362 David Stary-Sheets
An Anchor Bay memorial service is pending for David Stary-Sheets, a noted art dealer and former Gualala resident, who died at his home in Irvine on May 31, at the age of 60.
Born August 23, 1939, in Claremont, California, he graduated from Webb School for Boys and attended Claremont Mens College, Chaffey College, and San Diego State University. After college, he built custom homes and began designing and building furniture. In 1980, he married Susan Stary and moved to Gualala where he crafted one-of-a-kind custom furniture for clients, both locally and nationally.
Through his close relationship with his artist father, the late Millard Sheets, and exposure to the artists in Southern California, he developed special appreciation for the field of art history known as California Regionalism, which focused on art in California in the 1920s, ‘30s and ‘40s. He became a recognized authority in that field, and he and his wife Susan opened Stary-Sheets Fine Art in Gualala, which specialized in the California Regionalists. The gallery also showcased David’s custom furniture.
While living in Gualala, David Stary-Sheets was a strong supporter of Gualala Arts, chairing several shows and helping to create the Gualala Arts Center.
In 1990, David Stary-Sheets became a full-time art dealer. He and Susan relocated the Stary-Sheets Find Art Gallery to Southern California, first in Irvine, and then in Laguna Beach.
He also c-founded the Fine Art Dealers Association, with members nationwide. He served as president for two years.
Mr. Stary-Sheets is survived by his wife of 20 years, Susan Stary-Sheets; his son, David Revel Sheets; daughter, Peggy Swegle and son-in law Randy Swegle and their children Caitlyn and Max Swegle; brothers Owen Sheets and his wife Jacqueline Brittain, Tony Sheets and his wife Flower, sister Carolyn Owen-Towle and husband Tom, 22 nieces and nephews, and 12 great-nieces and nephers.
In addition to a memorial service to be scheduled at Barking Rocks in Anchor Bay, a memorial service will be held in mid-summer at Scripps College.

363 David Stary-Sheets; Furniture Designer, Art Dealer
David Stary-Sheets, 60, former creator of custom furniture who became an art dealer and expert on the California Regionalist movement. The son of premier Southern California realist painter Millard Sheets, he had operated Stary-Sheets Fine Art Gallery with his wife, Susan, for the last decade. First in Irvine and since 1996 in Laguna Beach, the gallery focused on his custom furniture and on work by the California Regionalist or California Style artists who worked largely in watercolors in the 1920s through ‘40s. Stary-Sheets became a prominent figure in the arts community--lecturing, writing widely and acting as curator for exhibits on the Realist painters. The couple lent paintings from their own collection to boost new museums such as the Irvine Fine Arts Center in 1993 and in 1997-98 were curators of “California Style: 1930s and ‘40s.” That exhibit, organized for the Sebastopol Center for the Arts, was also displayed at the Orange County Museum of Art and the Ventura County Museum of History and Art. Born in Claremont, David Sheets was educated at the Webb School, Claremont Men’s College, Chaffey College and San Diego State. He worked briefly as a loan officer and built custom homes before turning to designing and building furniture. In the 1970s he co-founded a furniture company, Woodworks Builds Dynamite Furniture, based in Ontario, Calif. Sheets hyphenated his surname after marrying Susan Stary in 1980. The couple, who started an art gallery when they lived in Northern California, were active in several arts and cultural groups in Orange County. Among those was Stop-Gap, a theatrical company dealing with social problems. Stary-Sheets was a co-founder of the Fine Art Dealers Assn. and served as president of the national group from 1994 to 1996. On May 31 in Irvine.

Burial followed in a Fort Lauderdale cemetery.
Mr. Endsley died in Fort Lauderdale Hospital Saturday morning at 1 following a collapse last Wednesday.
Death was due to a condition from which he had suffered for five years. He had undergone surgery twice within the last three years. He showed some improvement after an operation in April of 1952 and until last Wednesday had been able to go about in reasonable comfort. He and Mrs. Endsley, the former Miss Elva Lardin, a teacher in the Tarentum schools, attended church services on the Sunday before his death.

372 Death Calls Settler Closing Useful Life
J.M. Adams Dies at Sterling, Kan. – Helped in Organization of Beulah Covenanter Congregation

J.M. Adams, who homesteaded in Nuckolls county in 1880, died at his home in Sterling, Kan., March 12, at the age of 83 years. He lived, with his family, on the old homestead near Bostwick until 1906, when they moved to Sterling, to enable the children to enter the college there.

