O.H. Helms Takes Own Life At Home In Milan Monday
Came to Milan as Manager of the Purdin Mercantile Co. Store
Orville H. Helms, 36 years old, took his own life early Monday morning, Jan. 18, 1936, at his home here in Milan. Shortly after seven o’clock he stepped out on the back porch and shot himself in the head just above the right ear, with a 22 calibre rifle. His wife heard a noise which was probably made when he fell on the porch. Neighbors were called and carried him into the house; the Doctor was called by Mr. Helms died shorty after being taken in the house.
As far as can be ascertained ill health was a motive, as Mr. Helms had been in poor health for some time.
Mr. Helms formerly was manager of the Purdin Mercantile Store at Linneus and came to Milan about three months ago to take charge of their store here. Since coming to Milan he has made many friends who were shocked to hear of his death.
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, a three year old son and numerous other relatives and friends.
The parent of Mr. and Mrs. Helms came from Purdin Monday morning. The body was taken to Purdin that day.
Funeral services were held at the M.E. Church in Purdin Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock with burial in the Purdin cemetery.
