| 1901 | GRANBURY - Louis L. Wright, a retired divisional special agent for Rock Island Railroad, died Sunday at a Granbury hospital. He was 92. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Laurel Land Memorial Park in Fort Worth. Laurel Land Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Wright was born in Medford, Okla., and had lived in Granbury for five months. He was a former Fort Worth resident. He worked for the railroad for 39 years before his retirement in 1963. Mr. Wright was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Medford Masonic Lodge 108, Scottish Rite and Moslah Shrine Temple. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, bowling and watching television. His wife, Florence Wright, died in 1977. Survivors: Two sons, Richard Wright of Granbury and Harry Tweedy of Fort Worth; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. | 1902 | Grant County Has First Paralysis Case Special to the Courier-Journal Williamstown, Ky., Aug. 21 – The first case of infantile paralysis in Grant County was reported at Dry Ridge. Mary Dean Hedges, 15, was stricken ill Friday and her case was diagnosed as infantile paralysis last night. Physicians report her condition serious, the entire body being paralyzed. | 1903 | Graves S. Brendel. Graves S. Brendel, a retired telegraph operator of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, died at 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon at Maryland General Hospital of heart trouble. Mr. Brendel lived at 508 North Carrollton avenue. He was born September 19, 1847, at Middletown, Md., and had been living in Baltimore 26 years. Mr. Brendel had been in the service of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad 48 years and started as a messenger boy in Frederick City. He learned to operate when quite young and had some thrilling experience during the Civil War. He is survived by a widow, who was before her married Miss Catherine E. Derr, of Baltimore, and one son, Reginald L. Brendel. He also leaves a brother, Charles Brendel, of Grafton, W.Va., and two sisters, Miss Mary Brendel and Mrs. Anna A. Gray, of Hagerstown. | 1904 | Graveside funeral services will be held in the West Side District Cemetery on Tuesday at 3 p.m. for longtime Taft resident Ethel M. Jaggers, 85. The pastor of the Taft Heights Assembly of God, will officiate at the services. Mrs. Jaggers was born in Kolida, Ohio on April 26, 1908, and passed away in a nursing home in Bakersfield on Friday afternoon, July 16, 1993. She moved to Taft with her family in 1911. She was raised on and lived most of her life on 25 Hill. Mrs. Jaggers was educated in Taft Schools. She was a very active member of the Taft Heights Assembly of God Church. Mrs. Jaggers was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Jaggers, in December of 1980. Her survivors include her son and his wife, her granddaughters, and by several great grandchildren. | 1905 | Graveside Rites Saturday for Leslie C. Moore Graveside services will be conducted Saturday in San Bruno for Leslie Clyde Moore, 82, who died Saturday in a local hospital. The services will be at 10:30 a.m. at the Golden Gate National cemetery with the Rev. Lauren Lundblad officiating. Wessendorts and Thal chapel is in charge of arrangements. Moore, a native of Missouri, came to this area from Santa Rosa in 1948 and made his home at 217-Third avenue. He served in the Canadian Expeditionary force during World War I. | 1906 | Graveside Services Held for Mrs. Cassity Graveside services were held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Fairlawn Cemetery Tuttle for Mrs. Loula Hartin Cassity. Brother Lewis Gibbs officiated. She was born June 3, 1869 and died in Santa Ana, Calif., May 23, 1954. Mrs. Cassity was a former Tuttle resident and it was her desire and request to be laid to rest in the Tuttle cemetery where she would be surrounded by her relatives and friends. She was a sister to the late J.L. and Walter Hartin. Survivors are her three sisters, Mrs. O.D. Hoff, passed quietly away, at her home near Clintonville, this county, on the night of the 31st ult. She had been a great sufferer for many months. Though provided with the best medical aid the hand of that unwelcome visitor could no longer be stayed. Mrs. Hoff was of cheerful disposition, a good business woman and noted for economy. She was born at Locust Bottom, Botetourte county, Va., on the 28th day of January, 1829. Was, therefore, in her 68 year. Was married Sept. 26th, 1849. She was the mother of twelve children, ten of whom survived her, and, with an aged and feeble father, they mourn their loss. She connected herself with the M. E. Church, South, when quite young, but never had her membership transferred from her native county. She often expressed her willingness to give up this life of pain that she might bask in the sunlight of the eternal city. He was a member of the Methodist Church. Survivors include four other daughters, Mrs. Ralph Keavney of Rainelle, Mrs. Arthur Rosewell of Gauley Bridge, Mrs. Olen Jennings of Athens, and Mrs. Olen Hight of Interstation, Fla.; three sons, Fred of White Sulphur Springs and Ralph and Elvan, both of Quinwood; 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Mr. Johnson, who had resided in this vicinity before removing to Missouri, returned here about a year ago. He is survived by his wife and several cousins. | 1912 | Grim Reaper Forrest Clester Forrest J. Clester of Greensburg, R.D.5, died Friday morning in the Veterans’ Administration Hospital at Oakland, Pittsburgh. He was born at Broadland, Ill., a son of the late Charles A. and Lottie Hedges Clester, and was an employe of the Elliott Company in Jeannette. A member of the Christian Missionary Alliance Church of Greensburg, he also belonged to the American Legion, Post 981 of South Greensburg. