    Notes:

David and Magdalena were both doctors. They made their own medicine and helped with the delivery of babies.

David made a cradle that was used for his own children, and then it was given to a neighbor family and passed down among their children. All memory of the cradle had faded among the Bierlys when in 1941, about a hundred years after it had been built, one of David's great-granddaughters was asked if her family would like the cradle back. The answer was a grateful "yes."

    Notes:

    269 COMMEMORATIVE BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD.
Anthony Bierly, the father of our subject, was born August 26, 1807, at the old Bierly homestead, near Rebersburg, and after attending for a time the local schools, such as they were, he learned the cooper's trade, completing his apprenticeship under Robert Smith, of Penns Valley. He was married in Miles township. Centre county, to Miss Rachel Ruhl, a native of York county, Penn. , born in February, 1811 . Her father died when she was a child, and an uncle, John Ruhl, who died in Lock Haven, brought her to Brush Valley, where she grew to womanhood. Neither of the young couple had any assistance from home to give them a start in life, but Anthony Bierly made a comfortable living at his trade, which he followed during his active life. As his boys became old enough for work, he kept them busy upon a farm which he owned, but he did not devote his own time to it farther than to direct their labor.
On retiring from business Anthony Bierly removed to Kreamerville to a comfortable residence built by our subject, who traded it as part payment on the home farm, agreeing as a further consideration to support his parents as long as they should live. The mother died October 21, 1886, and the father on July 2, 1890, both devout members of the Lutheran Church. He never acquired more than a fair competence, and was disinclined to contend for his rights, preferring to lose an account rather than sue any one. This peaceable disposition, together with his unshaken integrity, won him friends among all classes, and he was highly esteemed throughout the community. He was a Democrat in politics, and in early life voted regularly, but, as old age came on, his feeble health prevented him at times from getting to the polls. He had nine children, namely: Catherine, who married , first John W. Barker, and (second) Elijah Sharp, who died at Kreamerville ; Hannah, now the widow of Michael Krape, of Clintondale, Penn; Lydia now Mrs. Samuel Loose, of Rebersburg; Abigail, who married Frederick Hartman, and died in Clinton county, Penn.; Cornelius, a farmer and plasterer of Bradner, Ohio; Margaret, the widow of Gideon Kreamer of Brush Valley; R. D., our subject; Paulina now Mrs. Jacob Wolheiser, of Kreamerville; and Fauette now Mrs. David Meyer, of Miles township.
    R. D. Bierly's birth occurred February 3, 1844, in Miles township, Centre county, and he was educated in the common schools of that locality, improving his opportunities so well that before he was twenty-one he taught successfully at the Gramley school. He was reared to farm work, but, as he possessed unusual mechanical skill, he decided to learn the carpenter's trade, and after one summer at the work was as competent as most apprentices after a full term. For one year he was employed as a skilled workman, and then went into business on his own account, his reputation increasing with the progress of time until he holds to-day a foremost place among the workers in that line in his section. As a contractor he is noted for his honesty and fair dealing, and he has built many of the best residences in Centre county, including some of the most elegant homes in Millheim and Rebersburg. Other buildings which stand as evidences of his skill are the Lutheran churches at Millheim and Rebersburg, and the school houses there and in Coburn. Financially, he has prospered, and he owns two houses in Rebersburg, as well as 115 acres of timber land and forty acres of cleared land. His home in Rebersburg, built in 1897, is a model of tasteful architecture. In 1867 Mr. Bierly was married to Miss Pauline Frank, only daughter of Samuel and Saloma (Brungart) Frank. After his marriage, Mr. Bierly made his home in Kreamerville for some time before removing to Rebersburg. Seven children have blessed his marriage: Sally, the wife of Thomas Auman, of Rebersburg; Willis F. , residing at Rebersburg; Charles C. , a carpenter at Rebersburg; Melvin C. , who died June 10, 1882, at the age of four years ; and Curtis M. , Samuel A. and Raymond S., who are at home. As a citizen, Mr. Bierly 's influence is felt in every progressive movement as a helpful force. He and his wife are leading members of the Lutheran Church, in which he has held the office of deacon for many years; he is also identified with the Grange, being master for several years of Miles Grange. Politically he is e Democrat, but he is not at all bigoted, and when occasion seems to demand it he votes independently. He has never sought office, his attention being confined to other matters.

    Page 244 COMMEMORATIVE BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD.

