771 | Civil War Veteran, 95, Dies at LaBelle Thomas E. Hedges, 95, died yesterday at his home in Labelle after a short illness. He was born Jan. 22, 1843 in Louis county, Ky. and has lived in LaBelle for the past 27 years. He is a civil war veteran. Mr. Hedges is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Georgette Truesdell, Springhill, Ky.; three sons, U.G. Hedges, R.V. Hedges, of LaBelle, and E.F. Hedges of Tolesboro, Ky., and a granddaughter, Mrs. Wade Hampton of LaBelle. Funeral arrangements are being made by Spooner and Engelhardt funeral home and services will be held at 3 o’clock this afternoon at the LaBelle Methodist church with Rev. P.T. Tyler and Rev. W.E. Burial is to be in Memorial Park cemetery under direction of Guardian funeral home. A member of the Society of Blue Friars, the journalist of Masonry. Brain was a collector of original Masonic publications and records. Collectors term Brain’s Masonic library as “priceless.” Among the rare volumes is a ritual written in longhand by Albert Pike. Past master of lodge No.36, Brain was high priest of the Royal Arch Masons, past master of council No.18, past grad high priest of the Royal Arch Masons, Knights York Cross of Honor, Knight Commander Court of Honor, member of ritual committee of the general grand chapter of the Royal Arch Masons, Grand Chancellor or the College of Rites and member of the Royal Order of Scotland. 780 | Clarence Hunt, 88, retired carman. Mr. Clarence E. "Dude" Hunt, 88, of South Shore, Ky., died Wednesday, Feb 7, 1996, at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell, Ky. He was born Feb. 5, 1908, in Walsh, Ky., a son of the late Larry Hunt and Nellie Harr Hunt. He was retired from the Norfolk and Southern Railroad after 37 years of service as a carman. Also, he was a retired farmer and member of Transportation-Communication International Union. He is survived by his wife, Gladys Slater Hunt of South Shore, whom he married Dec.12, 1931. Also surviving him are a daughter, Mrs. Carolyn Rase of South Shore, and a grand-daughter, Miss Susan Rase of South Shore; a niece to whom he helped to rear, Mrs. Julinia Roirds of South Shore; three brothers, Mr. Morris "Bud" Hunt, Mr. Raymond Hunt and Mr. Carl Hunt, all of South Shore; and one sister, Mrs. Mabel Bosley of South Shore. Preceded in death by one brother, Richard Hunt, and three sisters, Lucille Miller, Sarah and Rebecca Hunt; and his son-in-law, Mr. Donald Rase. 788 | Claude Blaylock dies here: rites February 11 Last rites for Claude Henry Blaylock were held February 11 at 2 p.m. at Oliver Funeral Home chapel, Rev. Robert Ellis officiating. Burial was in the Bethlehem cemetery, Oliver Funeral Home in charge. Mr. Blaylock, who was 83 years old, died February 10 at Tyler Holmes Memorial Hospital. He was born in Rowan County, Ky., grew up there, and came to Muncie in 1973. Mr. Ellington served in the Air Force for 20 years including the Korean and Vietnam wars and, since coming to Muncie, had been employed by Ball State University. He was a member of American Legion Post 19, Moose Lodge 33, and Eagles Lodge 231. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he was a Machine Gunner Heavy and qualified as both a rifle marksman and carbine marksman. He served during WWII in the Pacific Theatre, was involved in the invasion of Okinawa, Ryukyus and the Southern Philippines and earned 5 bronze stars. Cleve retired as a millwright leader from Empire Detroit Steel after 30+ years of service. He was a member of United Steelworkers Union Local #169 and the Empire Church of Deliverance. Cleve could often be found engaging in his favorite pastimes of working on cars and woodworking. He especially enjoyed making windmills and bird houses. A true outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, but deer hunting was his favorite. Cleve was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps and assisted in building several roads in the Mammoth Hot Springs area of Yellowstone National Park. He is survived by four sons, Donald (Bonny) Estep of Shiloh, Larry (Mary) Estep of Shelby, Roger (Joan) Estep of Kingsport, Tennessee and Cleve (Joann) Estep, Jr. of Shiloh; grandchildren, David (Kim) Estep of Willard, Scott (Carla) Estep of Kingsport, Tennessee, Jim Estep of Shelby, Jessica Estep of Shelby, Elizabeth (Carl) Brown of Mansfield, Wayne Estep (Charity Archer) of Shelby and Emily; several great-grandchildren; sister, Vadie Phillips of Illinois; numerous nieces and nephews; his closest friend, Irene Clay; and his special waitress at Denny's, Brenda. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Mildred Butler Estep, whom he married March 7, 1946 in Maysville, Kentucky; daughters-in-law, Bernice and Laura Estep; and several sisters and brothers. Friends and family may visit from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday, April 9, 2012 at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Rd. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Mitchell Prater officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Shiloh, with military honors presented by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Squad. 795 | Clifford D. Greenwood Clifford D. Greenwood, one of the last three surviving Spanish-American War veterans in San Mateo County, died Wednesday night at Sequoia Hospital after a long illness. Mr. Greenwood was 95 years old. A native of Topeka, Kan. he served in Company D in the U.S. Army Infantry in the Philippine Islands for three years during the Spanish-American War. Mr. Greenwood, who lived at 175 Orchard Ave., Redwood City, moved here in 1950 from San Francisco. He previously lived in Wisconsin. He retired in 1950 after working as garage manager in Wisconsin and San Francisco. He was a member of the Topeka Masonic Lodge, Spanish-American War Veterans of Belmont and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, in Superior, Wisconsin. Surviving Mr. Greenwood are his wife, Catherine, and a daughter, Mrs. Leota (Billie) Weber of Michigan. Services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Redwood Chapel, 847 Woodside Road, Redwood City. 796 | Clifford Hoag died of cancer at age 69. He served as superintendent of Fairmount schools for 26 years, retiring in 1973. He often helped provide transportation for students for extracurricular activities and invited them to his home. His accomplishments at Fairmount Grade School include increase in teaching staff, establishment of a hot lunch program, the addition of vocal and instrumental music studies, expansion of the athletic program to include membership in the Little Vermilion and County conferences and membership in the elementary film library. He had been a Fairmount resident since 1947. He and wife Lucille had three children: Clint (Sharon) Hoag, Terry (Norma) Hoag and Pamela (Tim) Tighe. Both Terry and Sharon are deceased. 798 | Clinton E. Hedges Clinton Enis Hedges, well-known resident of Lewistown, died suddenly at his home there Wednesday afternoon at 1 o’clock. He was the son of the late Lewis and Mary Ramsburg Hedges and a member of the Utica Reformed Church, and a member of the Home Department Bible Class of the Church School. Surviving is a foster son, Vernon Smith, near Braddock. He was the last of his immediate family.
