Skipper Royster Hedges was born on May 22, 1939, in Kansas City, MO, to Herbert Arlington Hedges, Sr. and Ellen Jacqueline "Jacky" (Royster) Hedges.
Skipper attended Pembroke Country Day School in Kansas City, MO, as well as Culver Military Academy in Culver, In. He graduated in May 1957 from Pembroke and according to his senior yearbook he was a member of the Dramatics Club, Science Club, and the "Raider" yearbook staff. After high school, Skipper attended Drury College in Springfield, MO; the Metropolitan Community College in Kansas City, MO; and the University of Missouri Kansas City, but he did not complete a degree.
For a short period of time Skipper sold insurance for the Equitable Life Insurance Company of Iowa. In 1962, Skipper left the insurance industry to pursue a career in law enforcement when he was hired as a Deputy by the Jackson County Sherriff's Patrol (JCSP). On May 2, 1963, Skipper married Sharon Elaine Miller at the Christian Union Church in Richmond, MO. The couple had one daughter, named Kimberly Hedges-Ensminger, and divorced shortly after her birth. On February 8, 1964, Skipper married Barbara Ann DeCavele in Kansas City, MO One daughter was born to this union named Sabrina Monee "Bri" Hedges-Brown.
In 1965, Skipper left the JCSP after he was elected as the City Marshall of Lake Lotawana, MO in a three-way race against Jean Swisher and Gene Silvey. One year later he was appointed to the Metropolitan Major Case Squad, which was formed to investigate major, multi-jurisdictional crimes in the Kansas City area. Skipper was reelected as City Marshall in 1969. During his time with the Lake Lotawana Police Dept., Skipper gained recognition for revising the city's road traffic code, updating the department's policies and procedures, assisting the Blue Springs Police Dept. in the restructuring of their record system, and establishing a police department for Weatherby Lake, MO. On December 2, 1970, Skipper was elected President of the Metropolitan Chiefs and Sheriffs Association.
In 1972, Skipper ran an unsuccessful campaign to become the Democratic nominee for Sherriff of the Jackson County Sherriff's Dept. against William Carnes. After this primary loss, Skipper also lost his position as Lake Lotawna's City Marshall in the general election to Homer E. Frisby by just 60 votes. Following these electoral disappointments, Skipper worked for the Blue Springs Police Dept., where he wrote a new standard operational procedure manual, and later as an Investigator for the Missouri Social Services Division. In 1975, Skipper divorced Barbara and moved from Lake Lotawana to Blue Springs, MO. In 1977, Skipper made another unsuccessful bid to become the Democratic nominee for Jackson County Sherriff. On May 31, 1978, Skipper married Tanya Kay "Tamie" (Yarrington) Accurso. Skipper and Tamie had two daughters: Britton Royster Hedges and Hilary Skipper Hedges. During the 1980s, Skipper worked in various capacities for the Camden County Sheriff's Dept., St. Clair County Sheriff's Office, Osage Beach Police Dept., and the Windsor Police Dept., while also operating a consulting business called Sab-Brit LLC.
On July 14, 1990, Skipper was appointed as Interim Chief of Police of the Grain Valley Police Dept. (GVPD) by a unanimous vote of the city's Board of Alderman. In addition to his duties as Chief, Skipper was tasked with overseeing the search for a fulltime replacement for former Chief Earl Brackman, developing a new budget, addressing citizen's complaints with the police department, and writing a new procedure manual. On September 15, 1990, the Board voted to make Skipper the permanent, full-time Chief of Police. Over the next seven years, Skipper was credited with upgrading the department's equipment, instituting a zero-tolerance policy for drug convictions, developing a neighborhood watch program, initiating the first D.A.R.E. program in the city, and generally making the GVPD a more professional organization. On December 13, 1997, he left the department to pursue other opportunities. Skipper spent his retirement pursuing private business ventures and passed away at the Lake of the Ozarks on June 21, 2014.

He dedicated his life to law enforcement, serving communities including Lake Lotawana, Grain Valley and St. Clair County. He was a lifetime member of the Metropolitan Major Case Squad & the International Association of Chiefs of Police. He is survived by his wife, Tamie Hedges, his daughters, Kimberly Hedges-Ensminger, Sabrina Hedges-Brown, Britton Hedges and Hilary Hedges, step-daughter Gina Accurso-Casey and many grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Cliff Drive Corridor Management Committee.