Peter Beerly, our subject's father, was a wagonmaker in Clinton county until 1847, when he moved to Boggs township. Centre county, and continued that business throughout his remaining years. He was a man of influence, and in his last years was a Republican in politics. His death occurred December 7, 1868. His wife, Sarah Karstetter, daughter of Rudolph and Margaret Karstetter, was born June 26, 18 14, and died March 30, 1887. They were married February 19, 1837, and had eight children, whose names with dates of birth are here given: Robert, December 2, 1837, is a wheelwright and manufacturer at Central City, and a leading citizen, of whom a biography appears elsewhere; Rebecca, April 2, 1839, widow of David Watson, resides in Boggs township. Centre county; Messulan, September 14, 1841, enlisted in the army during the Civil war, and died a soldier's death February 8, 1863; Nathaniel, September 28, 1843, is the subject proper of this sketch; Tartulious, June 20, 1846; Agnes, September 24, 1849, married Byron Teller, a pumpmaker in Boggs township, Centre county; Newton, September 29, 1852, died March 4, 1853; and Lemuel, May 30, 1858, who is also a musician.
Squire Beerly began his business career in his father's wagon shop, but at the age of nineteen i he enlisted in Company B, 148th F. V. I., under Col. James F. Weaver. He spent three years in the service, and was detailed as member of a brass band. He fortunately escaped all wounds, although he took part in many hotly contested [battles, including those of the "Wilderness, j Spottsylvania, Gettysburg and Petersburg. Not until peace was restored did he return home. He worked with his father for three years, and after the death of the latter continued the business in partnership with Robert Beerly, the brother mentioned above, until 1891. They were also engaged for some time in cider making. In 1894 Squire Beerly became interested in mercantile business at Central City with Louis F. Wetzler, his present partner, and has since conducted it successfully.
On June 1, 1874, Squire Beerly was united in marriage with Miss Ellen Heaton, but no children blessed their union. Mrs. Beerly was born February 12, 1853, a daughter of Andrew and Liddie (Poorman) Heaton. Politically the Squire is a Republican, with a decided leaning toward free silver; and in religion he favors the doctrines of the Presbyterian Church. Socially he belongs to the Grange, the G. A. R. and the "Veteran League, and at times held various township offices, having been a justice of the peace since 1879.
As director of the Milesburg band Mr. Beerly has achieved a success in which every one in the community feels personal pride. On the occa- sion of the band tournament referred to above, the citizens of Milesburg sought to give expres- sion to the popular feeling by giving an ovation to the hero of the hour, Squire Beerly. The borough council took appropriate action, and an elegant banquet was prepared by the ladies of the town at Bogg's Hall. The affair was a surprise to the Squire, who, on his arrival at Central City from Bellefonte, was met by the constable and given to understand that he was wanted in Milesburg to answer to a serious charge. Much be- wildered, but willing as a loyal citizen to submit to the authority of the law. he entered one of the carriages in waiting and soon found himself the chief figure in a triumphal procession headed by the Milesburg band, the chief burgess and the members of the borough council. On arriving at the banquet hall in Milesburg the assemblage was called to order by the clerk of the council, and various speeches were made during the evening, the Squire being presented with a beautiful gold-mounted ebony baton, which he modestly received with a few well-chosen words.

    PASSING OF DANIEL MEYER
Old Resident of Dakota, Ill. died at Age of 87 years Sunday morning at about 2 o'clock of Sep 29. Daniel Meyer passed away at his late residence in the village of Dakota after a lingering illness due to old age and a severe paralytic stroke, at the ripe age of 87 years 7 months and 5 days. The funeral took place Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at Dakota, the Rev FA Hoerner of the United Evangelical Church officiating assisted by Rev Storer of the ME Church and Rev HW Tyler, Lutheran church, Dakota and internment followed at the family lot in the cemetery of said village by the side of his faithful bosom companion who shared with him the joys, trials, and cares incident to this life for more than 64 years and preceded her husband to the endless beyond in December, 1915.

The departed one was a son of Henry and Hannah (nee Bierly) Meyer, unto whom were born nine children in the Keystone state, all of whom, with their parents, have entered upon their eternal mission, except one. Henry Meyer of Rebersburg, Centre County, PA who is the only surviving one of his prominent family.

Early in life the deceased united with the Evangelical Association and later with the United Evangelical church and continued steadfast in the faith of this church until the end. He was a pioneer as well as an old settler of Stephenson County and was highly esteemed and respected by all that gained his acquaintance.

In 1851 he was united in wedlock with Miss Matilda Rebecca Smull in Miles township, Centre County, PA and together they shared the joys and sorrows of life for 64 years, his companion preceding him in death 1 Dec 1915. To this union were born four sons and five daughters, six of whom passed away in death and three surviving are present. Those who died were Newton Henry, who was accidentally shot while hunting when 18 years of age; Peter David, who died at the age of 14 years; Thomas Ephram, who was married to Miss Hilda Nelson of Rockford; Sarah An, who was married to George McGilligan of Janesville, IA; and two daughters died in infancy. The surviving children are: John F Meyer of Dakota; Mrs Edward Lauck, Peabody, KS, and Mrs Lincoln Goodman, Rock City, Ill. Fifteen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren also survive.

In his youthful years the deceased served an apprenticeship at cabinet making with Major John Meyer in his native locality, and for several years worked at this trade, but being desirous of bettering their condition, they elected to seek their fortune in the then regarded far west and after a long and tedious journey, they reached this locality on 31 Dec 1853, and have resided here until the Death Angel gathered them to their immortal home.

