Klopp’s Church was established in 1752. Originally a log church and churchyard was located on a hill on Valentine Uhrich’s farm (Walborn on the 1875 Bethel Township, Lebanon County, Warrantee Map). The location was said to be about 1/3 mile from the BerksCounty line and about ¼ mile south of the current location towards the Little Swatara Creek. The log church was said to have been burned by Indians during the French and Indian War. A new church and cemetery were established in 1767 at the current location. In 1877, the bodies (about a dozen) from the original cemetery were moved to the present location. All were interred in a common grave along the north boundary of the present cemetery.
No family plots existed until 1867 when the cemetery was expanded. Burials were made next in line. Many of the tombstones at Klopp’s have the initials J.B. carved in the lower right corner of the tombstone. Joseph Brownmiller is J.B. (Find A Grave# 64983967). More information about J.B. can be found in the book mentioned below by Claire Messimer.
Klopp’s and Hamlin cemetery (located just North of Klopp’s, established in 1908) are frequently confused. Death certificates list burials at Hamlin, when in fact, the individual was buried at Klopp’s. This continues through 2017!