Herbert A. Hedges
Herbert A. Hedges, 84, of 6025 State Line, Kansas City, died Monday, June 23, at Research Hospital. He was born in Middleport, Ohio. Mr. Hedges, a former resident of Chillicothe, known as "Mr. Life Insurance," had a long and colorful career. At an early age, he was a cabin boy on the Mississippi River on the White Collar Line. As a youth, he became a crewman for the Redpath-Vawter Chautauqua circuit, where he became intimately acquainted with celebrities of the day: William Jennings Bryan, Schumann Heinck, Champ Clark, Senator La Follette and the Ben Greet Shakespearean Players.
In March, 1918, he joined the United States Marine Corps and served on active duty in France, where he was commissioned as first lieutenant. After the war, he entered the life insurance business in Queen City, Mo. Four years later, he became general agent in Kansas City for the Equitable Life Insurance Company of Iowa, with which he enjoyed a long and successful career.
On June 15, 1978, the Kansas City Association of Life Underwriters created a Man-of-the-Year Award and called it the Herb Hedges Award. Mr. Hedges had served as a leading general agent in Kansas City, was three times honored as a Master Agency Builder, president of the National Association of Life Underwriters (with offices in New York City). He was known in the industry as a life insurance salesman's salesman. His "Fiddlers, Peddlars and Salesman" speech made him a sought-after dinner speaker.
He was a member of the Country Club Christian Church and Mission Hills Country Club. He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline R. Hedges, of the home; a son, Skipper Hedges, Kansas City, and four daughters, Cee Cee Zabor, Blue Springs; Mrs. Edwin M. Bramson, Prairie Village; Mrs. Rufus Gabel, Kansas City, and Mrs. James E. Anderson, Pullman, Wash. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Heency, South Haven, Kan., and Mrs. Grace Tallman, Keokuk, Ia.
Services will be held at 12, Friday at the Country Club Christian Church, 61st and Ward Parkway, Kansas City. Burial will be at the National cemetery, Ft. Leavenworth, Kan., at 2:30 p.m.
The family requests no flowers. Contributions may be made to Olivette Baptist Church Missionary Fund, 4901 Mission Rd., Westwood, Kansas 66205.

Herbert Arlington Hedges attended Culver-Stockton College, Canton, Missouri, and Coe College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He belongs to the Optimist Club, Christian Church, and Missouri Life Underwriters. He is National Trustee of "National Life Underwriters."

Ellen Jacqueline "Jacky" (Royster) (Hedges) Clark was the 6th child of eight (8) to be born to W.E. and Berenice S. (Scarritt) Royster.
Jacky was named after Ellen Jacqueline Mordicai, first Queen of the Mardi Gras, and fifty years later was Dowager Queen. Ms. Mordicai was one of W.E. Royster's former sweethearts and friend of the family. Jacky had creative talent, as did most of the family, and did some modeling, fashion art design, was chairman for several years of the "Yuletide Tea Dance," Kansas City's annual society ball, and a member of the Junior League. Jacky was also deeply involved in politics, both for her brother, Wm. Reid Royster, and son, Skip R. Hedges. Jacky was intelligent, witty, charming, and had a knack for entertaining, making any social event memorable. She was married to Herbert A. Hedges for almost 40 years, devoted to her children, and adored her gr'children. Jacky passed away in 1997.

