| 1551 | Everett Martin Dies At Age 82; Rites At Dixon Everett Martin, 82, of Dixon, Ill., died Thursday morning in a hospital in that city. He was a former Mt. Vernon resident. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday at Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Dixon. Burial will be in Chapel Hill cemetery. Mr. Martin was born Nov. 9, 1884, near Danville, Ill., the son of Charles and Sarah Martin. He was married to Mollie Munsell, who preceded him in death. He is survived by a son Ebbie Martin of Dixon; two half-brothers, John Crouch and Glenn Crouch, both of Bluford; three half sisters, Mrs. Wintress Shields of Bluford, Mrs. Evelyn Wiggins and Mrs. Etha Tate, both of Detroit, Mich.; and one grandchild. | 1552 | Ex-County Judge James Carey of Morehead died past week. He was aged 80. Was a Captain in the 24th Ky. Regiment commanded by Col. J.S. Hurt in the Civil War. Was Judge of Rowan County and was the father of Matt Carey who also was Judge of Rowan County. Was son-in-law of Major Mat Brain, former citizen of Farmers. | 1553 | Ex-Frankfort billiard hall owner dies at age 85 Frankfort – Austin Hockensmith, former owner and operator of Hockensmith’s Billiard Parlor, died Friday at King’s Daughters Memorial Hospital, apparently of complications from pneumonia. He was 85. Hockensmith ran the pool hall on St. Clair Street from before the Depression to the early 1960s. It was a popular gathering place, particularly during the Depression. Patrons knew it as Hock’s Pool Room. Hockensmith was also involved in real estate, including rental property. As a young man, he sold and repaired cars in Lexington. He lived at 307 Steele Street. He was an associate member of the Fraternal Order of Police and a member of South Frankfort Presbyterian Church. He was also an Army veteran. Hockensmith is survived by a daughter, Linda Moreland of Frankfort; a sister, Iva H. Read of Frankfort; a half-sister, Wavie Moore of Lexington; three half-brothers, Hugh and Arch Hockensmith, both of Frankfort, and Clyde Hockensmith of Detroit; six step-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren. | 1554 | Ex-Shreveporter Succumbs in N.O. Daniel Collier, a former Shreveport resident, died unexpectedly at his home in New Orleans Thursday. Funeral arrangement at Osborn Funeral Home here are incomplete. Mr. Collier was a member of the Episcopal church and the Sigma Alpha Epsilon social fraternity. He was the husband of the late Mary Cecile Collier of Shreveport. Other survivors include his mother, Mrs. Ella King Collier of New Orleans; one daughter, Eleanor Cecile Collier, a student at Louisiana State University; and one sister, Mrs. Hugh Whitaker of Venezuela. | 1557 | Ezra R Baldridge, 77, of Dry Creek Rd, Clearfield, died Wednesday evening, Nov. 11. He was born March 18, 1915 in Rowan County to the late Alex and Amanda Riddle Baldridge. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army, and was a farmer. His wife, Ocie Hyatt Baldridge preceded him in death on Aug. 8, 1986. Surviving are a son, Junior Baldridge of Morehead, a daughter, Judith Jennings of Anderson, Ind., two brothers, Charlie Baldridge of Clearfield and Harlie Baldridge of Plymouth, Ohio; two sisters Leona Lambert of Morehead and Olive Jones of Xenia, Ohio; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Graveside services were held Saturday at the Clearfield Cemetery with Judith Jennings officiating. Full military rites were conducted by the Morehead American Legion Post No. 126. | 1560 | Fairmount (CNS) - George Wilfred Hickman, 91, a retired farmer, died unexpectedly about 10 p.m. Friday (Jan. 11, 1963) in St. Elizabeth Hospital where he had been a patient three days. Born June 14, 1871 on the family homestead east of Fairmount, he was a son of Richard and Achsa Pruden Hickman. He lived his entire life on the farm. On Jan. 1, 1896 he married the former Sadie Hopper at Muncie. She died in 1904. Also preceding him in death were a son, four brothers and a sister. Survivors are three sons, Wilfred and Vernon of Fairmount and Wayne of Joliet. Also, 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. S. P. Smith of Olivet. The body is at the Carrington Funeral home, where friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday. Service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, with