In 1848 Mr. Stover was married in Haines Township, by Rev. Mr. Reese, a Lutheran minister, to Miss Malinda A. Kreider, who was born September 13, 1829, in Lebanon, Penn., where her grandfather, Jacob Kreider, was a well-known citizen in his day. He and his wife, Catherine (Smith), reared a family of five children — two sons and three daughters — Philip, Mrs. Stover's father, being the eldest. The other son, Jacob, died in 1811.

The funeral of the late Dr. J. B. Kreider was held Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock from St. Paul's Lutheran church. Rev. Dr. J. H. Culler conducting services. A large congregation was present. At the conclusion of the services the remains were laid to rest in Oakwood cemetery, beside those of Mrs. Kreider.

WEAVER – Mrs. Mary C. Weaver, wife of Daniel Weaver, of Wolf’s Store, was stricken with apoplexy at ten o’clock on Monday morning and died at noon without having regained consciousness.
She was a daughter of Philip and Leah Kreider and was born in Penn township in 1842, hence was past sixty-six years of age. She was married to Daniel Weaver in 1867 and almost ever since they have been residents of Miles township. She was a member of the Reformed church and universally regarded for her kind disposition and noble traits of character.
In addition to her husband she is survived by the following children: Clayton D., of Wolf’s Store; Ammon P., of Bethlehem; Calvin J. and Mrs. William Meyers, of Wolf’s Store; Orlando W., of Rebersburg, and Miss Melinda, at home. The funeral was held at ten o’clock yesterday morning from the Reformed church at Rebersburg. Rev. Frank Wetzel officiated and interment was made in the Rebersburg cemetery.

PERRY H. STOVER, senior member of the well-known firm of Stover & Whitmyer, lumber merchants of Coburn, Centre County, is an able business man and a public-spirited citizen whose genial disposition and high character have attracted to him a host of friends.

As he is descended from two leading families, a review of his ancestral history will be of interest. His great-grandfather, George Stover, had but two children, Jacob and John, of whom the former went to California during the “gold fever” of 1849, and while at sea on his way home a few years later, had a sunstroke, from the effects of which he died at La Crosse, Wis. John Stover, the grandfather of our subject, was killed in early manhood while blasting rock in the construction of the first railroad from Millheim to Brush Valley, which lay along Elk creek, but on the opposite side from the present road. His wife, Mary (Yeagley), died from colic, neither of them having attained the age of twenty-one. Both were buried at Aaronsburg, where they resided when their only child, George W., was born, February 17, 1826.

The late George W. Stover, the father of our subject, was reared by his maternal grandmother, Anna Maria Yeagley, wife of John Yeagley, in what was then Haines (now Penn) township. Centre county. After a course in the district schools he studied higher branches at Mifflintown and Mifflinburg, and, thus prepared, began the work of teaching, in which he continued successfully for three or four years. In 1842 he began to learn the miller's trade at Pine Creek Mills, and after acquiring a knowledge of the work remained there for a time as an employee. Our subject's parents began housekeeping at Nittany Hall, and remained until June, 1849, when they settled upon the farm now occupied by Mrs. Stover. It had belonged to her father, and the claims of the other heirs were purchased in order to acquire it. There was only a log cabin upon the place, once used as a distillery, but they made their home there until the present comfortable residence could be built. The first purchase was five acres, and later eighty acres adjoining were secured to make the farm as it is to-day. Before leaving Nittany Valley, Mr. Stover had bought tracts of timber land, which he afterward developed profitably. In 482 the spring of 1859 he engaged in the distillery business in a small way, continuing more than twenty-five years, and this and other enterprises so engrossed his time that the care of the farm was left to the other members of the family or to hired help. During the last five years of his life he suffered from paralysis. His death occurred May 2, 1889, and he was buried at Aaronsburg.

For more than forty-five years he was a prominent member of the Reformed Church, serving often as deacon, and being always ready to contribute toward the advancement of the work.