Nathan Scarritt, one of the original founders of Kansas City. She attended the University of Missouri and was a Kappa Kappa Gamma. She was preceded in death by her former husband, Herbert A. Hedges, her brothers, William Reid Royster, Edward Royster and sister, Matilda Hamilton Krause. She was a member of the Junior League, Willow Creek Bible Study Group, Amazing Grace Baptist Church, Blue Hills Country Club and a former member of Mission Hills Country Club. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who brought happiness to her children and grandchildren on a daily basis. Survivors include her husband, James Clark, of the home; son, Skipper R. Hedges, Grain Valley, MO; daughter, Victoria Jacqueline Hedge Haynes “Cee-Cee”, Ft. Lauderdale, FL; sisters, Frances Royster Williams, and Margaret Royster Wright, both of Kansas City; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Fred Hedges' Parents Are Wed 65 Years. Capt. P.T. Hedges Dies In Illinois
Deceased Was Father of Rev. T.A. Hedges, Pastor of Christian Church.
Capt. P.T. Hedges, aged ninety-three years, five months and seven days, died at his home in Danville, Ill., Thursday of last week. He was a father of Rev. T.A. Hedges, pastor of the First Christian church of Thomas.
Rev. Hedges left here June the 10th and arrived in Danville at 1 p.m. the following day. His father knew him and conversed with his son regarding that he would be kept on the go to return to Thomas in time to preach the following Sunday. Mr. Hedges emphasized the fact that he wished his son to carry on his preaching, consequently when Mr. Hedges died the Rev. Hedges left Danville and arrived home Saturday and delivered a sermon Sunday morning at a joint meeting of Thomas and Hydro Christian churches which was held on Bear creek.
Rev. A.A. Hedges of Hydro occupied the pulpit of the local Christian church Sunday night.

T.A. Hedges held a revival meeting at Center Point Church, near Fairmount, Illinois, commencing on 22 August 1939 and lasting 10 days, no additions to the congregation were made.

South Haven, Kan., July 6 – T.A. Hedges, for many years a column contributor to the South Haven New Era weekly newspaper under the title ”Brother Hedges Says,” has died at the age of 98.
A native of Kentucky, he attended University of Illinois and Eureka Bible College, after which he entered the ministry of the Christian church. He was married in Illinois to Mary Virginia Adkinson who died six years ago.
The Rev. Mr. Hedges had held church pastorates in Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, and at one time served as state evangelist in Nebraska and in Missouri.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Heeney of South Haven, and Mrs. Grace Tallman, of Lakin, Kan., and three sons, A.A. Hedges of Wichita, Herbert Hedges of Kansas City, Mo., and Fred Hedges of Moberly, Mo.

Mrs. T. A. Hedges aged 86 of South Haven, Kan., the mother of Bert A. Hedges and Arthur A. Hedges of Wichita, died Sunday. She had been a resident of Kansas for more than 25 years.
Born Nov. 29, 1862, in Parkersburg, W. Va., she was the wife of Rev. T. A. Hedges of South Haven, an evangelist of the Christian church, and had lived in several midwestern states, with one son born in Ohio, one in Nebraska, a son and daughter born in Indiana, a son and daughter in Illinois and two daughters in Missouri. Two daughters preceded her in death. Rev. and Mrs. Hedges celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary on February 19.
Other survivors include: two sons, Herbert A. Hedges of Kansas City, and Fred A. Hedges of Moberly, Mo.; two daughters, Mrs. Neil Henney of South Haven nd Mrs. Lem Tallman of Canton, Mo.; 22 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. Funeral and burial services will be held Tuesday in South Haven, with her four sons, a son-in-law and a grandson acting as pallbearers.

A brief history of the regiment states "The 24th Regiment of Kentucky Volunteer Infantry was organized in the fall and winter of 1861, under Colonel Lewis B. Grigsby, and was mustered into the United States service on the 11th of December 1861 at Lexington, Kentucky, by Captain Bankhead, United States Mustering officer. Soon after its organization it joined the main army, and was engaged in many of the most severe battles of the war, and did arduous duty in eastern Kentucky and Tennessee. It would fill pages of the Report to give in detail all the places trough which the regiment marched, and the various difficulties and hardships with which it had to contend. At the muster-out at Covington, Kentucky on the 31st January 1865, the recruits were transferred to Company K, 6th Kentucky Veteran Cavalry. It participated in the following battles, in which loss was sustained, viz; Shiloh, Tennessee; Siege of Corinth, Mississippi; Perryville, Kentucky; Knoxville, Tennessee; Resaca, Georgia; Lost Mountain, Atlanta, Georgia and Jonesboro".
We can assume that Peter Thompson Hedges would have been in all of the above up to Resaca Georgia.