Mr. Adams was one of the organizers of Beulah Covenanter congregation.

Funeral services were held in Sterling and burial was in the Sterling Cemetery.

Obituary

James Moore Adams, the eldest son of William and Mary Adams, was born at Oakdale, Ill., Jan. 1, 1849 and departed this life at his home in Sterling, Kan., March 12, 1932, at the age of 83 years, 2 months and 11 days.

At the age of 22 he moved to Wahoo, Nebr., where he taught school one year. The next year, 1872, he took a homestead in Platte county, Nebraska where he lived for eight years.

On September 30, 1880, he was united in marriage with Miss Rachel McKeown near Mediapolis, Iowa. To this union were born nine children, four sons and five daughters.

After marriage Mr. Adams and his bride settled on a farm near Bostwick where they endured all the privations and hardships of early pioneers. Drought and grasshopper plague were met with characteristic stoicism and fortitude. For 25 years he worked to improve his farm home and became a progressive stock farmer. Here all his nine children were born. He helped to organized the Beulah congregation of which he was an elder and active member.

Mr. Adams having himself been deprived of a good education, resolved that all his children should have the opportunity of thorough college training. All the children with the exception of the eldest son have graduated from Sterling College. For three years Mr. Adams served on the College Board.

Mr. Adams was a life long member of the Covenanter church and has always taken an active interest in church work. He served in the capacity of elder and teach for fifty years. It was his greatest disappointment in his declining years that he was unable to attend church services.

Two years ago Mr. and Mrs. Adams celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Mr. Adams death is the first break to occur in the family circle as all the children and grand children are living.

Besides a host of friends Mr. Adams leaves to mourn his loss his wife, Mary, a missionary of Wan Fau, China; Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Adams and three children of Grant, Nebraska; Pearl, a teacher in Wichita, Kansas; J.P., a farmer at Sterling, Kansas; Rev. and Mrs. R.C. 393 Della E. Stokes
Della Elzora Stokes was born near Missouri Valley, Harrison County, Iowa, April 12, 1880 and died at the University hospital in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on Saturday, April 21, at the age of 48 years and 9 days. In February 1897 she moved with her parents to Herman, Nebraska. Here she attended high school and graduated with the class of 1899. The following year she attended the Penn State Norman at Peru, Nebraska, and fitted herself for a teacher, teaching in the schools of Washington County, Nebraska for one year.
She was united in marriage to Samuel J. Caskey on August 1, 1901 at Blair, Nebraska. They went to line at Clarinda, Iowa. She was united with the Methodist church wen a girl. While living at Clarinda, she attended the Presbyterian church and was an active worker, teaching a Bible class for a number of years. She moved with her husband to Beaver county, Oklahoma about 25 years later. They moved to Billings, Oklahoma where her husband was engaged in business. While residing in Beaver county she again resumed teaching and taught for seventeen years in that and Noble county, holding the position of eighth grade teacher for a number of terms in the city schools of Billings and Medford. It is said she held one of the highest first grade certificates ever issued to a teacher in Oklahoma. For the past few years she has been a resident of Perry, Oklahoma and was taken from her to the hospital at Oklahoma City on Monday preceding her death, where it was found she was suffering from pernicious Anemia. During those few days at the hospital everything possible was done to improve her condition but with no avail, and on Saturday, April 21 she was relieved from her helpless condition.
She is survived by four brothers, C.W. Stokes of Max Bass, North Dakota, L.C. Stokes of Hardy, Saskatchewan, Canada, P.M. Stokes of Ceylon, Saskatchewan, Canada, and J.R. Stokes of Tacoma, Washington; four sisters, Mrs. Dora Hilsinger, Herman, Nebraska, Mrs. Jennie Johnson, Battle View, North Dakota, Mrs. Maude Ballard and Miss Minnie Stokes of Bowbell, North Dakota.
Funeral services have not been arranged, waiting the arrival of relatives but it is thought she will be taken back to her girlhood home at Herman, Nebraska and buried beside her father.
Her sister, Mrs. Johnson of North Dakota who has been with her the past two weeks was on her way home and failed to receive the message, which accounts for the delay in arrangements.
Beside the relatives she leaves a number of friends of Perry and various parts of Oklahoma, who are left to mourn the loss of an honest, generous and true neighbor and friend.
