| 1902 | Eunice Jacobs, 77 Muncie – Eunice Jacobs, age 77, died Monday, March 12, 2001, in Ball Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. Mrs. Jacobs was born in Morehead, Ky., and lived most of her life in Muncie. She was a member of the Avondale Sympathy Club. She leaves a special niece and caregiver, Lavonne Bell (husband: Doyle), and their children, Karen Simmons (husband: Matt), Muncie, and Steve Bell (friend: Nancy), Eaton. Also surviving are a sister, Vada Phillips, Mundelein, Ill.; a brother, Cleve Estep, Mansfield, Ohio, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Merlin M. Jacobs, in 1993; her parents, Peyton and Myrtie Estep; three brothers, and one sister. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 15, in Elm Ridge Funeral Home. | 1903 | Eva C. Hedges formerly of 1021 N Market St., Frederick, and more recently a guest at Meridian Nursing Home, Frederick, died Friday, May 16 at nursing home. She was the wife of David I. Hoke. Born Jan.18, 1892, near Walkersville, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Alice Erb Hedges. Mrs. Hoke was a member of Glade United Church of Walkersville. She was a charter member of the Glade Valley Grange. Besides her she is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Teresa Hoke, Walkersville; two granddaughters, Emily Roberts, Greenville, S.C., and Margaret Know, Lido Beach, N. Y.; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Glenn Hedges, Lagrangeville, N.Y.; one sister Margaret Hahn of Frederick. Friends may call at the Stauffer Funeral 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. May 19. The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Monday, at the funeral home. Evelyn worked as a secretary for Granite City Steel Company in Granite City, Illinois for 19 years until her retirement. She was a Charter member of the Suburban Baptist Church in Granite City, Illinois and held various positions in the church. After her marriage to Lee Galbraith, she became a member of Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church in Urbana, Illinois and was involved in their Senior Citizen Ministry. Survivors include one son, George Smith and wife, Kristine Gamm/Smith of Granite City, Illinois; one daughter, Sandra Simmons and husband, Randy of Peach Tree Corners, Georgia; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and one sister, Delores Jacobs of Brookfield. | 1911 | Everett E. (Bud) Neely Passed Away July 18, In Kirksville Everett E. (Bud) Neely, son of Norman B. and Henrietta (Cassity) Neely, was born near Milan, Missouri March 13, 1880, and died in a Kirksville hospital, July 28, 1964. He had been hospitalized the past nine weeks. He was united in marriage to Gracie Clifton in January of 1910. Nine children were born to this marriage. Surviving are three sons: Alvin, of Green Castle; Delman,, of Colona, Illinois; and Norman, of Silvis, Illinois; six daughters: Mrs. Roy (Mildred) Casey, Novinger; Mrs. Genave Scoonover, Silvis, Illinois; Mrs. Oma Wren, East Moline, Illinois; Mrs. Robert (Elveta) Dolan, Silvis, Illinois; Mrs. Richard (Helen Baker, East Moline, Illinois; and Mrs. Charles (Imogene) Bell, Novinger; thirty-one grandchildren, thirty-four great grandchildren, two brothers: Emery N. Neely and Ray Neely, both of Brookfield; six sister, Mrs. Lloyd (Nellie) Owen, Brookfield; Mrs. Addie Gatlin and Mrs. Elfie McCoy, both of Kansas City, Mo.; Mrs. Victoria Engleman, Chillicothe; Mrs. Eunice Freeman and Mrs. Edith McCoy both of Maryville, California. He was preceded in death by his wife on April 6, 1947, two brothers and two sisters, one grandson and four great grandchildren. | 1921 | Ex-Frankfort billiard hall owner dies at age 85 Frankfort – Austin Hockensmith, former owner and operator of Hockensmith’s Billiard Parlor, died Friday at King’s Daughters Memorial Hospital, apparently of complications from pneumonia. He was 85. Hockensmith ran the pool hall on St. Clair Street from before the Depression to the early 1960s. It was a popular gathering place, particularly during the Depression. Patrons knew it as Hock’s Pool Room. Hockensmith was also involved in real estate, including rental property. As a young man, he sold and repaired cars in Lexington. He lived at 307 Steele Street. He was an associate member of the Fraternal Order of Police and a member of South Frankfort Presbyterian Church. He was also an Army veteran. Hockensmith is survived by a daughter, Linda Moreland of Frankfort; a sister, Iva H. Read of Frankfort; a half-sister, Wavie Moore of Lexington; three half-brothers, Hugh and Arch Hockensmith, both of Frankfort, and Clyde Hockensmith of Detroit; six step-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren. He was the husband of the late Mary Cecile Collier of Shreveport. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army, and was a farmer. His wife, Ocie Hyatt Baldridge preceded him in death on Aug. 8, 1986. Surviving are a son, Junior Baldridge of Morehead, a daughter, Judith Jennings of Anderson, Ind., two brothers, Charlie Baldridge of Clearfield and Harlie Baldridge of Plymouth, Ohio; two sisters Leona Lambert of Morehead and Olive Jones of Xenia, Ohio; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. | 1928 | Fairmount (CNS) - George Wilfred Hickman, 91, a retired farmer, died unexpectedly about 10 p.m. Friday (Jan. 11, 1963) in St. Elizabeth Hospital where he had been a patient three days. Born June 14, 1871 on the family homestead east of Fairmount, he was a son of Richard and Achsa Pruden Hickman. He lived his entire life on the farm. On Jan. 1, 1896 he married the former Sadie Hopper at Muncie. She died in 1904. Also preceding him in death were a son, four brothers and a sister. Survivors are three sons, Wilfred and Vernon of Fairmount and Wayne of Joliet. Also, 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. S. P. Smith of Olivet. The body is at the Carrington Funeral home, where friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday. Service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, with the Rev. Burton Heleine officiating. | 1929 | Fairmount (CNS) - Wilfred Hickman, 67, a life resident and prominent banker of the Fairmount community, died at 6:30 p.m. yesterday (May 27, 1964) at Lake View Memorial. He had been a patient there 10 days. Born Nov. 10,1896, he was the son of George W. and Sadie Hopper Hickman. He was married Oct. 5,1922, to Cena Gilkison, who survives. Mr. Hickman had formerly been cashier at the Porterfield State Bank in Ridgefarm and Sidell. Presently, he was cashier of the First National Bank of Fairmount where he had been employed since 1946. He was serving as treasurer of the Fairmount Grade School District, Jamaica Grade School District and the Village of Fairmount. He was a past master and treasurer of the Masonic Lodge 590. He also was a member of the Danville Scottish Rite and Danville Camera Club. Photography had been his hobby for several years. Other survivors include three daughters, Mrs. John (Janet) Figueras of Rochester, N.Y., Mrs. Lowell (Wilma) Kupfer of Cleveland, Ohio, and Mrs. Richard (Carol) Hinners of Franklin, Wis.; two brothers, Vernon of Fairmount and Wayne of Joliet; and nine grandchildren. He also was preceded in death by a brother. The body is at the Carrington Funeral Home. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Carrington Funeral Home, Fairmount, the Rev. Ed Brown officiating. Burial will be in the GAR Cemetery, Homer. Mr. Yeazel was born March 6, 1918, near Fairmount, a son of Rollie and Sophia Hedges Yeazel. He married Verniece Sylvester in 1940. He later married Mildred Stewart. Survivors include two sons, H. Gene Yeazel of Sidney and Robert A. Yeazel of St. Joseph; six grandchildren; a brother, Howard Yeazel of Catlin; a niece; and a nephew. Mr. Yeazel farmed in the Fairmount area until 1954. She was born Oct. 24, 1902, in Vermilion County, a daughter of William and Addie Cox Gilkison. She married Wilfred Hickman on Oct. 5, 1922. He died May 27, 1964. Survivors include: three daughters, Janet Cox Hickman of Rochester, N.Y., Wilma Kupfer of Euclid, Ohio; and Carol Hinners of East Troy, Wis.; 12 grandchildren, one great-grandson; three sisters, Miriam Hickman and Iris Davis, both of Catlin, and Dorothy Thielking of Crofton, Md. She also was preceded in death by