Capt. Peter T. Hedges, 92, for many years a resident of Oakwood township, who for the past two years had been making his home with his daughter Mrs. Ida Cronkhite, 1007 South H Street, Tilton, died late ….rsday afternoon at the home of his daughter, death being due to …. Ity and followed by a long illness … had been practically an invalid since 191…..
Funeral services were held at the residence Friday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, in charge of Rev. A.F. deCafferly, pastor of the First Church of Christ. Burial will be in Canton, Mo. At one time the home of the deceased, his wife having been buried there a number of years ago. The body will leave over the Wabash railroad Saturday morning at 7:45 and funeral services will be held in the Missouri city Sunday.
Capt. Hedges was the father of eight children, two sons and six daughters. One son and five daughters survive, as follows: Rev. T.A. Hedges of Thomas, Okla; Mrs. Ida Cronkhite, Tilton; Mrs. Blanch Brown, Grenader, Miss; Mrs. Alice Firebaugh, Medaryville, Ind.; Mrs. Myrtle Denger, Orchard, Ia., and Mrs. Mattie Horn, Canton, Mo. He is also survived by two brothers, William R. Hedges, of Purdin, Mo. And Isaac A. Hedges, of Madera, Calif. Twenty-two grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Capt. Hedges was born in Fleming County, Ky. Jan. 29, 1831, being one of ten children of Mr. and Mrs. William R. Hedges. He grew to manhood in that county and united in Marriage with Miss Mary W. Vawter in 1857. When the civil war broke out he enlisted in the ….. Kentucky Volunteer …. And served until 1864 being discharged because of wounds received in the battle of Resaca, Ga. While serving under Sherman on the celebrated march to the sea.
Following his discharge from the Union army he came to Illinois, settling in Oakwood township in the fall of 1864, where he resided for 32 years, moving to Pulaski county, Ind. In 18 ….. After a residence of 12 years in Indiana the family moved to Canton, Mo., where the wife and mother died in 1912. Mr. Hedges came back to Illinois in 1922 and went to the home of his daughter in Tilton. He was a devout Christian and since he was 20 years old had been a member of the Church of Christ.

Capt. P.T. Hedges Dies In Illinois
Deceased Was Father of Rev. T.A. Hedges, Pastor of Christian Church.
Capt. P.T. Hedges, aged ninety-three years, five months and seven days, died at his home in Danville, Ill., Thursday of last week. He was a father of Rev. T.A. Hedges, pastor of the First Christian church of Thomas.
Rev. Hedges left here June the 10th and arrived in Danville at 1 p.m. the following day. His father knew him and conversed with his son regarding that he would be kept on the go to return to Thomas in time to preach the following Sunday. Mr. Hedges emphasized the fact that he wished his son to carry on his preaching, consequently when Mr. Hedges died the Rev. Hedges left Danville and arrived home Saturday and delivered a sermon Sunday morning at a joint meeting of Thomas and Hydro Christian churches which was held on Bear creek.
Rev. A.A. Hedges of Hydro occupied the pulpit of the local Christian church Sunday night.

Ogden, Ill., July 9—(Special) to the Courier-Herald)—Jackson Atkinson, an old and highly respected citizen of this place, died Saturday evening at 6 o'clock of pneumonia at the age of 79 years. The funeral was held at the Christian church Sunday afternoon at 4:30, conducted by Elder Morton of Fithian. The interment was at the (Old) Homer cemetery. The remains were taken by special car. He leaves six children to mourn his loss-Lafe and Corney Atkinson of Sidell, Mrs. Jennie Hedges of Missouri, Mrs. Ella Clark of Danville, Mrs. Lon Bartlett and Mathew Atkinson of this place.

Jackson Atkinson passed from this life at the family residence in Ogden Saturday evening, having reached the age of 79 years, 5 months and 21 days. Deceased was born in Monroe County, Ohio, Nov. 13, 1827, and was married to Mary Rush in 1853. After their marriage they moved to West Virginia where they resided twelve years, moving to Champaign county and Ogden township in 1865 where he had since resided.
His wife and four children preceded him to the grave. Six children, namely, Lafayette and Cornelius R. of Sidell; Mrs. T. A. Hedges of Lagranne, Mo., Mrs. Hugh Clark of Danville, Mrs. George Bartlett and Matthew Atkinson of Ogden, live to mourn the demise of their father, besides a number of other relatives.
The funeral services were conducted from the Christian church Sunday afternoon at 4:30 by Rev. Norton of Fithian. Interment took place at the Homer cemetery.
Mr. Atkinson, commonly called "Uncle Jack," will be greatly missed in Ogden and vicinity as he was a man of wide acquaintances and many friends. – Commercial News.