He helped to build three churches of this denomination, his liberality in this direction being one phase of a lifelong interest in all the movements which would promote the public welfare. He was a Democrat, although the family had in the main belonged to other parties. His interest in public affairs was keen, and he served in various township offices — auditor, school director, assessor and justice of the peace — and he was a warm friend of improvement in the schools of his district. At his death he left his property to his widow, a woman of kindly heart and noble character, who was of great assistance to him in his career. She is well preserved, and although she has met with accidents at various times which have caused seven bone fractures, she has un- usual vitality and is very active for one of her age. Her memory is remarkable, especially of dates, her reminiscences of early life being very interesting, and her natural abilities are of a high order. Since 1844 she has been a constant member of the Reformed Church. Our subject was the first child in a family of five, the others being: Mary E., born October 29, 1853, married Thomas B. Motz, of Penn township. Centre county; John C, born May 27, 1855, died October 20, 1893, leaving a widow; Oscar J., born July 25, 1860, lived only two years; Kreider H., born July 12, 1873, is a telegraph operator.

Perry H. Stover was born at Nittany Hall, Centre County, October 4, 1848, and was but a child when his parents removed to the present homestead. He attended the local schools, which were much inferior to those of the present day, and then pursued his studies further at Rebersburg under Supt. Magee, and at Aaronsburg with Prof. Gotwalt. His parents being well-to-do, and having a high estimate of the value of a good education, gave to all their children much better opportunities than fell to the lot of most young people of their time. On leaving school, Mr. Stover taught successfully for three years in Penn Township, Centre County, and Long Swamp, Berks Co., Penn. All his spare time, either as student or teacher, was spent at home, his father's numerous and varied enterprises affording an abundance of work for him as the eldest son. Later he gave his entire attention to these interests, residing with his parents until October, 1877, and his services were of no small value.

In 1875, Mr. Stover was married in Miles Township. Centre county, to Miss Eliza J. Wolf, who was born August 1, 1851, the daughter of Henry Wolf, a leading farmer of Brush Valley. In the fall of 1877, Mr. Stover and his young wife removed to Coburn, where he opened the "Coburn Hotel, "a well-known hostelry built by his father. He remained there four years and a half, conducting also a livery business. In the meantime he became associated with his father in a grain business, which, with the coal business connected with it, came into his hands in 1880. As sole owner he continued until February, 1884, when he sold out to Smith & Co. In 1887 he entered the employ of William Whitmer & Sons, lumber dealers, and occupied a responsible position with them until 1894, when the present partnership was formed.

Mr. Stover is a member of the Reformed Church, and his wife is a Lutheran. They have no children. Their home in Coburn is a pleasant one, and at the time it was built by Mr. Stover it was considered one of the best in that section. Politically he is a Democrat, but his keen interest in the success of his party is quite impersonal as he is not anxious for office. He has served one term as justice of the peace, however. Fraternally he belongs to the Odd Fellows Lodge at Millheim, and is a charter member of the Patriotic Order Sons of America at Coburn.

Dr. Henry R. Kreider, First Chairman of the Department of Chemistry, University of Toledo
Dr. Henry R. Kreider, born into a rural Pennsylvania family April 24, 1874, graduated from Franklin and Marshall College with BA and MA degrees in 1898. In 1901, he was graduated by Eastern Theological Seminary in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and was ordained as a minister in the Reformed Church (United Church of Christ). After his marriage to Mary Elizabeth Moyer in 1902 and his serving a pastorate of three years, he entered the graduate school in chemistry at Johns Hopkins University in 1904. He suspended his studies for two years for a teaching position at the Pennsylvania State Forest Academy at Mont Alto, Pennsylvania and a research fellowship at Dalhousie College, Halifax, N.S., then received his PhD in 1910 from Johns Hopkins.

For the following three years, 1910-1913, Dr. Kreider occupied the Chair of Chemistry at Baltimore Medical College, while continuing to do research in free radicals at Johns Hopkins University. In 1913 he accepted the position of Acing Professor of Chemistry at Carleton College, Northfield, Minnesota.

In 1915, Dr. Kreider joined the fledgling University of Toledo, then located on Cherry Street, as Professor of Chemistry and Chairman of the Department, and he served in this capacity until his retirement in 1944. Dr. Kreider was a strong and stable influence in the growth and development of the department, as he oversaw its eventual move to University Hall at the new campus on W. Bancroft Street. He was a member of many scientific, professional, and fraternal organizations and was instrumental in establishing and was charter member of the Toledo Section of the American Chemical Society.

Dr. Kreider's unusual personality is shown by his activity in two fields of endeavor - science and the ministry. Along with his academic duties, he was able to continue his witness to a strong religious faith as assistant pastor of the then First Reformed Church of Toledo for seven years and later as pastor of the then Emanuel Reformed Church of Haskins, Ohio for eleven years and continued to be active in church work as long as his health permitted. Long after his retirement from the University he continued to write or talk on one of his favorite subjects, "Science and Religion" in which he found no conflict in his own mind, but felt that one strengthened the other. In 1959 he and his wife moved to Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, where he died in 1961 at the age of 87.