two brothers. Mrs. Hickman was a 40-year member of the United Presbyterian Church in Fairmount and a former member of OES. She had worked as a secretary for the Fairmount Grade School and was the correspondent for the COMMERCIAL-NEWS for several years. | 1933 | Family Murdered Near Maysville - A family named Cobb, consisting of an old gentleman, his wife, and two sons, residing three miles from Maysville, Ky., on the Orangeburg turnpike, were murdered on Wednesday morning, for money. The old lady was not dead at last accounts. The murders obtained $200. Hundred of people were in pursuit of the suspected murderers, who were relatives of the deceased. | 1936 | Fannie Ehrhart Dies Saturday Aged Woman Succumbs Soon After Her Husband: Funeral Is Monday Fannie, Aged 73 years, widow of Samuel Ehrhart, died Saturday morning in the family home near Bearsdale, due chiefly to the infirmities of age. She and her husband were taken ill about the same time and his death occurred Sunday, March 16. She and Samuel Ehrhart had lived as husband and wife for 54 years and the shock of his death hastened her end. Four children survive her - Mrs. J. I. She is survived by her son, Donald Fannin of Cincinnati; a daughter, Diana Retherford and her husband Donald "Woody" of Hamilton; three grandchildren, Chan Hubbard, Dustin Retherford, and Christian Fannin; a great-granddaughter, Chantia Hubbard; one brother, Harold Cook and his wife Mary of Florida; two sisters-in-law, Ruby Cook of Florida and Carolyn Bouten of Hamilton; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Johnson; granddaughter-in-law, Barbara Hopkins; and longtime dearest friend, Delmona Grafner of Hamilton. | 1943 | Fatal One-Car Wreck Is Third In Three Days. David Hedges, 34, of 1830 McCullough Drive, died yesterday morning of head injuries suffered in an accident late Monday on Russell Cave Road near Radcliffe Road. Police said Hedges apparently lost control of his car and hit a tree about 10:30 p.m. Monday. He was alone in the car. His death was the third fatality in one-car accidents in three days. Jerry Wayne Gill, 32 died Sunday after his car hit a tree on Iron Works Pike. Ricky Barnett, 21, died of head injuries suffered Sunday when he was involved in a one-car accident on Armstrong Mill Road. Hedges, a former construction worker, was a member of the East Hickman Baptist Church. A native of Lexington, he was the son of Mrs. Sarah Sharp Hedges Haynes and the late Stanley Hedges. Other survivors include three children, Dorothy Denise, Melvin David and Gregory Alan Hedges, all of Frankfort; one brother, Stanley Hedges Jr., Lexington, and two sisters, Mrs. Marjorie Steele, Lexington, and Mrs. Walter S. | 1944 | Fatally Burned Monday Morning Mrs. Lydia Seals Died From Burns of an Oil Stove Explosion. Mrs. Lydia Seals, sister-in-law of Mrs. Eva Helms of this city, was fatally burned at her home in Purdin, Monday morning. Mrs. Seals was in the kitchen when an oil stove exploded, the flames of which ignited her clothing and hair. She was taken in an unconscious condition to the McLarney hospital in Brookfield where death occurred at 12 o’clock. Arrangements for the funeral to be held Thursday afternoon are under the direction of the Chaney Funeral Home of Milan. Burial will be made in the family lot in the Milan cemetery. Mrs. Seals is survived by a brother, Dr. Pomps Helms of Eugene, Ore., a former resident of this city. Her brothers, Wallace Helms and Ed Helms, preceded her in death. Her husband died eight years ago. Mrs. Seals, who was 70 years old, made her home with her sister-in-law, Mrs. Lula Helms in Purdin. At the time of the accident Monday, Mrs. Helms was in the garden. In 1924, Gene Felt graduated with a Business Degree from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. He represented the petroleum industry in Tulsa, OK and Indianapolis, IN until he and his wife moved to Centralia, IL in 1938 to form Universal Butane Co. which supplied LP gas to oil fields and the domestic market. In 1953, he and his family moved to St. Louis, MO. Gene Felt will be fondly remembered for his honesty, generosity, fairness and faithful practice to the Golden Rule.
