    He taught soil chemistry at what is now the Penn State Mont Alto campus, but was then the Pennsylvania State Forest School, approximately 1909-1929. He lived much of his life in Columbus, OH, and was previously married to Dorothy Doan Davis, who died in the early 1970's.

    Dr. John T. Auten
    Lewisburg – A funeral for Dr. John Thompson Auten, 88, College Park, who died Monday in his home will be conducted Friday morning in Rutherford Funeral Home, Columbus, Ohio. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery, Columbus, Ohio.
    A native of Illinois, he was born in White Hall on Nov. 6, 1887, a son of the late William A. and Martha Ann Thompson Auten. His first wife, the former Dorothy Doan Davis, who died in 1973. In 1974, he married the former Josephine Kreider Ziegler, who survives.
    Dr. Auten received his BS degree from the University of Illinois in 1916. In 1923, he received his MS and in 1929 his Ph.D. from Iowa State College.
    He was a professor of soils chemistry at Mont Alto State Forest School from 1923-1929 and a silviculturist at Central States Experimental Station, U.S. Forest Service, Columbus, Ohio from 1929-1951. From 1951-1967 he was a consultant in forest soils for the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Co. and in 1973 Dr. Auten received an award by the Ohio Chapter of the Society of American Foresters for outstanding contributions to the chapter and to the society.
    He was a veteran of World War I and a member of Kratzer Dull Post 182, American Legion, Lewisburg; Alpha Zeta Sigma Chi and Phi Lamba Epsilon honorary fraternity.
    He was active in amateur radio, painting, wood working, and marquetry.
    Surviving in addition to his widow, is a son, Dr. John H. Auten, of Alexandria, Va. and three grandchildren. Also surviving are three step-daughters.
    Local arrangements are by the John Shaw III Funeral Home, Lewisburg.