After reaching Illinois, Mr Meyer soon discovered that his trade was of no practical benefit to him, an he therefore concluded to change his vocation and followed farming at which calling he made a success. After reaching an age when farm labor became too burdensome he retired in 1895 and resided in the village of Dakota enjoying a well earned rest in his declining years.

Those present at the funeral from a distance besides the ones mentioned heretofore were Grant Burbank; Rockford; Mrs Hilda Meyer and son Evans, Pecatonica; Mr Nate Colby and wife, Davis; Mr & Mrs PO Stiver, Mrs Frank Duck, Mrs Henry Pash, Mr & Mrs Oscar Smull, and Mrs Lizzie Bowers, Freeport; Jacob Meyers and daughter, Elkhorn, Wis; Mr & Mrs Myron Smull and Mrs & Mrs Frank Smith, McConnell; and Edward Weirick, Stockton.

The family return thanks to neighbors and friends for sympathy and assistance during their bereavement.

Samuel B., born Feb. 12, 1833; married Maggie E. Moore. His wife was born Nov. 25, 1846. Samuel lives at Milesburg, Pa., and is a millwright by occupation, having learned his trade with George Shoupe, Aaronsburg, Pa. While still single Samuel used to teach in the common schools and was considered a very successful instructor. His education was acquired in the common schools of his neighborhood, — and mainly by hard study at home without the assistance of an instructor. He also had attended the Aaronsburg Academy, Centre county, for sometime, which afforded opportunities for study in higher branches.

Author of Genealogy of the Meyer Family. 1890.

Henry — author of this book — was born in Miles township, Centre County, Pa., Dec. 8, 1840. It is not considered good taste for one to "blow his own horn." I shall, therefore, be very brief. I was brought up on father's farm doing such work as usually falls to the lot of farmer boys; and during the Winter season attended, two or three months in a term, the common schools of the neighborhood. In the Spring of 1860 I left home to learn the millwright trade with John Todd, then residing at Potters Mills, Pa., — a trade which both father and grandfather had followed before me. Whatever spare time I had was generally devoted to reading, and the study of mathematics or other subjects that had a bearing on my trade. Sometime in August, 1862, I returned home and on the 19th of that month enlisted in the army for "three years or during the war." A number of my old comrades enlisted about the same time and we were a few days later organized at Camp Curtin, Harrisburg, Pa., as Company "A" of the 148. Regt. P. V. We went through the usual disciplinary stages of the volunteer soldier, and first got down to serious business at Chancellorsville, Va., May, 1863. There was in me a slight leaven of the military spirit, and the boom of cannon, the shriek of the shells, the roar of the musketry, the cheer of the Union Soldiers and the yell of the Rebels reverberating through the deep woods raised my enthusiasm to the highest pitch, and I felt as though I could myself vanquish a whole regiment of the enemy! That was while we lay on the picket line in an opposite direction and at a tolerably safe distance from the disturbance. But later on after a better acquaintance with the serious work before us, when those shrieking missiles began to come uncomfortably close and streams of mangled boys in blue came passing by us to the rear, then, well then, it must be confessed, my ardor abated very considerably. That was the mental and moral experience, I believe, of most of the soldiers. I was in every battle in which the regiment was engaged until my discharge, among which were those of Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Auburn Mills, Mine Run, the Wilderness and Po River or Laurel Hill, besides several skirmishes of lesser note. Never being in the hospital I took in all. I was slightly wounded at Chancellorsville, but more seriously at Po River, May 10, 1864; a minnie ball passing through my left hand near the wrist which necessitated amputation and which operation was performed May 17, 1864. by A. F. Sheldon, Surgeon in charge of Campbell Hospital, Washington, P. C. I was discharged at my own request in September following, came home and entered the Rebersburg Select School then in progress. The mutilated condition of my corporeal part rendered my trade useless to me and it became necessary to mark out a new course for the future. I taught school during the following Winter ('64 and '65), went to school again the next Summer and thus continued teaching and going to school alternately for several years. In 1866 I attended the Union Seminary, New Berlin, Pa., and in the Fall of 1868 I entered the Keystone State Normal School at Kutztown, Pa., graduating with first honors the Spring following. I assisted Supt. R. M. Magee in the Centre County Normal School for a number of years. In May, 1S75, I was elected County Superintendent of Common Schools of Center Co., for a term of three years, and was re-elected without opposition to the same office May, 1878. In the Fall of 1882 I was elected a member of the State Legislature, which, for reasons that need not be stated here, was in continuous session from Jan. 2, 1883, to Dec. 6, same year. I was married at Unionville. Centre Co., Pa., Jan. 18, 1872, to Martha Jane, daughter of Thomas J. Taylor ; and have lived ever since at Rebersburg. Pa. Roth myself and wife joined the Evangelical Church Feb. 6, 1874. Elected Justice of the Peace Feb. 18, 1890. Children .—Infant son, dead, Nov. 11. 1872; Hannah Jane, born Jan. 11, 1876; Henry Taylor, born Oct. 3, 1882; Mary Matilda, born Aug. 14, 1885; Sarah Ellen, born Sept. 1, 1887; Robert William, born Aug. 14, 1889.