the Rev. Burton Heleine officiating. | 1561 | Fairmount (CNS) - Wilfred Hickman, 67, a life resident and prominent banker of the Fairmount community, died at 6:30 p.m. yesterday (May 27, 1964) at Lake View Memorial. He had been a patient there 10 days. Born Nov. 10,1896, he was the son of George W. and Sadie Hopper Hickman. He was married Oct. 5,1922, to Cena Gilkison, who survives. Mr. Hickman had formerly been cashier at the Porterfield State Bank in Ridgefarm and Sidell. Presently, he was cashier of the First National Bank of Fairmount where he had been employed since 1946. He was serving as treasurer of the Fairmount Grade School District, Jamaica Grade School District and the Village of Fairmount. He was a past master and treasurer of the Masonic Lodge 590. He also was a member of the Danville Scottish Rite and Danville Camera Club. Photography had been his hobby for several years. Other survivors include three daughters, Mrs. John (Janet) Figueras of Rochester, N.Y., Mrs. Lowell (Wilma) Kupfer of Cleveland, Ohio, and Mrs. Richard (Carol) Hinners of Franklin, Wis.; two brothers, Vernon of Fairmount and Wayne of Joliet; and nine grandchildren. He also was preceded in death by a brother. The body is at the Carrington Funeral Home. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. | 1562 | Fairmount – Harold R. Yeazel, 70, of Marion, Ind., formerly of Fairmount, died at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday (Nov. 15, 1988) at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Indianapolis. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Carrington Funeral Home, Fairmount, the Rev. Ed Brown officiating. Burial will be in the GAR Cemetery, Homer. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. EST Saturday at the Social Brethren Church, Marion, Ind. Visitation will be from 6 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home. Mr. Yeazel was born March 6, 1918, near Fairmount, a son of Rollie and Sophia Hedges Yeazel. He married Verniece Sylvester in 1940. He later married Mildred Stewart. Survivors include two sons, H. Gene Yeazel of Sidney and Robert A. Yeazel of St. Joseph; six grandchildren; a brother, Howard Yeazel of Catlin; a niece; and a nephew. Mr. Yeazel farmed in the Fairmount area until 1954. He then operated a construction and drainage business. For the past 25 years he was a chiropractor at Marion, Ind. He was a member of the Social Brethren Church at Marion, Ind., the Moose Lodge and the Fraternal Order of Police Benevolent Association. | 1563 | Fairmount, Ill. - Cena L. Hickman, 85, of Fairmount, died at 6 p.m. Sunday (April. 17, 1988) at Pleasant Meadows Christian Village in Chrisman. She was born Oct. 24, 1902, in Vermilion County, a daughter of William and Addie Cox Gilkison. She married Wilfred Hickman on Oct. 5, 1922. He died May 27, 1964. Survivors include: three daughters, Janet Cox Hickman of Rochester, N.Y., Wilma Kupfer of Euclid, Ohio; and Carol Hinners of East Troy, Wis.; 12 grandchildren, one great-grandson; three sisters, Miriam Hickman and Iris Davis, both of Catlin, and Dorothy Thielking of Crofton, Md. She also was preceded in death by two brothers. Mrs. Hickman was a 40-year member of the United Presbyterian Church in Fairmount and a former member of OES. She had worked as a secretary for the Fairmount Grade School and was the correspondent for the COMMERCIAL-NEWS for several years. | 1565 | Family Murdered Near Maysville - A family named Cobb, consisting of an old gentleman, his wife, and two sons, residing three miles from Maysville, Ky., on the Orangeburg turnpike, were murdered on Wednesday morning, for money. The old lady was not dead at last accounts. The murders obtained $200. Hundred of people were in pursuit of the suspected murderers, who were relatives of the deceased. | 1567 | Fannie Ehrhart Dies Saturday Aged Woman Succumbs Soon After Her Husband: Funeral Is Monday Fannie, Aged 73 years, widow of Samuel Ehrhart, died Saturday morning in the family home near Bearsdale, due chiefly to the infirmities of age. She and her husband were taken ill about the same time and his death occurred Sunday, March 16. She and Samuel Ehrhart had lived as husband and wife for 54 years and the shock of his death hastened her end. Four children survive her - Mrs. J. I. Keller, Harristown; Mrs. Walter