MOYER David Spencer, passed away suddenly on the 13th of July, 2002, at his home in Victoria. David's death is mourned, and his absence deeply felt, by those whom he loved and who love him: his wife, Gretchen; his sons, Colin and Ian; his daughters-in-law, Ruth and Jennifer; his grandson, Bennett; his mother, Frances; his sister, Sara; his niece and nephews, and many other relations and friends. We shall miss him for the vigor and unreserved enthusiasm with which he lived his life. An anthropologist by profession, but a polymath by disposition, he explored human knowledge in the broadest possible terms from scholarly and literary to the technical and practical. In whatever he undertook, whether the pursuit of his interests in photography, fishing, cycling and gardening, or the cultivation of family life, he realized his impulse to do it well. From all these things, he provided us with a wonderfully eclectic conversation that has ended far too soon. Our only solace for his untimely departure from a life lived fully and well is that he devoted so much of it to his family, and has left us with an abundance of wonderful memories. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 23 at the University of Victoria Interfaith Chapel. A reception will follow at the University Club. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in David's memory to the UVic Society for Students with a Disability, UVic Development Office, P.O. Box 3060 STNCSC, Victoria, B.C. V8W 3R4 (the Development Office phone number is 250-721-7624).
