The will of Peter Stille, dated July 1, 1766, proved July 1, 1767, devises certain estate to his son, John, should he "return to this Province"' and the remainder of his estate to his widow, Margaret, and daughters, Sarah, wife of Edward Yorke, and Elizabeth, wife of Isaac Course. | 7890 | JOSEPH ADDIS0N3 TURLEY was born in 1815 in Montgomery County, Kentucky, and moved with his parents from the Mt. Sterling area to Napoleon, Gallatin County, Kentucky, where he died in 1875. On 28 June 1843 in Grant County, Kentucky, he married America Hampton, the daughter of James and Jane (Jack) Hampton. She was born in July, 1825, and died in 1916. It was in the Preston Hampton home in 1804 that the Ten Mile Baptist Church was formed, "with thirteen whites and two colored in attendance. The church is adjacent to the Turley property and they were active in its development. In May, 1842, the church had one of the largest revivals in its history and among those received as members were Joseph Turley and his wife, Thomas J. Turley and his wife, James Turley, and Samuel Turley. After the death of his mother, Elizabeth, Joseph Turley purchased the family property from his brothers and sisters, and in 1866 replaced the original log cabins with a large home made of bricks which were handmade on the property. That same year a new building was erected for the Ten Mile Baptist Church with handmade bricks molded on the Turley farm. The church building was destroyed by fire in 1942 and has been replaced with a newer structure. The Turley home remained in use until damaged by a storm in 1961. Part of it was still standing in the 1970s, but is no longer in existence. The land still remains in the hands of descendants in 1978. All of Joseph Turley's family, except his daughter Emily, were buried in the family graveyard. Joseph Turley also acquired land in Grant County, Kentucky, beginning on 30 December 1851 when he purchased from Preston W. Hampton for "the consideration of one dollar his undivided interest in the tract of land known as the old brick house tract of the estate of James Hampton, deceased. On 14 May 1856 C. Holton and his wife, Mary E. Holton, formerly Hampton, sold to Joseph Turley the tract of land allotted to her out of the "Home tract" of her father, the late James Hampton. The tract contained sixteen and one-half acres and twenty poles and was located on Ten Mile Creek in Grant County, Kentucky. The purchase price was $498.75. A third transaction was between Joseph Turley and B. Swope and his wife Ellen W. Swope. Joseph Turley purchased twenty-seven acres, two rods and twenty poles by the "waters of Ten Mile" for $690.62. The date of the sale was 8 April 1857. Albert Steel and his wife, Emily, late Emily Hampton, of Jackson County, Missouri, sold to Joseph Turley for $576.00 the tract of land containing nineteen acres and twenty-two poles left to Emily in a division among the heirs of James Hampton. Finally, an indenture was made between J. J. Landram, Master Commissioner of the Gallatin Circuit Court and Joseph Turley on 18 March 1863. This was a settlement of a case from the August, 1859, term of court with Turley as plaintiff as administrator of James Hampton, deceased, and Jane Hampton, John Lucas, Theodosia Lucas, Emily Steel, Albert G. Steel, America Turley, Calvin Holton, Mary E. Holton, William L. Richards, William M. Hampton and others as defendants. Joseph Turley was the highest bidder for the portion of land set forth to James Hampton in the division of his father's estate. The tract contained twenty-two acres and the purchase price was $617.00. Joseph Turley, in his will dated 13 November 1874 and entered for probate 16 August 1875,left to his wife, America, the farm in Gallatin County and all the things she would choose to keep house and farm. After her death, one hundred acres with the house were to go to Samuel Clay Turley. The land was described as beginning at a post near Ten Mile Church...to land of Lillard heir. Samuel Clay Turley was also to have his horse. The remaining part of the tract, after America's death, was to go to Emily Steele Turley who was also to have her piano and horse. James William Turley and Joseph Addison Turley were to receive all of the land in Grant County plus two notes and $500.00 which was to be divided between them. Samuel Turley and William Turley were witnesses to the will. Court appointed appraisers, Joseph Brett, Joseph R. Lillard and Samuel Turley, valued the personal estate of Joseph Turley at $2660.35. The items set aside for America Turley's use included furniture and cooking utensils as well as milch cows, calves, heifers and steers, horses, sows and hogs, oxen, a bull, sheep, and farm equipment. These items were valued at $2110.50. In 1904 "Sister America Turley" was listed among four members still present who had been members of Ten Mile Baptist Church for fifty years or more. She later lost her sight, but remained in her home until her death in 1916.