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Wilda King Clester; three children, Linda Lee of Torrance, Calif., David Bruce and Forrest J. Jr. at home; a stepdaughter, Cherrie Fisher at home, and a brother, Gale A. | 1913 | Grizelle Wheeler Cassity was born in Marion County, Kentucky, Feb. 20, 1846 and removed with her parents to Hold County, Mo., when about five years of age. In 1958 her father, Lawrence R. Wheeler, moved with his family to Nemaha county, Kansas, and settled on a farm about four miles south of Sabetha, on what is now known as the Kenreigh farm. There the deceased spent her happy girlhood days and grew to womanhood. In 1962 she was married to martin P.M. Cassity, and removed to Wetmore, Kansas. Three children were born of this marriage, George M., Mary and Galen E., respectively. The daughter, Mary, died at the age of two years and was buried in the Wetmore cemetery. Her two sons still survive her. Geo. M. is a grain dealer and resides at Tonkawa, Okla. Galen E. is a practicing attorney resided in Kansas City, Mo. Her marriage was not a happy one, and as a result of it she separated from Mr. Cassity in the Spring of 1882, and removed to a farm near Bern, Kansas, where her boys grew to manhood. She claimed Bern as her home until the fall of 1901, when she went to El Reno, Okla., and there spent the winter with her sister, Mrs. Mary H. Magill. In the following spring she took up her abode with her son, G.E. Cassity at Hobart, Okla., and there remained with him until he removed to Kansas City, Mo. Her last illness, which extended over a period of 8 months, was attended with great suffering at times, but her death seemed like a peaceful dream, a gradual sinking into a deep slumber, from which there is no earthly awakening. Aside from her two sons, she is survived by her two sisters, Mrs. Alice Wise of Stillwater, Okla., and Mrs. Mary H. Magill, of Long Beach, Cal., and her father L.R. Wheeler, also of Long Beach. The funeral services were conducted by Dr. W.F. Richardson, of the First Christian Church of Kansas City, and the remains were interred in Mt. Washington Cemetery on Monday Sept. 4th. | 1919 | Guitarist Hedges dies in auto accident By Martha Irvine, Associated Press Writer San Francisco – Michael Hedges, an acoustic guitarist and composer known for his unusual two-handed picking style, was killed in an automobile crash. He was 43. Hedges died in a one-car crash on State Route 128 in rural Medocino County about 100 miles northwest of San Francisco, California Highway Patrol Officer Bob Burke said Wednesday. A work crew discovered the guitarist’s body in his wrecked 1986 TMW Tuesday morning. Burke said it appeared Hedges’ car skidded off a curve and down a steep embankment a few days earlier. Know for innovations such as simultaneously picking both ends of the guitar, the Grammy nominee described his own music as “heavy mental,” “acoustic thrash” and “new edge.” In the early 1980s, he helped establish the Windham Hill label with his albums “Breakfast in the Field” (1983) and “Aerial Boundaries” (1984). He also collaborated with such musicians as bassist Michael Manring, guitarist Dweezil Zappa and Crosby, Still & Nash. “He was a great friend and one of the most brilliant musicians in America,” David Crosby said Wednesday from his Southern California home. A native of Enid, Okla., Hedges’ early interest in the guitar and flute led him to study classical guitar at Phillips University in Enid. He eventually earned a degree in composition from the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. He also studied electronic music at Stanford University, where he met Windham Hill co-founder and guitarist Will Ackerman. “Michael tore my head off,” Ackerman once said of Hedges’ playing. “It was like watching the guitar being reinvented.” In recent years, Hedges lived in Medocino, recording in his Naked Ear Music studio. There he incorporated vocals into albums such as “Taproot” (1990) and “The Road to Return” (1993), but had returned to instrumentals in his most recent album, “Oracle”. | 1920 | Gustiva Hyatt Masters, 92, of Fleming County, concluded a life of family and community Tuesday, December 6, 2011 after brief illness at the Fleming County Hospital Mrs. Masters was born in Rowan County April 18, 1919, the daughter of William "Minn" and Lucy McKee Hyatt, An educator, she began teaching in a one room school in Rowan County. After moving to Fleming County, she taught 4th grade at Flemingsburg Elementary for 28 years, from 1960 eventually retiring in 1988. An active member of the community she was in Fleming County Homemakers and served many years as a 4-H leader. She attended Flemingsburg Baptist Church. Gussie is survived by two sons, Dan (Bettye) Masters and Charlie (Rose Ann) Masters, also of Fleming County: Two grandsons, John (Francie) Masters of Lexington and Marc (Danielle) Masters of Flemingsburg. Three great - grandchildren, Jud Masters, Evelyn Masters, and Madison Dodgen, along with several nieces and nephews. Preceding Mrs. Masters in death was her husband of 63 years, John Master, an infant son, a sister, Thelma Graham, and two brothers William Hyatt Jr. and Bob Hyatt Funeral services will be at 2 PM Sunday December 11, 2011 at Boone - Nickell Funeral Home with Pastor Kevin Cornette officiating. | 1922 | Gwendolyn Randel Gwendolyn Randel, 81, Frankfort, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, at Frankfort Community Care Home. Services were at 10 a.m. Tuesday from the Padden Funeral Chapel, Frankfort. Officiant was the Rev. Susan Montgomery. Soloist was Lorene Shearer, who sang There Will Be Pease in the Valley and The Old Rugged Cross. Organist was Eunice Samuelson. Pallbearers were Stephen Randel, Eldon Randel, Rony Randel, John Randel, Dennis Randel, Mike Randel and Gale Randel. Burial was in the American City Cemetery southwest of Corning. She lived in Frankfort since 1951. She worked in maintenance at Frankfort Grade School. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Frankfort and the United Methodist Women. She married Ray Randel Jan. 6, 1940. He died Dec. 27, 1987. Also preceding her in death were a sister, Fern Murdock, and a brother, Floyd Cassity. He was preceded in death by his parents. Gene served in the U.S. Army Reserves for six years. He was an insurance producer for 31 years for Country Companies in the Homer/Sidney area. After retiring from insurance, he worked in real estate for six years. He was a member of Sidney Lion's Club and was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Free Mason. He loved taking long drives and traveling with his wife and children; he especially enjoyed San Belle Island in Florida. As a young man, he was a great trumpet player; he played taps at many Memorial Day celebrations and local military rites and also played in dance bands. He played football for Jamaica during the team's undefeated season in 1959. Harold Clifford Walters was born on a farm near Wetmore, Kansas, November 20, 1914 the eldest of three children, the son of Bert Walters and Nettie (Cassity) Walters. He was raised and educated in the Wetmore area attending a one-room schoolhouse through the eighth grade then graduating from Wetmore High School. Harold then went on to Kansas State University earning a degree in Industrial Chemistry. After graduating college, he was employed with the Phillips Petroleum Company and moved to Bartlesville. Harold's 39-year career with Phillips from 1938 until his retirement in1978 was with the Research and Development department. Mr. Harold Clifford Walters and Dorothy Jean St. Clair were united in marriage on September 19, 1942. In 1944, they made their home in Borger, Texas where their two children, Nancy and Neil, were born. He was associated with the Phillips Philtex Plant until 1951 when they returned to Bartlesville. Mrs. Walters preceded him in death in November 1989. The first years of his career were devoted to the formulation of aviation gasolines. Improvements in the quality and quantity of aviation gasoline were required in order to meet the demands of the war effort. After returning to Bartlesville in 1951, he was involved with research to improve the quality of automotive gasoline, lubricating oils and greases. The last ten years of his career were spent at pilot plant work where processes for the production of specialty products were evaluated. Harold's hobbies included golf, bowling, fishing, hunting, collecting stamps, bridge and playing pool. After their retirement, they took up square dancing and traveled for several years. Harold was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bartlesville and was the past president of the Tuxedo Lyons Club. He was a member of Kiwanis International and a past member of Reels & Wheels RV club and enjoyed time spent at the 55+ Activity Center. Lawton, 62, former operator of a San Rafael newspaper subscription service, who was killed Friday when his car crashed into a tree on Highway 12 east of Santa Rosa. The services will be at 11:30 a.m. at Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, with the Rev. Edwin Taylor, Santa Rosa, retired member of the Salvation Army, officiating. Mr. Lawton moved to Santa Rosa from San Rafael just recently. He lived at 517 Santa Rosa ave. He is survived by his son, Harry W. Lawton Jr., Arlington, and his sister, Mrs. Robert Huff, Westwood. | 1950 | Harry Lee Jeffers Frankfort – Services for Harry Lee Jeffers, 82, who died Sunday afternoon at Capitol Manor Nursing Home here after a long illness, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Rogers Chapel by the Rev. John C. Chenault. Burial will be in Frankfort Cemetery. A native of Frankfort, he was a long-time employe of Frankfort Builders and Supply Co., and after retirement with this firm he served several years as an inspector with the State Highway Department. His home was at 309 West Fourth Street and he was a member of the First Christian Church. His wife, Mrs. Blanche Evans Jeffers, died April 30 of this year.
