BIVENS ORVILLE B., 85, died Wednesday, July 9th, after suffering a long illness. Orville was in South Miami Hospital receiving treatment when two days prior to his death, the staff surprised Orville and his wife, Lucille, with a 64th anniversary party which he immensely enjoyed. Orville, a Missouri native, was born into a pioneering aviation family that enjoyed putting on local air shows and teaching future pilots how to fly. Captain Bivens began his professional career with Pan American Airways in the days of amphibious flight and ended his 40 year career with Eastern Air Lines piloting jets. Two years ago, O.B. was proud to be selected for the F.A.I. Aviation Hall of Fame Award by his peers. His interests included amateur radio which he expanded to include building radio stations for the blind, air rescues, and writing for aviation publications. O.B. is survived by his wife, Lucille; daughter, Linda and husband, Richard Siegmeister; son, William and wife, Roseanne; five grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. She and her husband, Randall Murff, have been residents of Sylva since 2008 when they moved to North Carolina to be closer to family. The Murffs were originally from Mississippi and lived many years in Jackson and Webb. Blanche was born Sept. 2, 1922, in Grenada County, Miss., to Earl R. and Elizabeth Jacks Brown and grew up in Calhoun County, Miss. She graduated from Holmes Junior College in Decatur, Miss., on Dec. 25, 1942. She married Randall Murff of Calhoun County before his overseas military deployment during World War II. Blanche retired from Sears in 1976. She was an active member of Alta Woods Baptist Church of Jackson, Miss., serving as a Sunday school teacher for many years. Her greatest interests in life were her family, church and friends. She was a very creative and talented lady who enjoyed painting, drawing and applied her artistic talents in many ways. Funeral services will be at 5 p.m. today (Thursday, May 8) at Appalachian Funeral Services with the Rev. Johnny Lee officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 until 5 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. A graveside service and burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Grenada, Miss., on Saturday, May 10. He had been employed by Ky. Utilities for 28 years and at the time of his retirement in 1959 he was district manager in Versailles. He was a native of Junction City, son of the late William G. and Susie Hocker Blankenship and a member of the Methodist Church. He was president of the Woodford Co.
