    Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in St. Paul’s Episcopal church for Clarence Brain, 76, nationally-known Mason who died Saturday in his home, 604 NW 17. Burial is to be in Memorial Park cemetery under direction of Guardian funeral home.
    A member of the Society of Blue Friars, the journalist of Masonry. Brain was a collector of original Masonic publications and records.
    Collectors term Brain’s Masonic library as “priceless.” Among the rare volumes is a ritual written in longhand by Albert Pike.
    Past master of lodge No.36, Brain was high priest of the Royal Arch Masons, past master of council No.18, past grad high priest of the Royal Arch Masons, Knights York Cross of Honor, Knight Commander Court of Honor, member of ritual committee of the general grand chapter of the Royal Arch Masons, Grand Chancellor or the College of Rites and member of the Royal Order of Scotland.
    He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, of the home, and son, Gilbert T. Brain, Huron, S.D. Bearers will be Robert H. Sherman, Gen. William S. Key, Dennis Donovan, Harry House, Vernon Downing, J.S. Tate, W.C. Schmitt, William H. Powell, Roy R. Russel and W. King Larimore.

    William F. Brain, Editor Of Early-Day Political Journal, Dies in Atoka
    William Fielding Brain, pioneer newspaperman and politician of eastern Oklahoma, died June 29 at the home of a daughter in Atoka, where he started his journalistic career in 1882. Funeral services were held June 30 in the Christian church of Atoka, and burial was in an Atoka cemetery.
    Brain, an editor of the old school, worked on papers in Atoka until 1900, when he went to Muskogee and became a reporter on the staff of the Phoenix.
    At one time Brain published a political journal which he called Brain’s Gladiator. During heated gubernatorial campaigns copies of the paper sometimes sold for as much as $1 each.
    At a banquet for William H. Murray during the first Oklahoma legislative session, Brain made the only public speech of his life. In it he predicted that Murray some day would became governor. When his prediction materialized years later, Brain was the first honorary colonel to be appointed by the new governor.
    Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. John Hammons, Atoka, and Mrs. J.S. Fulton, in whose home he died, and two sons, Clarence Brain, Oklahoma City, and William F. Brain Jr., Dallas, Tex.

    Morehead, Ky. – March 5 – Capt. James Carey, eighty years old, died at his home here. Capt. Carey was one of the pioneer settles of Rowan county, having lived here before this county was organized. He served as Captain in the Union army during the Civil war. He was also County Judge of this county for two terms shortly after its organization, and was always prominent in Rowan county politics.
    He leaves a widow and five children, among them are: J.M. Carey, Postmaster of this place; John Carey, of Kansas; C.G. Carey, United States storekeeper and gauger; Mrs. W.J. Rice and Mrs. Powers, who lives here.

    MHR note: James married second to Mary D. (Clack) Ringo. She was the widow of Lott Ringo whom she had married 7 September 1815 in Fleming County, Kentucky. Mary and Lott Ringo had 5 children: Fidelia Ringo (m. McPherson), Burtis G. Ringo (m. Nancy), Ann L. Ringo (m. H. T. Prather) , William Wallace Ringo, and Harrier D. Ringo (m. Sapp). Mary D. Clack was the daughter of Moses Clack. Mary D. (Clack) Ringo Cassity had two brother: Dixon Clack and Philip D. Clack.


    MHR note: Mary Ann Cassity is given as "Polly Ann" on the stone. The Hargiss Cemetery is across a very narrow road from the railroad tracks. the graves have coffin-like covers and there is a tiny one beside theirs and a child-sized one next to that, both without inscriptions. The man living next to the little cemetery (James Edward Hall) said several stones had disappeared from the cemetery one night. One may have been that of their son, "Russell" Cassity.


    LKH note: Burials in the Hargis Cemetery were relocated during the Cave Run Lake construction project, 1965-1974. Some burials were relocated to Alfrey Cemetery. However, I can find no information for relocation of James Albert Cassity and his family.

    James married Mary Ann Hedges on 9 Jun 1825 in Fleming County, Kentucky. Mary (daughter of Levi Hedges and Rosannah Ribelin) was born on 7 Sep 1800 in Fleming County, Kentucky; died on 28 Oct 1838 in Fleming County, Kentucky; was buried in Hargis Cemetery, Morehead, Rowan County, Kentucky.     MHR note: When Mary "Polly Ann" (Hedges) Cassity died, her body was hauled on a sled drawn by an ox-team which forded a stream to get to Morehead. She is buried in Hargis Cemetery near the rail road tracks in Morehead.