Drew, Decatur; Charles Ehrhart, Mt. Vernon, and Frank Ehrhart, Bearsdale. Among her descendants are 18 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A homemaker, she was dedicated to her family. On December 7, 1946, in Covington, Kentucky she married Wallace B. "Wad" Fannin, who preceded her in death on March 22, 1993. She is survived by her son, Donald Fannin of Cincinnati; a daughter, Diana Retherford and her husband Donald "Woody" of Hamilton; three grandchildren, Chan Hubbard, Dustin Retherford, and Christian Fannin; a great-granddaughter, Chantia Hubbard; one brother, Harold Cook and his wife Mary of Florida; two sisters-in-law, Ruby Cook of Florida and Carolyn Bouten of Hamilton; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Johnson; granddaughter-in-law, Barbara Hopkins; and longtime dearest friend, Delmona Grafner of Hamilton. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two brothers, Eugene Cook and Donald Cook. Cassity, a young railway employee, whose death occurred at Omaha, Nebraska, from an injury received in a railroad accident Saturday, December 11, was brought to Brookfield Tuesday. The funeral took place from the home of his parents, 403 West Helm street, Wednesday at three o’clock, the service conducted by Rev. J.H. Stidham, pastor of the Church of Christ. The deceased was 36 years of age, son of J.W. Cassity, a Civil war veteran resident of this city, and grandson of the late Armstrong Cassity, a Grantsville township pioneer. Railroad extension, was kicked in the stomach by one of John Howard’s horses, from the effect of which he died last evening at the residence of Mr. Howard. Much credit is due William Murphy, the contractor on the work, of favors and kind attention shown the unfortunate man. The remains will be taken to Indianapolis this evening for burial. | 1574 | Fatal One-Car Wreck Is Third In Three Days. David Hedges, 34, of 1830 McCullough Drive, died yesterday morning of head injuries suffered in an accident late Monday on Russell Cave Road near Radcliffe Road. Police said Hedges apparently lost control of his car and hit a tree about 10:30 p.m. Monday. He was alone in the car. His death was the third fatality in one-car accidents in three days. Jerry Wayne Gill, 32 died Sunday after his car hit a tree on Iron Works Pike. Ricky Barnett, 21, died of head injuries suffered Sunday when he was involved in a one-car accident on Armstrong Mill Road. Hedges, a former construction worker, was a member of the East Hickman Baptist Church. A native of Lexington, he was the son of Mrs. Sarah Sharp Hedges Haynes and the late Stanley Hedges. Other survivors include three children, Dorothy Denise, Melvin David and Gregory Alan Hedges, all of Frankfort; one brother, Stanley Hedges Jr., Lexington, and two sisters, Mrs. Marjorie Steele, Lexington, and Mrs. Walter S. | 1575 | Fatally Burned Monday Morning Mrs. Lydia Seals Died From Burns of an Oil Stove Explosion. Mrs. Lydia Seals, sister-in-law of Mrs. Eva Helms of this city, was fatally burned at her home in Purdin, Monday morning. Mrs. Seals was in the kitchen when an oil stove exploded, the flames of which ignited her clothing and hair. She was taken in an unconscious condition to the McLarney hospital in Brookfield where death occurred at 12 o’clock. Arrangements for the funeral to be held Thursday afternoon are under the direction of the Chaney Funeral Home of Milan. Burial will be made in the family lot in the Milan cemetery. Mrs. Seals is survived by a brother, Dr. Pomps Helms of Eugene, Ore., a former resident of this city. Her brothers, Wallace Helms and Ed Helms, preceded her in death. Her husband died eight years ago. Mrs. Seals, who was 70 years old, made her home with her sister-in-law, Mrs. Lula Helms in Purdin. At the time of the accident Monday, Mrs. Helms was in the garden. | 1576 | Father of Mrs. Redden Succumbs in Phoenix James Hollis Gibbs, father of Mrs. Elsie Redden of this city, died in Phoenix Jan. 2. Mr. Gibbs was born in Rowan County, Kentucky, in 1857 and has lived in Arizona for the past 13 years. