    SOUTH BEND - Mary Alice Ellis, residing in South Bend, passed away at 8:43 a.m. Friday, April 6, 2018 at Memorial Hospital of South Bend. She was 91 years old. She was born Sept. 23, 1926 in Cheyenne, WY, a daughter of Jay Dean & Fannie Mae (Weber) McFarland, and has lived in South Bend since 1945, coming from Colorado.

    On June 17, 1951 at the First United Methodist Church, South Bend, as Mary Alice McFarland, she was united in marriage to the love of her life, Robert F. Ellis. They enjoyed 57 years of marriage until his passing on March 3, 2009. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Barry.

    Mary Alice is survived by her daughter, Diane (Arnie) Elmerick of Columbus, IN; her two sons, Ronald P. (Priscilla Davis) Ellis of Fort Worth, TX and Rick J. Ellis of Mishawaka, IN; and by Eldon & Darlene Watts of South Bend, who were just like a son and daughter to her. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Robin M. Elmerick, Christian (Michelle) Elmerick, and Courtney (Keenan) Lane; great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Cassidy, Matthew, and Zachary Elmerick, and Zabran Lane; and her niece, Barbara Mikkelson of CA.

    Mrs. Ellis was a longtime member of Grace United Methodist Church, its Chancel Choir, sang in a Ladies Quartet, and was a member of the United Methodist Women.

    She was also a member of the Presbyterian Players, member and Past President of Psi Iota Xi Sorority, and the China Painters Club. In more recent years, Mary Alice played with the Handbell Choir and sang in the choir at St. Paul's Retirement Community. She attended Colorado University and Indiana University at Bloomington.

    Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, at Grace United Methodist Church, 3012 S. Twyckenham Drive, South Bend. Rev. David Schrader will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Monday at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan Street, South Bend.
