Mr. Zehndner, who had lived in Menlo Park since 1923, was a night maintenance man for Golden State Creamery on Willow Rd. He was born in Arcata, Calif. He was a member of Palo Alto Elks Lodge 1471 and the Live Oak Lodge 271, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, of Palo Alto. Survivors include his wife, Julia Irene; a daughter, Mrs. Dorotha Dick of Menlo Park; two brothers, Edward Zehndner of Arcata and Theodore Zehndner of Santa Cruz; a sister, Mrs. Louise McClaskey of Arcata; and two granddaughters, Mrs. Hal Cram of Sacramento and Mrs. Charles Flockhart of Blue Lake, Calif. She graduated from Cy-Fair High in 1947 and Jefferson Davis School of Nursing in 1951. Deena loved nursing and continued volunteering at Memorial Hermann Northwest after her retirement where she was known as the "cookie lady". She enjoyed sewing, gardening and cooking which she shared with others. She is survived by two daughters, Gina Housh and Laurie Housh Gardner and husband Rick Gardner and numerous other relatives and friends. The family will greet friends 6-8 P.M. 1706 | Gerald F. Hedges Dies of Pneumonia in Home Gerald F. Hedges, 21 years old, 925 North Tacoma avenue, died yesterday in his home of pneumonia after an illness of two days. Mr. Hedges was born in Connersville March 28, 1914, and came to Indianapolis eight years ago. He attended Arsenal Technical High School and was a member of Delta Phi Theta fraternity. He also was a member of the East Tenth Street M.E. Church. Funeral services will be held at 10 o’clock tomorrow morning in the home and at 1 o’clock tomorrow afternoon at the Connersville cemetery. He was born April 6, 1935 in New Castle, Indiana, a son of the late Arthur Virgil Kissick and Hazel Olliemae (Sparks) Kissick. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in Germany & China. Gerald was married to Violet Ruth (Denney) Kissick on July 8, 1969. A used car salesman, he owned Kissick’s Used Cars in New Castle where he also was a barber. He loved spending time with his family, playing and watching basketball, traveling to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, finding money and working outdoors. Gerald is survived by his wife of 51 years, Violet Ruth (Denney) Kissick; a daughter Allison (Dave) McClure of New Castle; granddaughters Audra and Claire McClure; step sister Esther (Brent) Furbee of Fishers; sisters-in-law Marilyn Kissick and Mary Kay Razor, both of New Castle, and several special cousins, nieces, nephews and special friends including, Linda Ross, Brooks & Beverly Muncy and Gary Marcum. 1711 | Gerhard J. Nygaard, 90 Gerhard J. Nygaard, 90, of Northfield, Minn., formerly of Blair, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2015, at the Northfield Retirement Community. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, at the chapel of the Northfield Retirement Community. Burial will be in Willow Creek Danish Cemetery, Royal, Iowa. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Benson & Langehough Funeral Home and on Thursday at the NRC chapel one hour prior to services. Gerhard J. Nygaard was born Sept. 22, 1924, at Winnetoon, the son of Nels and Carrie Nygaard. He attended high school at Royal, Kennard and Blair, graduating from Blair in 1942. He worked for a Blair attorney and on his father's farm until December 1943, when he was inducted into the U.S. Navy. He was transferred to the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Md., where he graduated as an x-ray technician. After being discharged in June 1946, he attended Dana College for four years. He then entered Trinity Seminary at Blair and graduated in 1953. He was married to Betty Jensen of Spencer, Iowa, on May 30, 1952. Their first parish was a home mission congregation in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. The second parish was two congregations in the Cushing-Luck, Wis. area. During the summers of 1963 and 1964, Gerhard took courses in the field of aging at Augsburg College, Minneapolis. In 1964, his family moved to Bowman, N.D., where he was administrator-chaplain of Sunset Nursing Home. They moved again and he worked 20 years for the Northfield Retirement Center. He retired in 1989. Gerhard served as secretary and as president of the Northfield Rotary Club, president of the Northfield Seniors and of St. Peter's Senior Fellowship. In 1990, he was named an honorary member of the Minnesota Association of Homes for the Aging. He is survived by his daughters: Linda of Northfield, Debra (Harvey Meyer) of Minneapolis, Sandra Skura of Woodbury, Minn., and Lisa of Northfield; two grandchildren: Megan Launer of San Francisco and Thomas Launer of Ethiopia; sister-in-law Eva Nygaard of Owatonna, Minn.; brothers-in-law: Fred Jensen of Willmar, Minn., and Dale Hill of Milton, Pa.; many nieces and nephews, other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one brother, four sisters and twin daughters. Memorials may go to the Northfield Retirement Center Foundation. Armstrong in 1930 at Secor. She died in 1934. He married Gladys E. Burdge in 1940. She died in 1972. Surviving are a son, Erby, rural Roanoke; two daughters, Vaunice Handell, Indianapolis, Ind., and Genevieve Arnold, Rushville; a brother, Cecil, Brookfield, Mo.; two sisters, Josie Blunt, Brookfield, Mo., and Sarah Acree, Reedley, Calif.; seven grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. Glen enjoyed horseracing, gambling at casinos, and was proud to be a contestant on the Hoosier Millionaire. He also enjoyed camping and fishing. 1746 | Godfrey H. Hunt. Godfrey Harrison Hunt "Harry" Hunt, 76, of South Shore died at 6:10 p.m. Monday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Arthur Miller of South Shore. Mr. Hunt had suffered from a long illness. He was a retired farmer. Mr. Hunt was born in Walsh, Ky, Feb. 19, 1877, a son of Taylor and Louise Nippert Hunt. During 1899, he married Nellie Agnes Harr, who died in 1947. Their seven children live in South Shore. They are Richard, Clarence, Raymond, Morris and Kenneth Hunt, Mrs. Lucille Miller and Mrs. Mabel Sammons. A brother, T.A. Hunt, makes his home in South Charleston, W.Va. Preceding Mr. Hunt in death were his wife, parents, and two infant daughters. Seventeen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren survive. 1747 | Goes To Trial On Grave Charge Indianapolis man, Earl Eaker, is defendant other court news Earl Eaker was on trial today before Judge O’Harrow on the grave charge of reckless homicide while under the influence of intoxicants. The case grew out of a fatal crash near the Sedwick place east of Monrovia the night of July 21, 1941. Eaker was arrested on a grand jury indictment. It was charged that while under the influence of liquor he drove his car recklessly and while going to high speed he crashed into a tree. His wife, Laverne Eaker, and his half-brother, Ernest Hedges was killed in the wreck. The parties were all from Indianapolis. Prosecutor Foley represents the state in the trial and Attorney Gilbert Butler appears for the defendant. It was expected that the case would be concluded during the day.