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Elsie Redden, Casa Grande; Mrs. Maude Shultz, Beckley, W.Va.; Mrs. Cora Kittle f Ashland, Ky.; also five sons, Kelly D. Douglas and Barbara Felt. Gene Felt was raised in Franklin, PA, son of the late Dr. Constantine T. Felt and Daisy (Curry) Felt, brother of the late Howard E. Felt and the late Miriam (Felt) Acheson. In 1924, Gene Felt graduated with a Business Degree from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. He represented the petroleum industry in Tulsa, OK and Indianapolis, IN until he and his wife moved to Centralia, IL in 1938 to form Universal Butane Co. which supplied LP gas to oil fields and the domestic market. In 1953, he and his family moved to St. Louis, MO. Gene Felt will be fondly remembered for his honesty, generosity, fairness and faithful practice to the Golden Rule. | 1580 | Fern Hedges The death of Fern Hedges occurred Saturday afternoon after a short illness, pneumonia developing very suddenly from a cold that was not thought serious, though all that science, careful nursing and loving attention could do was done, naught availed. The funeral took place from the Methodist Church Sunday afternoon, a very touching feature of the services being the singing of the little girl’s favorite song by fifteen members of her Sunday School class. Interment was in the new cemetery, the large funeral cortege and beautiful flowers showing the respect in which the parents are held. The little girl, who was twelve years old, was the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P.T. Hedges and besides her parents leaves one brother, to whom The Enterprise extends sympathy. | 1589 | FINK, Dr. Philip H., 80, of Tampa, went to be with the Lord on August 5, 2015 after a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joyce McGrew Fink; three daughters, Lory Schieler (Stu), Jody Hancock (Jay), and Julie Robbins (Brian); and four grandchildren, Lindsey and Amy Hancock, Jessica and Tel Schieler. Dr. Fink was principal cellist with the Miami Philharmonic (15 years) and the Miami Opera Orchestra (10 years). He served on the faculties of Miami-Dade Community College (1966-72) and Florida International University (1972-94) where he was Chairman of the Music and Fine Arts Departments, respectively, and where he played a major role in the development of the music pro-grams at these institutions. He was past president of the Florida Orchestra Association and Florida String Teachers Association. Dr. Fink was listed as one of five outstanding orchestra arrangers in the country (The Instrumentalist) and many of his arrangements have been published by Columbia Pictures Publications. Dr. Fink also served as the Music Director at Old Cutler Presbyterian Church in Miami for over 25 years. His home, at 803 Sadie-st, burned down, and the fire department made such a clatter going there that people wondered what had happened. Well, that’s about all there is to it, so far as Ernest Hedges is concerned. The oil stove exploded, and the two-room frame house he built with his own trained hands from lumber he salvaged burned to the ground. Two suits were burned, too, and in the pocket of one of them was “410, his total savings since last January and his only cash laid away against the coming winter. Two hundred cans of food he grew in his garden this summer and canned himself over that perfidious oil stove also exploded and were ruined. That was the food he had against the winter. Ernest Hedges is 37. He is the father of three children, two of whom are ill with tuberculosis in Sunnyside Sanatorium. The other, Robert, 4, lives next door at 823 Sadie-st with Mrs. Sarah Eaker, his grandmother. Mrs. Eaker is the mother of Mrs. Hedges who died of tuberculosis 10 months ago, after Ernest, a carpenter before the depression, had finally constructed the little house that burned today and had hoped that in it she would regain her health. Then Pearly, 5, and Joan, 2, became ill and were taken to the sanatorium. Then Ernest lost his FERA job and had to give up Robert. He has a horse and with that plowed the gardens, hauled ashes and did odd jobs and made enough money to support himself, and miraculously to save some. It was while he ws trying to catch the horse in the pasture today that the stove exploded and burned his home. Firemen save the home of the horse, a shed on the rear of the lot. While the ruins still smouldered, and lines of smoke wove through the crumpled steel bestead, Ernest hedges took a stoical look and went off to find a place to stay until – Well, no one thought to ask him until what?