He was a gentle, modest man with a keen sense of humor, a ready story and a flair for poetry. As an undergraduate at Franklin Marshall, he was designated class poet of his class of 1898. His stature as a scientist and teacher was enhanced by his kindly understanding of his students. They looked upon him as counselor and guide, as well as teacher. At his urging, many of the students went on to graduate school in chemistry or to medical school and have held influential positions throughout the country.

Josephine K. Ziegler Auten, peacefully departed this life January 2, 2007. She was born April 22, 1906 in Mont Alto, PA, the daughter of Henry R. and Mary Elizabeth (Moyer) Kreider. She grew up in Toledo, OH, lived for a number of years in Gainesville, FL, and for nearly 50 years in Lewisburg, PA. Her last 6 years were spent in Columbus, OH. She was predeceased by her first husband Edwin A. Ziegler, in 1967, by her second husband John T. Auten, in 1976, and by her daughter Elizabeth Z. Olson in 2006. She is survived by two daughters, Miriam M. Ziegler (Thomas Baldwin) of Tucson, AZ, and Joanna Z. Page (Alan Page) of Belchertown, MA; a brother, Henry R. Kreider of St. Petersburg, FL, and a sister, Ruth Hiltner of Cleveland, OH; seven grandchildren, David (Pamela) Zweizig, Miriam Zweizig (Michael Biggins), Andrew (Holly) Zweizig, James Page, Matthew (Sara) Page, Rebecca Baldwin, Ruth Baldwin; six great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson. Mrs. Auten earned a B.A. from the University of Toledo (OH) and a M.A. from Columbia University. She had a long career as a teacher, social worker, and devoted wife and mother. Her life was filled with volunteer civic, philanthropic, and church work, including the Red Cross, the Tri-County Girl Scout Council, the A.A.U.W., the League of Women Voters, the Lewisburg Business and Professional Women's Club, and the Lewisburg Civic Club. She was an active member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Lewisburg, PA for over 50 years. A local memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 19, 2007 in the Westminster chapel at the Westminster-Thurber Community, 717 Neil Avenue, Columbus, OH 43215, (614) 228-8888. KREIDER, Henry Royer on March 31, 2012, Henry Royer Kreider died in St. Petersburg, at the age of 100. He was born Dec. 31, 1911, in Baltimore, MD to Henry and Elizabeth (Moyer) Kreider. He receive a B.S. and M.S. from the University of Toledo and a Ph.D in chemistry from Ohio State University. Following graduation, Dr. Kreider worked for the American Medical Association, where he worked on drug standardization; at Mead Johnson, and served as associate director of research at William S. Merrell; as director of research at Cheesebrough-Ponds; as Vice-President of Viobin Corporation; and as director of research at Sherman Laboratories. Dr. Kreider was a member of the American Chemical Society, the Society of Cosmetic Chemists, American Research Directors, American Institute of Chemists, Sigma Xi, Phi Lambda Upsilon, Sigma Chi. An Intellectually curious person, Dr. Kreider read and traveled extensively, was an avid sailor, a cyclist, graduating to a three-wheeler at the age of 95. He was a loving husband to his wife Virginia who predeceased him in 2005, and caring father, grandfather and great-grandfather. We will all miss his great sense of humor. Survivors include his two children, Kent Kreider and Joan Berardo; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked memorial contributions be made to University of Toledo. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that contributions be made to the Henry R. HILTNER RUTH MOYER KREIDER HILTNER, aged 94, died February 5, 2011. Ruth was born in Toledo, OH on April 23, 1916, to Mary Elizabeth Moyer and Rev. Henry Royer Kreider. Ruth married William Albert Hiltner on August 12, 1939. They lived for many years in Williams Bay, WI and later in Ann Arbor, MI. Ruth was active in volunteer work all her life, including serving as President of the Badger Girl Scout Council from 1966 to 1970. Ruth is survived by brother Henry Kreider, daughter Kathryn Mook; sons William and Stephen; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; her daughter Anne; and her sister Josephine Auten. Interment will be at Lutheran & Reformed Cemetery, Rebersburg, PA.
